Scott Storch
Interview by Stefanie Philippou
1) MH2- How were you recognized in the industry for producing?
Well, I was a member of the roots; I’m the founding keyboard player of the roots.
2) MH2- How did you begin being a keyboard player for Dr. Dre?
I actually got linked up with Dre through Eve, at that point she was originally signed to aftermath, and then left and went to Ruff Ryders, and then came back to aftermath, but back the first time when she attempted that she linked me up to that time period.
3) MH2- How were you linked up with Eve?
We are both from Philly, so we ran the same circles in hip-hop, and we did a record together the “You Got Me” record, which was something I produced for the roots with Erika Badu that was like one of the first records we did together.
4) MH2- Lean back was a major hit did you think it was going to turn out to be so successful?
Nobody had anticipated it to be as huge as it became, but you know, we definitely heard something special when we did it. It was made for Joe, he was there he came over my house one day and made the record right there, and 30 minutes in he took the beat with him on a CD, and a few months later called me back with the rest of the song.
5) MH2- Would you say that, that was the record that really began to launch your career?
No definitely not, I would definitely say that’s the record that made me more popular, because Joe is one of the first people that really used my name and put my name in the song, and give me props in the beginning of the songs, that was a good look and opened up everyone else’s eyes, but I had just done three singles on Beyonce’s album, Naughty Girl, Baby boy, and Me Myself and I, a whole album for Christina Aguilera and Grammy’s and all that stuff, the success is there it was just a little more hidden than people have realized.
6) MH2- You also worked on 2 major hits “Candy Shop” and “Just a Little Bit” how’d you get the opportunity to produce those two songs?
Well you know Dr. Dre and I have been working together since the chronic, and it’s just like you work hard for a camp and there’s loyalty there sometimes, and Dre has definitely proven to be a loyal person, and he knew I was capable of making some records, so he put me in the studio with 50 and we had a little success, so he ran ultimately the record they felt was the best records on the album as the singles, he had the vision and the faith in what I do and obviously what 50 did on the records and there it is.
7) MH2- It must feel great turning on the radio and hearing a song that you produced, how do you feel being one of the biggest producers right now?
I mean its definitely a blessing, I thank God everyday for this success and all I can do is just keep working hard and trying to make the best stuff that I can make, trying to do good for music.
8) MH2- You and Lil Jon have worked together in the past but I previously read that he said you are biting his style, and I read your response on his statement. Do you think he’s jealous of the fact that he as a producer has had so much shine in the past but now you are rising to be a bigger name?
I have no comment, he should be ashamed of himself, trying to even say something like that, that’s foolish, my music speaks for itself. People don’t even have to entertain the thought of that, if they have any brain in their head they can hear that my records have there own sound, and Lil Jon’s records has his sounds, I have a lot of sounds, I work on all music.
9) MH2- What’s your relationship with Lil Kim now?
Lil Kim is a friend, somebody I work with one of my clients, and that’s about it?
10) MH2- I hate rumors, and I’ve been hearing rumors, so I just want you to set the record straight, I heard that you and Paris Hilton are currently dating what’s going on with that?
We’re working on an album together that’s all.
MH2- Ok, because I heard this and I just wanted to put the rumor to rest, is she still engaged to Paris Latsis.
I don’t know and I don’t care.
11) MH2- Let’s give some upcoming producers a little Scott Storch medicine, what’s basically the first thing lay down when it comes to composing a beat?
It’s different formulas each time, but it’s kind of cool sometimes to program a drum pattern and go from there and work on some chords to some kind of a tone center, or melody line to go on top of that drum pattern.
12) MH2- Your fans want to know, what’s next any new tracks coming out?
Yeah, I got some hot stuff on Styles P’s album and the Paris stuff is ultimately the thing that is most important project to me right now, so it could definitely mean a nice breakthrough in music. We are doing something that…I like to take people by surprise, so we are definitely doing something that’s going to surprise a lot of people.
MH2- Is there an expected release date for her album?
Early next year.
13) MH2- Got anything else planned for the future other than producing?
Yeah, I’m starting a record label right now with Dr. Dre, under aftermath.
MH2- What’s it called?
We haven’t got a name for it yet but its going to be whatever, Scott Storch/Aftermath, whatever we call it, I’m not sure yet but I do know we got an incredible artist whose going to be on the label his name is Stacy Adams, and he’s an incredible MC from LA, whose doing some incredible stuff with me, and the world will definitely be hearing about him real soon, if they haven’t already.
MH2- Do you have any other artist lined up?
Yeah, I’m working with an array of artist right now, I have this girl Chambree who I’m working on, another artist called Poo Bear, whose a writer as well; wrote ‘Caught Up’ for Usher, but he’s an artist as well.
14) MH2- I’ve been seeing this track Hawk featuring Lil Jon, ‘Whose ain’t Shit’, produced by you; whose that Hawk kid?
Hawk, I think he is some guy who wants to be a rapper, I don’t think he is quite there yet, it’s not a real official Scott Storch produced record right there, it’s just a track.

Yall never heard of Stacy Adams shoes? That's the first thing I think of, not some Snoop Song. Fuck the Snoop song is ABOUT Stacy Adams shoes. They were always a little too flashy for me but I see them all the time when I'm out buying shoes.

???

Yea I definitely think of the shoes n Suits waaay before Snoop's song, which was talkin bout that.
But that might be interesting. Honestly, bein a producer, I think I can see what Scott has been doin for the last few months....his club style that blew up from Lean back was so hot and in demand, he made a griiip of beats that sound similar to it, and kinda morphed from there with that simple, crisp but not hard hittin drums, with string n "indian" melodies, which is why people say all his shit sounds the same. But he's just capitalizin off that style while it's hot, which is what Timbo did at one time, Neptunes did for a while, Kanye did for a while, Dre did back in the day, Battlecat did, and basically everybody else who is big. So believe me, if he wanted to completely change his style up, he could easily do it, and he probably already has some beats in store that don't sound too much like those beats there. And call me crazy, but as far as his production, I think his style could help re-invent the west's sound, because his tracks like the one he did for Nate n Joe Budden was hot as hell and would have everybody lovin west coast shit again.

Why would Scott & Dre put up another label under Aftermath when Aftermath is Dre's label & Storch is an in-house producer there???
-
Why would Scott & Dre put up another label under Aftermath when Aftermath is Dre's label & Storch is an in-house producer there???
Beacause Storch wants his own imprint to sign artists to, like Stacey Adams. And regarding SA, if you listen to the Eastsiderz Trey Deee mentions those shoes in like every song. He must have an endorsement or something!
-
i don't know if it's him but there was a rapper called stacy adamas on the baby ree mixtape and he's pretty tight but not incredible like he says.
-
Why would Scott & Dre put up another label under Aftermath when Aftermath is Dre's label & Storch is an in-house producer there???
Well really Aftermath is owned by Interscope and Storch isn't an inhouse producer, I think.
-
Will probably be a sub-branch of Aftermath, he should call it Storch Records, use his name for the promo.
Mad people are checking for Scott Storch, threads on Sohh & Boxden get 100's of replies and 1000's of views, as long as it says "Produced by Scott Storch" behind it, they're even checking for the unknown cats.
-
Who the fuck is stacy adams?
-
I think I've heard something about Storch working with Stacy Adams before, but I haven't heard any of his music.
-
You got to give Scott his props. "The Streets" is just a classic beat, and he is a really good keyboard player.
