Title: Question on difference between rap and hip hop
Post by: authentic on May 17, 2005, 09:00:27 PM
ive always viewed it as hip hop is the club type versions of rap, with a quicker feel to it. ANd i see rap as poetry rapped with a dark beat. but now i see rap and hip hop used interchangeably, is the way i see rap and hip hop wrong? Are hip hop and rap the same thing? Ive been confused on this for while.

So actually, hiphop isn't a genre of music? I always classified artists like Gang Starr and Dilated Peoples as "hiphop" and morons like Nelly and Eminem "rap", for some reason. That's probably because they rap without really being part of hiphop, imo.

their meanings/understanding have changed over time because critics use the words loosely to describe music that they cant categorize into one definite group...

people are so apodictic

THERE IS NOT ONE CLEAR, TRUE DEFINITION PROVING ALL THE OTHERS WRONG
(and i don´t care what KRS-ONE might have had coming out of that mouth of his)

MOST people tend to give the definition that rap is the music, and hiphop is the culture; but then rapping is actually defined by people doing the type of rythmically laying down there voice over a beat in the way peculiar to such artists....so is RJD2 hiphop music, although hiphop is supposed to be the culture/lifestyle/philosophy/attitude....? it´s not really rap however. and some people would call it trip-hop....

another common definition is the 4 elements thing, DJíng, breakdancing, graffiti, rapping. That´s yet another problematic simplification; some people have actually and very seriously defined hiphop as consisting out of 72 elements. what about the ´way of life´ that is hiphop, allegedly, is that supposed to consist out of rapping, using turntables, bombing trains and dancing? what about hiphop clothing? etc...

bottom line, i think it´s idiotic to try and find a ´concise´ definition of what hiphop is. there is no concise way of defning it. anything´s quite inadequate IMO

I just call east coast music hip hop cause people get all offended if I call it rap.

And from my understanding, rap means rhythm and poetry. I think people just pretend they have shit figured out. I don't care. I listen to it cause I like it. Fuck a name for it if you can jam.

I never bought what KRS said. I'm not into the Rap=Hip Hop thang.

To all those who think like that, could you elaborate and share some thoughts?

I'd see it like this. To me rappers who partake in seriously, or show due respect to the other "elements" of hiphop, are to me considered to be hiphop artists. Those who don't I would consider rap artists, because they rap but aren't involved in hiphop in any other sense.

the hip hop is the culture right, but the hip hop is also a kind of music. The rap is a part of hip hop but it's not always hip hop.

The rap music that is related to hip hop culture is hip hop. Hip hop is not commercial. Few hip hop artists : gangstarr, krs one, de la soul, a tribe called quest, pete rock & cl smooth. They are all making hip hop music and rap music as well.

but some artist are just making rap like eminem, 50 cent, even wu tang to me is more rap than hip hop, but they more hip hop than snoop dogg.

Most of the hip hop is from the east, but there are few artist in the west like dilated peoples and jurassic 5.

that's my definition of hip hop, that's what the culture is to me, if u think the culture is different maybe your definition is different too
