I thought everyone already knew this, but I guess not, cuz Rodzilla and Roccy seemed shocked when I told them...I remember hearing that a White Guy started the whole Hip Hop Culture or some shit by scratching his old vinyls...i forgot his name, but I'm almost postive I heard it more than once...I think one place I heard it was on a VH1 special "History of Hip Hop" or some shit...I bet everyone already knew this by now, but I'm just making sure because some people (*cough* E-A Ski *cough*) were saying the whites are stealing Hip Hop when they were the one's who started it...But whatever, it doesn't really make a differnce too me...PeaCe...
A WHITE HOMOSAPIEN STARTED HIP HOP!!
-
shit i didnt know, thx foe tha info homie
-
I doub it.You might be right though :D
-
Kool Herc started hip hop and he is definitly black.
-
hahaha, well i guess Afrika Bambattaa who started the culture and Grand Wizard Theodore who invented scratching and rythmn scratchin' was in cahoots huh? i guess ignorance is contagious on this board when it comes to hip-hop
-
Who cares? Black aint better if they started hip-hop. And whites aint better if they started hip-hop. So let's stop it here before it will turn into a diss-topic. Thanx for the info, but it doesnt mean a thing for real who started it. If whites acts like whites talking like whites and ABOUT whites without disrespecting blacks then it's cool, they can rap. And it's the same with blacks. I hate when eveything is an excuse to start "blacks are better" or "whites are better".
A man started hip-hop. That's enought.
-
^ Thats how I feel . but I get mad when I see a Black-guy get mad For a White person Rapping.
-
Kool Herc started hip hop and he is definitly black.

but I get mad when I see a Black-guy get mad For a White person Rapping.
If they do, they stupids. And i'm saying it strong. Cause the importance is the message of the song, not the messanger. If the rapper puts passion and love for the track, and if it's good, i dont care where he's from and which color is his skin. Music deserves respect, if it's good. Like Pac said (referring to P.Diddy): You can hate the rapper, not the rap song. Cause song is art.
-
yea.. Kool Herc is the pioneer and he definatly doesnt looks like a white...africa bombaata was also one of the pioneers
the roots of hiphop comes from africa, 2000 years back... since people couldnt read and write, it was difficult to write down their history.. so the Schaman ( the man with most knowledge) told his people their history around 1/month... and to make sure that they wouldnt forget it, he made it rhyme, while people were playing drums in the background... so he "talked in rythm" - and thats the definition of rap
-
a white guy (from the BBCs audio workshop actually) was the first one to make odd noises with turntables waaaaaay back.
doesnt mean he invented hiphop, just some aspects of DJing ;)
-
The Zulu Nation labels the 12th of November 1974 the original birthday of hiphop and it was Kool Herc (Clive Campbell) who started it (not the Zulu Nation, that was Afrika Bambaata but hiphop). He's the guy in my signature which should show he's black. He's Jamaican

I don't know about you guys but I don't think you can credit ONE person with inventing Hip Hop.
-
Hip Hop started in Tibet. There was a Monk who made poems and rhymed words together.
-
a white person, oh pleez
i made a research for school about hip hop, and who great hip hop is the slave way back when they were singin on the plantations, than one of them decide to sing on a record..... they didn't start tha djing as far as i can remember but they created hip hop
-
Black, white, brown, red, yellow, green, blue, purple, whatever. The important fact is that someone started it.
A man started hip-hop. That's enough.
What if it was a woman? ;)
-
I thought everyone already knew this, but I guess not, cuz Rodzilla and Roccy seemed shocked when I told them...I remember hearing that a White Guy started the whole Hip Hop Culture or some shit by scratching his old vinyls...i forgot his name, but I'm almost postive I heard it more than once...I think one place I heard it was on a VH1 special "History of Hip Hop" or some shit...I bet everyone already knew this by now, but I'm just making sure because some people (*cough* E-A Ski *cough*) were saying the whites are stealing Hip Hop when they were the one's who started it...But whatever, it doesn't really make a differnce too me...PeaCe...

