Title: So its sort of... Bob Dylan month... who's down?
Post by: Don Seer on September 27, 2005, 11:19:40 AM
both US channel PBS and the UK's BBC2 are airing the new Martin Scorsese directed documentary about Dylan called "no direction home" in 2 parts. part 1 was shown over here last night.. part 2 air's in about 2 hours. the film came out on DVD in the US on 20th, over here its not out Oct 3rd.

personally i knew little about dylan before watching the program, but of course knew some of his music. i'm a sucker for music docu's.. so this was a must watch for me

i've been listening to dylan today ("the essential album" plus a few more odd songs) and have discovered a few songs i quite like.. the best i never knew before is "Hurricane"

Dylan is an incredible artist, a lot of good albums, and some incredible songs, such as the one you pointed out (Hurricane). Some of my favourite albums of his are Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde. Any of his 60s albums are good, and his 70 and on albums are definetly worth checking out.

He has a funny dance thing he does live. And if you like his songs his worth seeing more than once as each show is usually different (due to large catalogue) and if he does same songs, him and his band will probably play them different. That ex-bird of his that was in part1 of the doc has never given an interview about their relationship before as well. Anyone else find the Newcastle fans hilarious? I wish british rap shows were full of people like that.

ive never been a huge fan of bob dylan...i can really appreciate why hes held with such high regard and why hes considered to be one of only a few living legends, because his contribution to music in general is undeniable, but ive just never really gotten into any of his music...

my step-dad has the biggest Dylan collection ive ever seen...

Dylan is an incredible artist and maybe the greatest lyricist in popular music ever. I´d like to see the docu too

Highway 61 Revisited, Bringing it All Back Home, Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks are some albums everybody should know

Not a fan.  I of course like certain songs (Like O mentioned, Hurricane, etc.) Blowing in the Wind, the best thing he ever did was "Like a Rolling Stone".  The guy's of course a legend and I can stand it if people want to say he's great, that's o.k.  Personally, though, I can't get past the voice.  I've tried and tried, and in most cases I can, but in his, I can't.

In America, frequently at the end of interesting documentary type shows (Like on the HIstory Channel, or Discover, or whatever) it'll say (IMMEDIATELY, while the credits are still rolling!) "To order a copy of this program, please send 19.99 to ..... "

They're trying to sell the shit over here while it's still running.

Also, on MTV, they had some kiddy show like the OC (it's some rip off, maybe it's Laguna Beach, don't know for sure)... anyways, they put the Season 1 Box Set out in stores, before the fucking show even started running!  So you could either buy the box set, or just wait and watch them when they came on, lol.

I think they are already on Season 2, season 1 on DVD barely came out

and why wouldnt you buy the movie, if you are a film collector and a Scorceses film is out on DVD, most fans would get it

uhh yeah he has.. a whole bunch of albums since the 70s... for one he narrates the documentary this post was about.. and for two.. he wrote and starred in a movie a few years ago called Masked & Anonymous which featured...  a massively impressive cast list including Jeff Bridges, Mickey Rourke, Penélope Cruz, Val Kilmer, Christian Slater and loads more..  full list here >> http://www.sonyclassics.com/masked/cast.html

as for discussion of the price... 19.99 is a really really high price for a UK DVD.. even hollywood blockbusters etc come out at 14.99 or 16.99 most of the time.. at todays exchange rate 19.99 in US money is  35 USD

pay 35 bucks for a documentary DVD thats been on TV? yeah right!!

i'll probably cop it when its on sale  :D

He won his first album of the year grammy in the late 90s. Great album.
