There's no question. Let's stay on topic. Phil signed to L.A.! I'm happy about that, i'mma celebrate that, and that's a great day for every Laker fan. Next year? Shit, God knows.

this is good for LA, but only if they still make some big moves. This current team still goes nowhere. Even Phil said it would be "amazing" if they could contend for a championship by his 3rd year of the contract.

it will be interesting to see them on the court again with one another.  But i honestly don't see the Lakers winning a championship with that roster.  Just too many good teams out in the west.  The Spurs alone will stop the Lakers from reaching the finals.  They need 2 good role players along with a decent center to be considered championship material IMO.

Lionel The Laker wrote:
Ok here we go.......... Around the end of December it became clear that Rudy T was suffering severe burnout. Feelers were put out to the agent of Phillip (Tod Musberger) around this time. Phillip was very bored and had decided around middle of Dec. that he wanted to coach in the NBA again. He and Jeanie discussed this. When Rudy T quit things really started to heat up between the Lakers and Phillip. He thought about taking over the Lakers soon after Rudy quit but decided against it out of loyalty to Hamblen. Despite what Phil says publicly he feels this Lakers team has a chance to be the New Bulls 91-93 version. They have a blueprint all planned and ready to go and have roster moves already in mind. Now back to the story..... Phillp calls Kobe to see where his mind is. Kobe tells him that the media is killing him and "People run there mouth too much" This is when Rick Bucher said that Phillip and Kobe would meet. Kobe relayed the message to Phillip and was like "see how is this stuff getting out who is talking?" From that point on the Lakers completely shut off the media. Anybody caught leaking stuff would be punished. The deal has been done since late April. Both sides agreed officially on a contract and both sides were happy. Phillip and Mitchell meet and agree to what Kind of team they wanna build around Kobe with Long athletes who can defend. Everything is smooth sailing and the Lakers brass meet after Phillip and Kobe talk again. They discuss the soap opera aspect and people runnin there mouths causing static in the media ect. Neither Kobe, Phillip or anybody in the Laker org. want that stuff to happen again. This is where it gets funny. Emplay, daocho, Peter V. were right when they said a source from SFX was saying Phillip won't be coach and Kobe is trying to stop it. I would have fell for it also if the source I had wasn't actually in the room when Phillip and Buss agreed to a deal. This story was falsely planted to catch a mole or find out who has a Big Mouth. It worked. You know how you tell one person a rumor and by the time it gets around its a whole different story? Thats what happened. Now there you have it.

He didn't say it would be "amazing", he said they would take it one step at a time...Same thing he said right before winning the 3 titles in LA when he first arrived...

the interview they showed at halftime of game 3, they asked him if he felt the current team could win a title. And he did say..."its a 3 year contract, and it would be amazing if we could win one by the 3rd year. Winning a championship isnt the reason i came back" Take it how u want, but that is what he said.

Point is, that's just the way Phil is...He said the same typa' shit back in '99 before he brought LA the 3 titles...Jerry Buss is aimin' high, trust me...

u know yourself NIK, you dont want to see this CURRENT team lace em up next year. U know u want to see some major improvements rosterwise. Other then Kobe, Odom and Butler...who else is there? Theres no bench, no point, Bryan Grant is the biggest waste of money in the league...they need help man. Especially in the West. Shit, i hate the Lakers....but they are used to having a winning organization in LA. And just squeeking into the playoffs wont be good enough for more then a year or two. They are gonna want to compete for a championship, and i dont see this team being a bonified contender in the west for years. UNLESS, they make some MAJOR improvements.

I'm not saying that they couldn't use help, but that help is coming...Jerry Buss has some plans and is tryna' pull a quickie here, obviously if he's only hired Phil for 3 years...Trust in the Lakers, because if history is any indication, it's only the logical thing to do...Just wait... 8)

i dont know this, but is the 3 yr contract Buss's decision...or Phils? If everyone in LA, including Buss seems to think Phil is the savior...id imagine he'd want him for 10 yrs if he could have him.

Well, they got him for 3 years, so they got 3 years to come up with some shit, and we all know LA is a strong and powerful enough organization to do that shit...PeACe
