I think Ricky Davis should easily take it this year...Earl Boykins and Ben Gordon are close, but Ricky just makes you wonder why he isn't starting every time you see him play...What do ya'll think?

I have a sneaking feeling Ben Gordon of the Bulls is going to win the Sixth Man Award. Just my Spidey Sense having been around the league awhile. And, of course, you can make a great case for him. All those fourth quarter scoring outbursts. The remarkable turnaround of the Bulls. But Ricky Davis is the NBA's best Sixth Man...and here's why.
Ricky Davis and Ben Gordon are both dynamic offensive players. Players that can create their own shots and score at the time it's most difficult to score in the NBA.
But Ricky is the leader of his team's second unit, Ben Gordon is not. Ricky has become the Celtics defensive stopper with the game on the line in the fourth quarter. Ask Allen Iverson, ask Gilbert Arenas, ask Ben Gordon's teammate Kirk Hinrich which Celtics played them the toughest.
I'd like to tell you these awards are subjective, that the entirety of the participating voters are completely in tune with the reality of the league, and above the perception. But I've seen too many commentators, too many national "experts" on the NBA the last few months (see "Chorus" above), talk about the "troubled" Ricky. You know, the caricature created by isolated incidents in his first few years. The kind we've seen in Boston a grand total of, let's do the math...zero times. But they still talk about the past, the perception of what was as opposed to the reality of what is. These are the same people that just assumed Britney Spears was going to be shacked up and pregnant by 23.
OK, bad example.
The point, is don't be surprised if and when the C's get passed over for their first major award since Larry's MVP in 1986.
And don't be surprised in a couple of weeks when Ricky's still playing and Ben Gordon is on vacation.
