June 15 (Bloomberg) -- A tsunami warning was issued for the western coasts of the U.S., Canada and Mexico after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of California, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in an e-mail alert.

``A tsunami warning is in effect for the coast areas from the Californian-Mexico border to the north tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia inclusive,'' the alert said. ``It is not known -- repeat not known -- if a tsunami exists but a tsunami may have been generated.''

People in low lying coast areas should follow instructions from local emergency officials and anyone on beaches should move to higher ground. The tsunami threat will exist for several hours, according to the e-mail alert, which was received by Bloomberg News at about 8 p.m. California time.

The earthquake was located 300 miles (483 kilometers) northwest of San Francisco and struck at 7:51 p.m. local time, the center said.

They canceled the warning for San Diego a couple of minutes ago :) First Chile, now off Cali :o Canada/Alaska you up next.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0251Z 15 JUN 2005
COORDINATES - 41.3 NORTH 125.7 WEST
LOCATION - OFF COAST OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
MAGNITUDE - 7.4

EVALUATION

NO DESTRUCTIVE PACIFIC-WIDE TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS BASED ON
HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.

HOWEVER - EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL
TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN
A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES
IN THE REGION OF THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS
POSSIBILITY AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.

THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE BULLETINS
FOR ALASKA - BRITISH COLUMBIA - WASHINGTON - OREGON - CALIFORNIA.
