It's the biggest scandal to hit Southern California Pee Wee football since, well, ever. Some parents in Los Angeles are accusing Snoop Dogg of using his fame and a tricked-out team bus to lure players to his new football league, which is threatening to wipe out decades of youth football history in the area.
The peeved parents claim that because of Snoop's star power, the once mighty Rowland High School football program in Rowland Heights, California has dwindled, shrinking from nine squads of 5-14 year olds to just three, while its formerly sturdy cheerleading squad has atrophied from 80 girls to just nine, according to a Los Angeles Times report.
"I'm mad at Coach Snoop," 10-year-old Rowland player Xavier Bernal said. "He was so cool; he told me to play my heart out and to play everything I've got. But now I just want to ask him, why did he take all our players?"
Two years ago, when his sons were of age to join the team, Snoop volunteered to be the Rowland Raiders' "daddy coach," earning headlines around the world for his role as the squad's offensive coordinator. Last year, the star allure of the rapper's presence on the field as both offensive and defensive coordinator helped him recruit star players from all over the area to join the team, which was undefeated under the guidance of its quarterback, Snoop's older son.
But when he broke off from the Orange County Junior All-American Football Conference last month to form his own conference (see "Commissioner Snoop Has Big Plans For Youth Football League"), the Rowland team suffered, as did the Long Beach and Compton teams.
According to disgruntled parents and kids, the rapper, who is an alum of his hometown's Long Beach Poly Junior Jackrabbits, lured players to his new Snoop Youth Football League conference with gifts and the promise of riding on a team bus that is tricked out with TVs for watching game tape and a bumping stereo that pumped out his old team's theme song, "Drop It Like It's Hot."
Now, as the rapper has made noise about expanding the league beyond its first eight Southern California teams, frustrated parents and coaches — who admit that Snoop was very generous as a coach, lavishing gifts like new letterman jackets and jerseys and scooters on his players — are accusing him of sabotage and spreading misinformation. Snoop's camp has denied the allegations, saying his new league will do a better job serving the cash-strapped urban youth, many of whom couldn't afford the $175 per child league fees and might otherwise fall victim to gangs and drugs. "We should make it that easy to be involved in football and academics," Snoop said. (Representatives told the paper that they never turn away kids who can't afford the fees.)
So, Snoop started his own league, with a $100 fee for the first child from each family, half price for any others, with cleats and pads included.
Several parents and coaches said the rapper's heavy recruitment has hurt local schools, threatening their football programs, including that of the Junior Jackrabbits, who may have to fold after the upcoming season.
Undaunted, Snoop is forging ahead with his league, staging a benefit concert to raise money for it on August 25 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ice Cube. He has also signed up such corporate sponsors as cell phone provider Amp'd Mobile, and is starring in the movie "Coach Snoop." And, not that it's much consolation to them now, but his Rowland Raiders team from last year will soon have their own video game.

yea I saw that shit in the L.A. Times today, stupid shit, he's just tryin to have these kids have fun, and these dumb people think he's actually got a plan or some shit to take them away from the school football or sabotage or some dumb theory
he's just droppin $ and lettin these kids have a good experience, tryin to keep em away from bad shit..... people gotta complain about everything :grumpy:
-
I dont understand why people would complain about this. Its not very often a HipHop star is giving back to his community and doing positive things. Good for Snoop. Fuck the haters

They could make a case out of his drug taking though. Like Tray Dee said Snoop coaches his kids whilst he high. The parents and thier representers could start a gang of shit about snoop and his marijuana taking, promotion..and him being a crack dealing ex-convict working with kids could turn against him.
I think some muthafuckas are just jealous and they see snoops plans messing with thier own personal interests.
-
^^^ well maybe, but you're a pussy ass parent if you think that RIGHT NOW Snoop Dogg himself would do anything to your kids to harm them or shit like that ::)
come on, if you were a parent and worrying "well he did drugs and went to jail" you're a fuckin wuss, like he's gonna do anything to the kids on his team while he's the coach and there are probably cameras around the field
-
Yeah, sounds like Snoop is making it cheaper for the families to have some fun. People are never happy...damned if you do, damned if you don't.

fuck them.

This is bullshit. My boss teaches girls softball, and the same thing happens there. Parents BITCH.
They ALWAYS have something to bitch about. It's not surprising to me that they're bitching about Snoop's coaching. No parent is ever happy with any coach, and they will find something to bitch about when it comes down to anybody.
-
coz they're jealous kids look up and respect snoop more than they do them...

exactly

Long as those suckas dont accuse him of child abuse I dont really care
-
so what if their football teams are losing players to snoop's league? the kids are still playing
i like how they interview that 10 yr old to try to make it look like snoop is stealing all the kids for his own team
-
who cares
-
^^^ I hear ya, it's these dumbass parents who care :P

Man... them other parents sound like straight bitches... I thought these junior football leagues were about the fucking kids? Now they're hating on Snoop 'cause the kids want to play in his league and not the old ones. So what? To me it sounds good Snoop's able to draw these kids to some positive free time activities.
And shouldn't the parents be happy too since they're saving a wad of money when their kids play in Snoop's team instead of the others?
Man fuck those stupid ass parents for hating - it's about the kids man, the FUCKING KIDS! Let them have their fun!
-
i udnerstand from both perspectives
from snoops hes just trying to bring up the communnity and give the kids an opportunity, and thats good.
but at the same time, if i ever had kids, i dont really think i would let them be coached by someone like snoop
someone who like portrays a pimp image, smokes a lot of weed, has prior felony convictions including facing murder charges.. thats not really someone i want my kids to be learning from.

I hope everybody realizes it's all voluntary. The parents that are bitching aren't the ones that Snoop is coaching! It's the ones Snoop ISN'T coaching that are bitching... so it doesn't matter what they think of him as a Role Model, because he's not coaching their kids. In my opinion that's not really a valid argument. If you don't like him, your kid doesn't have to be on his team. They're not bitching about not liking him, they're bitching that they CAN'T all be on his team, basically.

Justin i see your point but you don´t think Snoop was around these kids parents before he started to coach the team just to give them a vibe about who Calvin is(not Snoop)? and i have a hard time seein Snoop comin to games high and wavin guns around etc. you know that when he´s not rappin he´s a regular person like everybody else and who´s better to keep kids away from gangs/dope dealin etc then someone who´s actually lived that life and knows what it´ll lead to(prison)and that you´ll certainly not gonna be successful by joining gangs and slanging. if i wanted to keep my kids away from a violent life i´d rather have them be teached by someone who knows a thing or 2 about the streets instead of some middle aged white guy who´s never set foot in a black neighborhood in his life.
