- developers get a 'developer intel-mac' in 2 weeks
- every version of mac osx for the past 5 years has been built on intel & ppc (in secret)
- new apple mac's (built on intel) will be able to run windows & mac osx, but mac osx will only run on apple hardware
- most software is platform independant
- they want to have this complete by 2007

going to x86 introduces a whole new ballgame though, being that x86 is vulnerable to things like stack overflows, where as ppc isnt etc.. will be an interesting 2 years

e.g. linux runs on x86 but doesnt have the overflow problems.

since mac os is now already built upon a unix base it wont be too hard to port across at all.

this is gonna mean possibly that more mac graphics cards etc are gonna be hardware compatible with PC's (provided drivers are made).

this should drive costs down for us end users for some things like that

AMD would be in for a piece of the action too..

some PC gfx card manufacturers had already made a few inroads to mac land so this is good for everyone all round

their may be some "format wars" over media and the like.. but overall it'll be coo for consumers

tucking tails?

It's the processor we are talking about... not the OS. If Apple came out and said they were abandoning the OS, then I'd be tucking my tail. Apple is about software and design... they've never handled their own chips (maybe way back in the day, but definitely not for the last 15 years or so).
