Title: What's worst....name dropping, line recycling, or line borrowing?
Post by: R-Tistic on June 19, 2005, 12:53:28 AM
In your opinion, which of these three are the worst? Do you not have a problem with any of them, or all of them? Who would you say is the biggest for each of these?

Name dropping - Game
Line Recycling - Daz
Borrowing - Jay-Z

i really donīt have a problem with any of it but it it feels weird hearin Jay flippin an old Slick Rick verse or a Big verse and tryin to pass it of as something he wrote. and it can be a problem coz there are prolly a whole lot of people that have never heard the original songs and then itīs a problem.

True..well the thing is, Jay doesn't try to pass it off as his, he said somethin about when he use a big line, he's just "biggin up his brother" or some shit like that. But it is definitely a problem when a whoooole lotta people, especially younger ones, hear his songs and think he was a genius for some of his lines, then they hear an old song and they are like "dammn, that's where Jay got it from, I thought he made that." Especially with "99 problems", he stole that hook straight from KRS (I think it was him) and people were sayin it was the hottest hook of the year.

Line recyclin and line borrowing by far for me. The name droppin isnt so bad, but it will start gettin annoying after a while.  Line recycling CAN be coo, if u do it only rarely and on specific lines that are for a good reason. Daz recycles EVERY and ANYthing he's ever done lol. If youre someone who has made some classics in your career, and you throw a line that is one that everyone remembers u by in a newer song....i like dat shit. Its kind of a throwback for some folks....like "ahh yeah that was mah jam" typa shit lol. But Daz overdoes it so much that he just seems to rappin tha same shit over different beats. Line borrowin is kinda the same for me. If you borrow a line, here or there it isnt so bad. I done the shit before too, shit. But as long as u make it in a way where its OBVIOUS whos line it is....and dont play tha shit off like youre writing it, then u aiight.

I remember Ras Kass saying "Spit rhymes so nasty it'll make Lil' Kim blush" twice on Rasassination - that sucked. I guess line recycling is the worst out of these 3 cases imo. Line borrowing isn't that bad at all, as long as it's done properly and not overdone. Name dropping can be nice, but Game does it just too much.

and if you borrow you just suck.  jay z and foxy brown and lil kim borrow so much fuckin lines its ridiculous.  you aint biggin up your brother, your swingin from his nuts.  if you cant write to a beat, dont use someone elses shit, carefully set the mic down and walk away.

All three cases are annoying as hell sometimes. Normally, I'd go with recycling rhymes but borrowing is far worse, imo. Unless credit is given where it's due, it's disrespectful to spit something that someone else came up with and pass it off as your own shit.

Line recycling is the worst. Like the whole Bobby & Whitney line is more played out then Madden 98. Every fucking rapper has used that line, switched the words around. It's ridiculous.

lol, I'm talking about two different SONGS there.

Ras Kass - Rasassination <= for sure
Xzibit ft. Ras Kass - Game face
& some other track off Rasassination, he also repeats that same line. Not sure which song it is tho, probably something like "H2O Proof" or somewhere near that track on the album (around track 9).
