So....out of the thousands of bands over the last....we'll say 20 years....who would you say are the best voices of rock music?
I would say (in no particular order):
Gavin Rossdale (Bush)
Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
Anthony Keidis (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)
Claudio Sanchez (Coheed & Cambria)
Chris Martin (Coldplay)
Michael Stipe (R.E.M.)
Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day)
Adam Duritz (Counting Crows)
Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie)
Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana)
Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls)
Brandon Boyd (Incubus)
Chester Bennington (Linkin Park)
Layne Staley (Alice In Chains)
Thom York (Radiohead)
Add on to this list!

I don't know much about the last 20 years. The best rock singers are Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant in my opinion.
I guess my favourite to come it in the last while would be Matt Good. Maybe he's nothing special at all, I don't know. I love his voice and his lyrics.

Bruce Dickinson(Iron Maiden)
James Hetfield(Metallica)
Brian Johnson(AC/DC)
-
Bon Scott > Brian Johnson
Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, not as good in Audioslave)
Michael Hutchence (INXS)
+some others already mentioned
-
umm im not a rock fan but can i ask u guys something, shouldn't the lead singers fom Maroon 5 and Linkin Park be in the list? The Maroon 5 guy came pretty good with kanye in one song on kanye's album and Linkin Park came good with Hov in the remixes they did

I put chester bennington of linkin park in the list.....and no...i don't consider adam levine to be a rock singer....he has a great voice but i would categorize him more under a pop or maybe even an R&B category

Maynard James Keenan (Tool)

James Hetfield (Metallica)
Freddie Mercury (queen)

Best voices in Rock are the ones who know how to sing melodies as well as your typical yelling rock bullshit. The guys that sing all angst-y and shit are disgusting, I can't listen to it.
Best voice period in Rock is probably Chris Cornell from Soundgarden/Audioslave. Some of his stuff even sounds like old 20's or 30's music or something, amazing voice.
I like Liam Gallagher's voice because it has so much character in it.
I like Scott Weiland's voice similarly.
Kurt Cobain had a great voice, even his stuff like Heart Shaped Box that's kind of whiny sounded great and sincere, it didn't sound like manufactured emotion like most of your bands that are out now.
Layne Staley was great.
Chris Martin from Coldplay is certainly a great singer, even though I really can't get into their style too much, and I don't really like him as a person (or, as the person he's presented as on television, I don't know him). He does have a good voice, though.
Those are the only ones I would say have a good or "best" voice in Rock. Lots of others are decent but nothing special, just typical. There is absolutely no-one on the creative level Robert Plantt was on, as far as just being DIFFERENT... listen to "Over the Hills and Far Away". "Manyyyy times I've Loved!!!!!" shit like that nobody can duplicate anymore. His voice was top notch, so beautiful and still Rock at the same time.

The singer from Guns and Roses

Co-Sign with all of those...Layne Staley's voice was so unique..and it fit the music perfectly

Eddie Vedder Pearl jam
Layne Staley : Alice n Chains

yeah i love alice in chains. great music, what a tragedy though. i need to pick up some of thier other shit. i got nothing safe best of the box and unplugged..
-
I don't even know if I consider it a tragedy, the guy did it to himself and never learned. I guess it's a tragedy that his music's gone, but it's not much of a surprise that he is.

Prince.......listen to him talk then listen to a song like "kiss"and it's like how'd that man sing that song or the intro to "get off" :o then when he mixes his range up and it sounds like 40 different guys singing, when it's really just him layering his different voice ranges......amazing
Steven Tyler has always been a great favorite of mine, like Ritchie Sombora said "there's never been a better front man, ever" and i'd agree with him
Chris Cornell, he's a once in a lifetime talent, like Henry Rollins said " you could watch him peel the paint off the wall" and tom morello once said during recording sessions he'd be outside the sound booth door and see the door shaking when chris would go into a deep vibrato :o
bruce Dickinson is DEFINATELY a great vocalist , to me his voice is like Mountain Lions roar high and sharp but has good gut growl
I don't even know if she counts as a rock vocalist but, Mariah Carey is for sure the greatest voice that ever laid vocals down that range can not be out done
-
please don't ANYONE get me wrong here.........i'm the biggest metallica fan i know
but what's up with everyone putting james hetfield on their lists.........he's a great front man and has a good growl, and is probably metal's greatest rhythm guitar players but as a singer he's not "all that"
-
i like that dude from godsmacks voice, and kurt cobain
-

I think it`s just that it fits their music perfectly...but I gotta admit on "Kill 'Em All" his pre-pubescent wails weren`t all that great...
-
^yeah, every album it seemed like james grew a new pubic hair on his sack or somthin
kill em all his vocals were high, but he tried to growl
ride the lightning he had a lil bit of a growl but he'd hit some high notes
master of puppets he had the growl down
...and justic for all perfected the growl
black album perfected the growl a lil more then started adding more melody, and exagerted everything by ending all of his words with a -AH! "oooooooooooo-AH!" "take my haaaaaaaaaaand-AH!" "we're off to never never laaaaaaaaaaaaand-AH!"
-
i dont really agree with james hetfield...i did completely forget about steven tyler though...he should definitely be on the list.....
ya know who's voice i always though really wasn't as good as everyone says....Eddie Vedder....pearl jam is cool but i really don't think he's got that great of a voice

FREDDY MERCURY (QUEEN)...GOAT singer IMO, and Iīm not a huge Queen fan
Thom Yorke (Radiohead)
Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
Anthony Kiedis (RHCP)
John Frusciante, since heīs been able to sing
Stipe (REM)
Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
Layne Staley (Alice In Chains)
Bradley Nowell (Sublime)
Syd Barret (Pink Floyd before he turned mad...I like him a lot more than Waters, personally)
Bob Dylan (matter of taste, but his voice fits the songs perfectly...if you wanna call him "rock")
Bruce Springsteen
Chris Martin (Coldplay)
Lou Reed (Velvet Underground/solo)
Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
Joey Cape (Lagwagon, verrry good singer for a punk band)
those are some I like...donīt like Hetfieldīs singing at all
-
donīt like Hetfieldīs singing at all
i agree 100%
-
My top 2 in no order would be:
Chris Martin (Coldplay)
Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
These 2 guys's voices are just unbelievable...their voices carry their bands
and then these guys are pretty damn good also...
Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana)
Thom York (Radiohead)
Chris Cornell (Audioslave, Soundgarden)
Serj Tankian (SOAD)
-
Yeah, I don't really think Hetfield's voice is all that great, either. Probably just a testament to their, urgh, tenacity and relentless pursuit of success, though, because they're still the biggest metal act ever.
