Man Utd sign keeper Van der Sar

Manchester United have signed Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.
The 34-year-old has agreed a two-year deal and will join the club on 1 July, providing he passes a medical.

United have been looking for a new goalkeeper after releasing Roy Carroll at the end of May.

Van der Sar, who has 95 international caps, moved to Fulham from Juventus for £5m in August 2001 and went on to make 153 appearances for the Cottagers.

He was linked with a move to United in January but agreed a contract extension with Fulham until summer 2006 instead.

The Dutchman is United's first new signing since the club's takeover by Malcolm Glazer and he is likely to join the squad for July's tour of the Far East.

He will become the latest in a long line of keepers to have been tried by manager Sir Alex Ferguson since the loss of Peter Schmeichel in 1999.

Mark Bosnich, Massimo Taibi, Raimond van der Gouw, Fabien Barthez and Carroll have all come and gone while Ricardo's contract expires this summer.

United's other keeper, American Tim Howard, agreed a new contract until 2009 in May.

Better than Howard and Carroll.

Van Der Sar is a very good keeper. 34 isn't old for a keeper, Man Utd will get at least 2 seasons out of him.

Edwin van der Sar has revealed that the offer of joining Manchester United was too good to turn down.

The Dutch international has revealed that he'd thought about the prospect of joining United, but insists he had remained committed to Fulham.

’’Of course you’re happy if you get a chance to join United,’’ he said.

’’You don’t have to think about that for a very long time. I think first contact was about eight-nine days ago and yesterday we sort of concluded it.

’’Maybe in the back of my head I had the idea of that possibility but I was fully committed to Fulham until the end and I think that showed.

’’The manager Cookie (Chris Coleman) called me, he was happy with me and wished me all the best.

’’Of course the next two years will be great for me. I hope to bring United back to where they belong and that is in the top position.

’’I signed a two-year deal, had a few talks with the manager, he explained my role and what he wants from me, so it’s clear for me what I need to do and I will perform the best I can.’’

stfu, everyone that knows something about soccer knows he's the best, if not he's at least in the top 3

and why do you think he's the number one pick in the dutch national team for almost 8 years now? the netherlands has always had great goalies ;)

Waterreus is very good as well, but not as good as Van der Sar ;)

P.S. Italy and The Netherlands are the only 2 countries that have never had a bad keeper in the national team.

Taibi? ROFL! He played more for Serie B teams than Serie A ones. For real, how the fuck is it possible for UTD to sign Taibi??

Cech and Cudicini are both better then van der Sar, but he's easily in the Top 5 Premiership keepers.

Van der sar is a solid experienced keeper who wont make any stupid mistakes due to lack of concentration like Caroll and Howard did.

Think of Germany ;) Van der Sar is great, not the best, but Top 10 worldwide.

All of you putting VdS in a top100 have never seen Italian Serie A and Juventus FC in particular, cause VdS will always be remembered as the most embarassing GK in Serie A history. I know he used to be good, in Amsterdam. But for real he totally fucked up his legacy here in Turin. He played too horrible to put him in a top-whatever! I'm still disgusted!

in the national team, in amsterdam and in london he has always played great. apparantly italy was not his thing at all, but that doesn't mean he's not "in a top-whatever" ;)

Van Der Sar is still a good & has been for about the past 10 years, IMO he is still in the 10 GK's in the world

Just because he never had a great time at Juve doesn't make him a poor keeper, quite a few players have had a poor time in Serie A like Bergkamp & Henry but done well elsewhere

Waterhaus ain't a bad keeper, infact at the moment he's one of the best in the SPL  ;) and he's got a winners medal for this season :P