Yo homeboy... you really need to find this dude's name.
-
lmao@ everyone is claiming diffrent names LMFAO shit. I started hip-hop . pz
-
The Story NIK was describing sounds like Kool Herc's story. He's crediting for starting the whole hip hop DJ scratching thing.
But like Overseer said, There was probably this white guy who first started making weird noises with his Turntables but that doesn't mean he started Hip Hop. He was probably just a nerdy white boy playin with his turn tables.
I mean, for real, think about it. We all know Hip Hop started somewhere in New York. In nieghborhoods where mostly black people lived... Now do you really think that a white guy would have such a big influence on those people in that neighborhood... I doubt it.
-
a white guy (from the BBCs audio workshop actually) was the first one to make odd noises with turntables waaaaaay back.

Yea, thats what I was talking about, thanks...They said some white dude started fucking around with turntables, and created scratching, which was the first aspect of the Hip Hop culture...I didn't mean too get all the black guys mad, but it's just what I heard...So what I meant was The whole Hip Hop Culture was started by a white man...But like some people said, you can't credit one person...PeAcE

the future slaves knew their hipop already when living in africa...
i earlier posted this:

Even if that were true, which it's not, then black folks still run it so big deal.
-
Who gives a fuck whether a black guy or a white guy started it?
-
Just 2 let u Know.....
Kool DJ Herc, the godfather of hip-hop, was born in Jamaica in 1955. He moved to the Bronx in 1967, at the age of twelve. With his unique playlist of R&B, soul, funk, and obscure disco, Herc quickly became the catalyst of the hip-hop way of life. The kids from the Bronx and Harlem loved his ghetto style, which gave birth to the concept of the B-Boy. The B-Boy -- or beat boy, break boy, Bronx boy -- loved the breaks of Kool Herc, and as a result soon created break dancing. These were the people of the hip-hop culture. While Pete DJ Jones was #1 for the black disco crowd in NYC, Herc and the B-Boys were the essence of the hip-hop movement, because of they lived the lifestyle. The way they danced, dressed, walked, and talked was unique, as opposed to most of the disco artists and fans of the time, who were not as in touch with the urban streets of America.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By most accounts Herc was the first DJ to buy two copies of the same record for just a 15-second break (rhythmic instrumental segment) in the middle. By mixing back and forth between the two copies he was able to double, triple, or indefinitely extend the break. In so doing, Herc effectively deconstructed and reconstructed so-called found sound, using the turntable as a musical instrument.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
... the whole chemistry of that came from Jamaica ... I was born in Jamaica and I was listening to American music in Jamaica ... My favorite artist was James Brown. That's who inspired me ... When I came over here I just put it in the American style and a perspective for them to dance to it. In Jamaica all you needed was a drum and bass. So what I did here was go right to the 'yoke'. I cut off all anticipation and played the beats. I'd find out where the break in the record was at and prolong it and people would love it. So I was giving them their own taste and beat percussion-wise ... cause my music is all about heavy bass ... --Kool Herc
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modern day rap music finds its immediate roots in the toasting and dub talk over elements of reggae music. In the early 70's, a Jamaican dj known as Kool Herc moved from Kingston to NY's West Bronx. Here, he attempted to incorporate his Jamaican style of dj which involved reciting improvised rhymes over the dub versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately, New Yorkers weren't into reggae at the time. Thus Kool Herc adapted his style by chanting over the instrumental or percussion sections of the day's popular songs. Because these breaks were relatively short, he learned to extend them indefinitely by using an audio mixer and two identical records in which he continuously replaced the desired segment.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In those early days, young party goers initially recited popular phrases and used the slang of the day. For example, it was fashionable for dj to acknowledge people who were in attendance at a party. These early raps featured someone such as Herc shouting over the instrumental break; 'Yo this is Kool Herc in the joint-ski saying my mellow-ski Marky D is in the house'. This would usually evoke a response from the crowd, who began to call out their own names and slogans.
As this phenomenon evolved, the party shouts became more elaborate as dj in an effort to be different, began to incorporate little rhymes-'Davey D is in the house/An he'll turn it out without a doubt.' It wasn't long before people began drawing upon outdated dozens and school yard rhymes. Many would add a little twist and customize these rhymes to make them suitable for the party environment. At that time rap was not yet known as 'rap' but called 'emceeing'. With regards to Kool Herc, as he progressed, he eventually turned his attention to the complexities of djaying and let two friends Coke La Rock and Clark Kent (not Dana Dane's dj) handle the microphone duties. This was rap music first emcee team. They became known as Kool Herc and the Herculoids.

