BACK TO THE LAB: SNOOP DOGG
"Some like to call it a studio, but I like to call it a church," explains a visibly worn Snoop Dogg in reference to his newly aquired studio, Dogghouse. At the outset, the two-story clubhouse, nestled in the residential outskirts of Los Angeles, does seem more sacred space than studio-especially with the humming church organ intro of the FredWreck produced "Pimp Game" wafting through the air. But a cameo appearance from Bishop Don' Juan makes it perfectly clear that Mr. Broadus's sermon is more about gangsta rap and pimpology.
"It's not about an introduction or a reinvention," Snoop says of his sixth offering, PAID THE COST TO BE THE BOSS. "This is me putting out a hot record about me, where I came from, and what's missing from the game right now: fun."
Even though the Eastsidaz are completing their next album without much input from the Doggfather, familiar faces like Mr.Kane, Daz Dillinger, Nate Dogg and Warren G are accounted for. And yes, Dr. Dre is still slated to contribute some fire for the offering cup.
Snoop has also been holding a mass in NYC's famed D&D studios. "I opened up a crack house in there real quick,"he jokes. "I had so many dope tracks running through there I coulda went to jail." With East Coast staples like Prodigy and Doggystyle Records newest signee, Special Ed, running side by side with him over a funky Nottz creation, and a reunion with Lady of Rage over a DJ Premier track, tentatively titled "Batman & Robin," someone really needs to call the cops.
As an exhausted Snoop snuggles into a beanbag chair and eagerly crafts more lyrics on a legal pad, he takes a moment to reflect on the future of his theology. "We had a lot of battling going on. We had a lot of tragedy and negativity; now we need some amusement. And that's what I'm about." Amen.
