Title: The Nintendo "Revolution"
Post by: Dominator on May 17, 2005, 07:28:10 AM
Finally, we have it for you. The very first official picture of Nintendo's next-generation console, codenamed Revolution. Behold!

http://gaf.hiddengalaxy.net/console/revolution/revolution.jpg

Yes, that is the largest picture we have for now, but it's better than nothing, right? The floating DVD is obviously meant to show that their system is in fact about the size of three DVD cases, as announced earlier. Along with this picture, we also have new details on the console and its online network.

Nintendo is billing the Revolution as about two to three times more powerful than the GameCube, which may seem like a bit less than the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but Perrin Kaplan wisely notes "It's not all about having 'turbo power,' it's about what you do with it." Nintendo Revolution games will use the standard DVD format and will be fully backward compatible with GameCube games. The Revolution will also play normal movie DVDs. Nintendo will offer a FREE online matchmaking system. Also, using their online service, Revolution owners will be able to download (likely for a fee, but that has not been announced) many Nintendo games, both new and classic.

Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference takes place later this morning, and you can bet GamesAreFun will be sure to give all the details as soon as we get them.

# Release is sometime in 2006.
# Prototype shown is larger than final unit.
# Nintendo is still determining final colors for the console.
# All-Access Gaming, which refers to backwards compatibility to 20 years of Nintendo games, NES, SNES, N64. We don’t know particulars of how it’ll be accessed or what, if any, the cost structure might be.
# Downloadable to 512MB of flash memory.
# SD memory card slot.
# Wireless controllers.
# Two USB 2.0 ports.
# Built-in WiFi.
# WiFi used to interface with the DS.
# DS likely to enhance future games.
# Self-loading optical drive that will play 12cm Revolution discs and smaller GameCube discs
# Self-contained attachment for playing media content, including DVDs.
# No controller was shown. So even though the box looks a lot like the one leaked over the weekend, the accompanying controllers were not presented. So was it a leak, or a really good guess?

LOS ANGELES, May 17, 2005 – Each generation of video game consoles builds on the past to set new standards for the future. As the company with the strongest heritage of innovation, Nintendo redefines expectations for all next-gen systems by employing a wide-ranging strategy to attract more kinds of gamers to more kinds of games. When Nintendo’s new console, code-named Revolution, arrives in 2006, everyone will discover the meaning of All-Access Gaming.

“We will show the world what a next-gen system can be. Revolution marries the strongest heritage of innovation to the future of gaming,” says Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. “With backward compatibility and the ‘virtual console’ concept, the stylish, compact body provides maximum gaming power. It will not only take home entertainment into another dimension by expanding the definition of video games, but it also will give you access to the great history of gaming.”

Some of the system features that wowed the crowd at the Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles include:

· The cool look: The new console boasts high-quality materials and a smart, compact design, approximately the size of three standard DVD cases stacked together. A variety of prototype colors are being showcased during E3. It will come with a silver stand that makes the system a welcome, artistic component of any multimedia setup, whether it’s displayed vertically or horizontally.

· Backward compatibility: The new console plays all games from the current Nintendo GameCube™ generation. But there’s more…

· The secret weapon: The console also will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo® 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System® (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System® (NES).

· Easy expansion: A bay for an SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory.

· Two disc formats, one slot: Instead of a tray, a single, innovative, self-loading media bay will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. Owners will have the option of equipping a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content.

· The specs: The system boasts 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, wireless controllers, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi access. A worldwide network of Nintendo players can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment. Revolution’s technological heart, a processing chip developed with IBM and code-named “Broadway,” and a graphics chip set from ATI code-named “Hollywood,” will deliver game experiences not previously possible.

· The stars: Introduction of a number of new franchise properties will add to the world’s richest stable of stars, including Mario, Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong and Metroid.

· Wireless freedom: A number of Wi-Fi-enabled launch titles are in development that will employ Nintendo’s newly announced wireless gaming service, Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection. A worldwide network of Nintendo players can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment.

· Freedom of design: A dynamic development architecture equally accommodates both big-budget, high-profile game “masterpieces” as well as indie games conceived by individual developers equipped with only a big idea.

“Our next console proves small in size but big on ideas,” says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “We’re throwing open the doors of gaming to wider audiences, from casual players to hard-core gamers who live for the thrill of defeating an endless army of wireless opponents.”

Nintendo’s All-Access Gaming philosophy covers the spectrum. The next console fits anywhere. It brings together new games and old. It gives people worldwide access through wireless Wi-Fi connections. And it opens the world of video games – to everyone. Software for the new console will even attract people who don’t consider themselves players. Adults, kids, men and women around the world will have access to the most popular video game characters, the best game franchises and the most engaging experiences yet developed – only with Nintendo.

The controller isn't the revolutionary thing.  There's something else they haven't leaked, they kept alluding to it, but wouldn't come right out and say what it was.  The controller IS supposed to be much different than in the past, but the president of Nintendo hinted that Nintendo had revolutionized the industry 4 times (as he saw it).

1. The original NES was revolutionary, unlike anything before.

2. The Nintendo Gameboy was revolutionary, unlike anything before.

3. Donkey Kong Country for the SNES was revolutionary, unlike anything before.

4. Super Mario 64 was revolutionary, unlike anything before.

Then he showed a graphic showing that every game system until now had had 3 components; a controller, a system, a t.v., and in recent years, a fourth element, the internet.

So he said something about Nintendo was going to revolutionize how those 4 aspects interact with each other, and they said that Nintendo didn't want to make games for Hardcore gamers, OR casual gamers, OR kids, OR older people, they wanted to make new games, for Hardcore gamers, AND casual gamers, AND kids, AND older people.

They keep claiming they've figured out a way to have all those people play the same game and be satisfied with it.

Also, one of the most understated concepts they talked about, was that they have truly reached out to developers, and are determined to make the revolution the easiest to design for system, ever.  They mentioned some 'revolutionary' technology to make young designers without a big budget feel at home designing for the revolution... so I don't know what that means, if they'll have a template system, or if Nintendo will finance some games, or what they're talking about.

i think it looks the best out of the 3, Xbox 360 looks like some cheap plastic, the PS3 looks like a printer this one looks like a little disc drive

anyways i'll be looking forward to the Metroid Primes, Zeldas and the occasional surprise hit from nintendo

Nintendo went downhill at the end of the N64 and the whole Gamecube era. They are going to have to do something crazy to actually get people to buy their system to the point were it is profitable.

But I do like the whole backward compatible and downloadable feature.

The Gamecube has been extremely profitable.  Every system they've released since the end of the N64 has been extremely profitable

, the Gameboy Advance, the Gameboy Advance SP, the Gamecube, and the Nintendo DS have all made them mad cash.
