So, I have finally gotten tired of all the kiddies on this board speculating on why the 213 album did a poorly as it did. Wanna know who id to blame? Blame 213. Blame Snoop and Nate. First, let talk about the whole thing, Snoop is to blame for half of the songs being old as they were all featured on his Welcome To Tha Chuurch mix cd's, some under different names. Secondly, lets blame Snoop for going out of his way to not promote it. On the release date of "The Hard Way", Snoop personally delivered his solo single from "R&G" to Power 106 in LA... (Drop It Like It's Hot). Snoop was contractually prohibited by Geffen/Star Trek to promote anything else other that "R&G" for 2 months prior to it's release. The 213 record came out approximately 3 months prior to "R&G". Snoops management, The Firm, were not willing to allow Snoop to do what it would take to promote a successful record.
Nate Dogg, claimed that Dolla Dolla Bill was a track that was made for his album and would not allow it to be on "The Hard Way". Nate's management would not schedule him for any promotional apprearances unless he was getting paid. Selling records was not enough for them.
Warren was actually the only one that would go out of his way to promote the record. He did the radio appearances, he did the in-stores, etc...
There you have it....
-
OK, warren was the only one who "promoted" it because he was the only one that didn't do his part: HE DIDN'T PRODUCE THE DAMN RECORD LIKE EVERYONE THOUGHT HE WOULD.
but aside from that, who gives a shit about 213 sales...snoop even said he wasn't expectin anyone to buy it, he did it for himself and the group and the fans that were waiting for the album to come out for ages. this album was not for the masses. this album was for the people that actually got a kick out of listening to the old school 213 demo tapes we have all downloaded. and, just because it didn't sell well doesn't mean it wasn't a good album. and, an album doing "poorly" to the masses can be a good thing. imagine if it sold 10 bazillion copies, ya'll same people would be bitching that they 'sold out' again when you heard a bunch of 10 year old girls singin 'dolla dolla bill'.
it's just music, who cares about sales...

Why say blame Snoop and Nate when you _then_ go on to say it was their management and prior deals holding them back? that aint their fault.. thats on TVT and whoever elsewhere tied their hands..
Why didn't TVT also make sure they had them contracted to do promotion like these other people did? are they stupid? delay the album if need be hell.. ?
What kind of bullshit ass label puts out an album from someone who 1) won't/can't promote it.. and 2) doesn't tie them into HAVING to promote it?

Exactly. Blame TVT. They were stupid enough to think that they could rely purely on Snoop, Nate, and Warren's 'star power' to sell the record. There's just one problem - you can't sell a record if a good amount of those people who would likely buy it don't even know it exists.
The artists demanding payment to promote THEIR record wouldn't have helped matters though...

where has that come from? there is no evidence of that.
-
^ That seemed to be the case with the initial comment in this thread regarding Nate Dogg. Granted, it might not be true and it COULD be the management's decision if it is. However, supposing that it is true it would be stupid to place all the blame on management alone, especially without any proof.
That could just be hearsay. Although suggesting that there is ''no evidence of that'' well, the same could be said about your TVT comments and how they didn't have them contractually obliged to promote the record. For all we know, they did as 213 were doing TV performances, magazine spots, etc., but perhaps the reason that promo was relatively lackluster was because, well, they probably felt they didn't need to promote heavily and that the record would sell itself - as I was trying to say in my post.
I recall one interview with the president of TVT and they asked him why he signed 213 and his answer was that he did so because of Snoop Dogg. Not because he felt the trio could produce a quality album, or that he believed in the artists, because of Snoop. Furthermore, Tha Eastsidaz albums (also released on TVT) at least got two videos off their releases, well the first one certainly did and I think ''Duces & Trays'' did too. Certainly seems to me like TVT saw a cash-cow in ''The Hard Way'', and such arguments would suggest that they thought they could rely on the 'star power' of the group to move units.

