Someone I know once tried to interview him backstage on the Up In Smoke tour; I think it was right after he'd performed "Hello" with Ice Cube. Ren had approved it when one of his posse members mentioned it to him, but as soon as he saw the interviewer was white, he said something like, "I ain't talkin with no devil *beep* and turned him back.
Supposedly, he's very hard to interview because he's always ranting about Allah and race wars and stuff like that. Plus, he seems to think that he speaks for the rest of N.W.A. when he criticizes people who show respect for the group. When Dynamite Hack covered "Boyz N The Hood", he spoke out against them (again, probably because they're white). And when Def Jam released their "Music Inspired By Scarface" compilation (which featured "Dopeman"), he claimed that everyone should boycott the album because HE wasn't inspired by "Scarface" (ironically, he didn't even write that song or rap on it - Ice Cube did).
I kinda like some of his music, but he really does strike me as being a racist a**hole in real life.

It doesn't matter to me how he acts outside of the music. If he wants to be an idiot, then so be it because he really isn't hurting anyone except himself. I like MC Ren because I always thought he was the best member of N.W.A.

Yeah, Ren converted to the Nation of Islam years ago. And yes, not all NOI brothers are racists, but plenty are. I've seen a couple who refused to work with me as soon as they saw I was Korean.
Ice Cube also converted to NOI (which everyone knows), but unlike Ren, he really doesn't seem to take it seriously at all. Interviewers (both white and black) will tell you that once you meet him, you'll find it impossible to believe he means 99% of what he says in his music (even all of the racist statements he makes) - he's nice, talkative, and friendly even when you confront him on hot-button issues where he disagrees. Some time ago when I was still a student, I attended a Bell Hooks guest lecture where she described meeting with him (she's totally against misogyny in hip-hop, of course). She confronted about all of the sexism in his music, and he was totally calm the entire time, plus he repeatedly said that he was against abusing women (and she said it was easy to believe him). Even though she still doesn't like his music, she said that he was pretty much the polar opposite of his musical personality, which was very surprising to her.

Really? Interesting then that he still seems to share the NOI's rather extreme beliefs.

If you're a fan of Ren's music, then you surely should have noticed some of his more racially charged lyrical content, especially on "Shock of the Hour". In the song "Mayday On The Frontline", he calls on the Bloods and Crips to unite and kill all white people. And the title track of the album has him describing his vision of Armaggedon (the Nation of Islam believed that in 2000, Judgment Day would come and all white people would be killed off during that time - of course, as we all know, they were wrong).
As I've said before, NOI members are by and large racist against whites and many other races. Ever met an NOI member before? I've met plenty of them, and I'm sorry, but they're all a bunch of extremists. It's sad that people like them have to give Islam such a bad name, as if Muslims didn't face enough bad publicity as it is. The fact that a large number of rappers have also embraced NOI doctrine is equally bad.

Yeah, the NGE is generally far more open-minded and less militant in its beliefs. Granted, I don't agree with them on a lot of stuff, either, but at least they're more interested in peace than conflict.