www.daveyd.com
That has a great history of hip-hop section. This is about as ridiculic as when I heard of hip-hop being started in Germany...LOL
DJ Kool Herc is the founder, and father of hip-hop. Read all them articals. And it's not a race thing, although white people just assume the started, and run everything.

This is the most idiotic topic ever!!!

r u referring to me?? cuz im the only "african" here.. the others are "afro-americans"... i wont start to cuss and sink to your level, but the roots of hiphop hiphop DID start in Africa...2000 years ago... end of story...
-

-
hahaha.... listen what i stated above is the real... kool herc invented hiphop plain and simple.
-
It was me!
-
Everything is derivitive. A lotta the stuff in hiphop dates back to disco, and funk, and alot of hiphop/disco/funk traces to the beatles, and a lot of the beatles traces to motown R&B, Motown R&B traces to blues and jazz, that traces back to slave music, that traces back to folk music, that traces back to friekin' gregorian chants, which traces back to Monks, which traces back to god. MUSIC IS GOD!!! LONG LIVE JESUS CHRIST!!!!
-
NIK... I dont really see nobody gettin mad. People are just telling you that you are wrong, cuz you are.
I mean, African American people aint got much they can call their own, not even their last names or their religions. But then there's Hip Hop which was no doubt started by the African American Culture, or an Urban Culture, and I guess it just bothers some people when you try to take that away.
Now maybe you got a point. It was a white man who started making weird noises with his turn tables. But that's probably all it was.... weird noises. That's not what hip hop is... there's a whole techneic when it comes down to DJing, a rhythm, a pattern. All that white guy was doing was weird noises... most likely he was a nerdy white guy who was sitting at home messin around with his turn tables... But he didnt start hip hop at all....
So there really is no point to this thread... cuz it aint Fact.
-
All that white guy was doing was weird noises... most likely he was a nerdy white guy who was sitting at home messin around with his turn tables... But he didnt start hip hop at all....
he only had one turn table...Herc was the first person to use 2 turn tables
-
Ok heres my thoughts
You cant give one person credit for starting a whole kind of music, That is simply imposible. No one will ever know for sure because hip hop is a part of so many things. So this guy claims he invented the scratch, well for all we know people could of been scratching records 10 years before this guy did it. Kids could have been in they're bassments rapping and scratching and breakdancing way before it all got famous. If you wanna talk on who made it popular then thats a whole different story. If im not mistaken rap stands for Rhythem and Poetry. I might be wrong but ive been told thats what it stands for. But even if thats not what it stands for we all know poetry is a big part of rap, poetry is rap. The whole point of rap music is poetry over a beat. So who invented poetry? That might be the person that started hip hop. But how would we ever know who wrote the first poem. That goes back centuries. And no we will never know for sure.
Now_I_Know, your whole argument is that "VH1 said it so its right." Which is stupid because the people behind VH1 are humans just like us who can read millions of books, do hours of reasearch but can't go back in time and actully see the birth of hip hop. They cant acctully prove the day it started or how it started. Some 50 year old guy could of just came the the VH1 studios and said "Hey I invented hip hop, do a story on me" They could make up any bullshit and everyone would believe it because its on TV. I dont believe it a tiny bit. Not because the guys white but because VH1 should know better than to give one guy credit for starting a whole type of music.

Actually I meant African Americans...

oh really now?
-
Kool Herc started hip hop and he is definitly black.
NUH UH LAMB SAYS HE WAS WHITE
-
get a brain.
you heard that and it's true?
even worst the f-ing scratch mean hip hop culture? no it means a scratch not a freaking culture you dope.
a scratch would mean even he initiated that style of DJing not started a culture.
