Title: Kokane's "Funk Upon a Rhyme" review
Post by: That_Cracka_J on July 15, 2002, 02:17:26 PM
I was going through some old Source magazines from back in the day and I came across an album review of "Funk Upon a Rhyme" by Kokane, so I figured I'd type it up.

Niggas just don't know when to let a good thing rest.  Ever since Dre and Death Row freaked the funk last year, everybody and their great-aunt have jumped aboard the G-Funk bandwagon.  And now you can officially add Kokane to the list.
But Kokane believes that he is different from the rest and has something new to offer.  According to him, he doesn't do rap; instead he does straight-up funk.  Which is true, he barely kicks a verse on the entire album, perfering to sing his vocals much in the narrative style of his hero George Clinton.  As for the music?  He boasts of not having one sample; all of his music is done live.
In the end the album is aw-ight; nothing about it will change your life.  I don't know, maybe it's just me, but if I hear one more damned Casio keyboard-sounding bassline and a high-pitched whining noise, I just might start screaming.  Don't get me wrong, I dig the funk as much as the next man, but gee-whiz, must all rap albums sound the same?  As if every producer on the West Coast is a clone of Dr. Dre?  How about a little originality, guys?  The overall package is decent, but at times the music sounds as if your favorite Parliament CD is skipping on every sixth measure of melody.
Lyric-wise, Kokane is about average, but it's hard to tell with all the Funkadelic-singing that dominates the album.  In the end Kokane is indeed correct in stating that his album is more funk than hip-hop.  But as for me?  I'll make like that girl Slim Kid Tre from The Pharcyde and pass it by.  And if you're sick and tired of the funk, you might want to do the same.

...3 Mics...

---------Man, Fuck The Source.
