I read an article talking about how "If I Can't" was originally considered to be the first single at one point. Eminem wanted "If I Can't" to be 50's first single, while Dre suggested they go with "In Da Club", which obviously was the way it ended up. Both are real similar, but I'ma go with "In Da Club".

both great club bangers but ima have to with In Da Club

yea beat is more advanced
-
if i cant
-
I think of both as being advanced in a way. I never realized how many instruments are used on "If I Can't". Piano keys, bass, guitars, strings, horns, percussion, drums and bell hits. Layered like a motherfucker, but so is "In Da Club".

"If I Can't" sounds for Dre-like

How can't you go with In Da Club when it comes to appeal the masses. It was the perfect single to sell how 50 did. Though I'm not surprised by Em when his only choice for a first single (outside the usual corny Em or D12 shit) was HORRIBLE : Got some teeth for Obie LP. Even if he went platinum, Obie didn't sell what he deserved

if i cant isnt comparable to to in da club in my opinion.....
if i cant is sick
but in da club is a all time classic and made 50......without that beat and joint, there wouldnt be a cat as big as eminem in hiphop sellin records wise......theird probably be hardly any gunit releases out and the rest of that shit he dont ever since that joint dropped........in da club was more than huge for 50
in da club gets played out quik now cuz its been played more times than j-lo but still....in da club easily
-
In Da Club
-
I wonder if 50 would've still had a #1 hit record with "If I Can't". There's no doubt that "In Da Club" was custom built to sell, but if there's one track that's the equivalent of it music-wise and subject matter, it's "If I Can't".
-
^^yeh but i dont think it would have been as big....in my opinion...........its a good job for dre, eminem and 50 money wise they listened to what dre had to say and started with in da club, the "go shawty, its ya birthday" thing was huge, haha

In Da Club is too sick

^^Oh most definitely, that pushed it over the top as far as being catchy. I read that Eminem was pushing hard for 'If I Cant' because he felt that track was destined to be 50's 1st cut off the album, then for the 2nd single they drop "In Da Club". Imo they did the right thing by listening to Dre.
While I'm on the subject, in the same article ( I wish I had it with me, I read it in this magazine a while ago ), it's revealed that "In Da Club" was originally for D12 ( most of ya'll knew that ), "Family Affair" was recorded for Rakim but he passed on it ( :o ) "Heat" was going to be Rakim's till 50 used it.
-
In Da Club easily.
Because well... That one STILL is solid to me. If I Can't gets old really quick, and it gets annoying after only a few listens. In Da Club, what can I say... I think we can call that a classic club track already?

yes
-
in da club is one of the best produced songs ever so thats my pick
-
Eminem's choices for first singles have always been terrible.
-
"in da club"....i can still listen to this cut no matter what..".if i cant" woulda been a not-so-good 1st single...dre did the right thing...
