Larry Brown will not return to coach the Pistons next season, according to a broadcast report.
The report, which quoted sources close to the situation, said the team and Brown have moved closer to a buyout of Brown's contract, which has three years left and an estimated $18 million.
There was no indication whether there would be any stipulations in the buyout that would prohibit Brown from coaching somewhere else next season.
Brown had said as recently as Friday that it was his desire to coach the Pistons next season. But, according to the report, Brown was unable to convince the team that he would be healthy enough to get through the entire season.
While it was still unknown when the buyout would be completed, the Knicks are likely watching the situation closely, as the team's president, Isiah Thomas, has been waiting to see what happens in Detroit before naming a new coach.
Former Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders is the favorite to replace Brown in Detroit, according to the report.
