Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira scored the winning penalty as the Gunners became the first club to win the FA Cup on a shoot-out.
Manchester United were made to pay for not finishing off Arsenal during 120 minutes of intense goalless action.
Rio Ferdinand had a goal disallowed, while Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy were denied by the woodwork.
Arsenal had few chances but Paul Scholes missed from the spot to allow Vieira to secure the trophy.
