Title: Are you a beat or lyrics type?
Post by: Jome on July 19, 2002, 03:29:36 PM
You know how it goes.
I really can't decide on either.
I dont wanna listen to Nellys gay lyrics, even if the beat is tight.
On the other side, I dont wanna listen to Ras Kass's dope lyrics if he's on a boring as hell beat.
Even if the lyrics is some hi-tech shit, you will get bored after a couple of times.

The ultimate would be advanced lyrics on a multi-layered beat, so that neither the beat nor the lyrics will become boring.

I'm into 'em both a lot, but overall I prefer tha beat over tha lyrics. If this was back in '96 maybe I'd have a different opinion.

All about the lyrics for me.
I would rather excellent lyrics on a simple drum beat than average lyrics on a really dope beat.

yup lyrics for me too. The beat doesnt get the message across in the tune, the lyrics do.

i honestly look for the beat first.......cuzz if the track aint making my head go up and down.........i start to dislike it......but sometimes the lyrics can just take over and make seem like if theres no beat needed.

it may all depend too......cuzz like for me at home i rather listen to lyrics

well im out on the streetz i need a tight beat wit some bomb bass to make headz turn..............also at the clubs u need songs wit some tight beats! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So would you rather have Ras Kass or Common rapping dope lyrics over a beat where Snoop is farting, smoking and saying ooh-wee, than hear e.g. Mack 10, Shade Sheist or some other average rapper on a BOMB Dre-beat?

Beats. I can't listen to a song if the beat is wack.

70% beats, 30% lyrics

The beat is important, then its the flow... then the hook, then the lyrics but they all got to make me react

WTF? That doesnt make any sense what u said about snoop farting and shit. I didn't know  snoop started making beats for people, where he farts and says ohh wee.

All i said is i'd rather hear someone spiting great lyrics over a basic beat. Than hear an average rapper rapping over a mad dre beat. Simple as that, thats how i like my hip hop.

Id rather have a great beat with shitty lyrics then a shitty beat with great lyrics.

NO DOUBT....
you must only listen to main stream shit whos gone pop.
Snoop is a good example, he used to be the shit, though.
Other good examples are Jay-z, Nas n shit like that... they all quit beein real. Dres beat is still cool but cant compare to the beats like premo(Im not sayin premos a better PRODUCER than Dre, Im talkin bout the beats. IMO premos a DJ n Dre is a producer. dont get confused)... Plus, just to show my respect to Dre, i think his beat WAS better than premo's, but not anymore, sadly..

neway, thats just my oppinion u can ignore it if you dont like it coz i know this is a westcoast hiphop forum n not a hiphop forum.

1. BEAT
2. Flow/Delivery

lyrics dont matter to me as long as they're decent

Thaz kinda hard to decide, it depends on your mood too....but, usualy ,the beat gets me interested and the lyrics make me stay like dat.  Like if i hear a song with a dope beat, at first i'll be really into it, hearing it again n again, but if the lyrics r wack, i would get tired of it, whereas a lyrical song would always get me thinking and get deeper in the song, plus, anyone can talk shit over a beat, I mean, theres a lot more creativity and effort involved in working on the lyrics and rapping it nice, thats the essence of rap IMO.......so its close, but Id pick lyrics over beat slightly, like sccits estimate percentage..

ill go with the beats, theres more to music than lyrics imo
Title: Re: Are you a beat or lyrics type?

both !

but i'll go with the beat cause as soon as the beat is good, a good rapper will sound good on it, but for the lyrics, the beat can be good but the lyrics can fuck the song up.

I like to mess around and produce sick beats and shit, so for me I'm always listen'n to the beat, and the samples and shit like that.  But I can sorta seperate the two, I'll be like, "Yea this beat is sick, but the song is kinda dumb" and I'll listen to it anyway.  But you know when you're flip'n through tracks on your new CD you're always look'n for a dope beat to stop on and listen to.  Only later do you actually get to hear the lyrics when you listen to the entire CD front to back for the first time.  I also like listen'n to instrumentals a lot, so I pretty much like dope beats.  But I'm not gunna keep listen'n to a song with a dope beat if the lyrics suck, or if the lyrics don't flow. That's a real important part really, is how the lyrics flow to the beat.  Eminem does a good job of modifying his flow the beat, but then there's some who fail to change their flow to the beat and I can't listen to the song that much.

Kurupt - On, Onsite...SICKEST FUCK'N BEAT! It's so fuck'n gangster!! I'll listen to this song til I just get so sick of it :)  Space Boogie is straight gangster too...

I think it's kinda like findin' a female you wanna settle down with.  Her looks attract you first, then you learn her personality.      Same with a song...The beat gets my attention first, then I listen to the lyrics.  The lyrics then is what keeps the song interesting so it has replay value.

To me its lyrics over the beat by a little...Cuz if you have like The big Tymers rap over a Dre beat it ruins the whole song...Like if a dope ass Alchemist beat gets ruined by nelly or something

That's kinda tough 2 answer! A bomb-ass beat always catches my attention first! But if the lyrics suck then I start 2 dislike it again!