Fuck TVT dogg ur rite...They refused to release an album by Ja Rule's group called Cash Murda Click that was supposed to come out in 1999. Ja could tear anyone's head off on the mic even to this day so it wasnt a talent issue. Turns out that the dumb jew CEO who runs TVT had bad blood with Lyor Cohen or sumthin and didnt feel like sharing royalties...Fuck TVT...It's Murdaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...........

On a video interview with dubcnn Warren said snoop and nate didnt want him to produce on the album they wanted to go in a different direction. IMO Snoop Leaked the whole album (Daddy V As well) On the welcome to the house mixtapes All the good songs any way so the rest of the album was garbage it didnt matter that it diddnt sell they were happy they made history 2gether by doing it
-
basically there is alot of reasons why 213 didnt sell much units...but one of the main reasons was that they had to stop any promotions because R&G was coming a few months later so that had to start some promotions for that...by the way dont blame Snoop for that because it seems like this R&G album wasnt even his idea It was just a deal to go Platinum + . Thats the main reason for me ..Its all Business, and In my opinion they knew that "The Hard Way' wouldnt be a big project other wise it would have been On Geffen and Get the right promotion.
-
with the right singles and promotion the 213 album could've went multi-platinum, it shoud've had 3 or 4 videos like "dolla dolla bill" "mlk" and "gotta find away" or whatever, it would've been dope, epace.,

-
i coulda sworn it's cuz the album sucked
i agree
with all the hype and build up and the anticipation that surrounded this release, i was left disappointed. screw the sales, im talking about the albums quality
firstly, to not have any warren g produced tracks was a big let down. how can u have a real 213 album when u have all outside producers making the beats..................................which werent any good to begin with.
i was hoping for some smooth classic longbeach g-funk but what were us loyal fans left with? a couple of decent tracks and a whole bunch of lame ones.
warren wouldve provided the group with the perfect soundtrack to lace. i guess i shouldve seen it coming with the corny ass cover!
-
the album was allright..it could have went gold or platinum with more singles and more promo

You're a fucking clown homeboy. TVT did try to release the CMC record. Lyor (Liar) would not allow Ja Rule to participate. Hence, one of the biggest lawsuits in the past 5 years if not ever. CMC originally released a couple singles about 10 years ago but, after one of the members went to prison, nothing could be done. 99% of you kids dont know what the fuck you are talking about. Just go back to being a fan and stop trying to front like you know this business.
Crumbs...

I agree, there were only 5 or 6 good songs on the album. It could have been so much better.
-
if dre n warren did some production it would have been tha shit and i agree it coulda been a lot betta
-
warren g shood of produced the damn album, but i remember reading an interveiw wit snoop and nate saying that they didnt want it all to be warren, so instead they put out all wack shit
-
TVT is a Major Indi. It's on the artist to pay for their own Promotion. That's why they keep so much money on their CDs (Close to 7 bucks if not more). 213 just didn't have the hustle.
-
Maybe my opinion and taste is just a whole lot different from y'alls...but the album definitely did not suck. I donno what it is...every since it came out, everybody I know in LA was feelin the album...all of my homeboys were playin it a whole lot and loved the album. I don't think I knew anybody in LA who didn't like it other than the LA niggs who are more on east coast dick than anything else. It was bomb for what it was, even though it coulda been A LOT better. Yea Warren didn't do any tracks, but that doesn't mean the production sucked. It was a 7/10, maybe 7.5/10 album...most beats were strong, Nate killed the hooks, and the vibe was great. Snoop came half assed on some songs, and Warren did too, but they came alright on some tracks too.
How many tracks did Snoop really "leak"? "Run up on us" was on a mixtape, and I had heard Mary Jane but it was a diff song called "that's whats happenin" and was just Snoop by himself. I hadn't heard ANY other songs on the mixtapes. And "So fly" doesn't count, because that was meant to be a mixtape song because it was over Monica's beat that had a video for it! Usually songs like that never make albums, they are strictly for mixtapes, but they ended up puttin it on the album because 213 murdered Monica's version of it.

all they need to do to sell the album is make a video for MLK. That song is HEAT!!!!!!!
even if they dropped it now it would bring a west coast g thang vibe and everybody would be coppin the album off that single even though it's not new
