Here is the policy...
In a memo issued Monday, the NBA set forth a "minimum" dress code starting with the 2005-2006 season. The following highlights are excerpted from the memo:
1. General Policy: Business Casual
Players are required to wear Business Casual attire whenever they are engaged in team or league business. "Business Casual" attire means:
• A long or short-sleeved dress shirt (collared or turtleneck), and/or a sweater.
• Dress slacks, khaki pants, or dress jeans.
• Appropriate shoes and socks, including dress shoes, dress boots, or other presentable shoes, but not including sneakers, sandals, flip-flops, or work boots.
2. Exceptions to Business Casual
There are the following exceptions to the general policy of Business Casual attire:
a. Players In Attendance At Games But Not In Uniform
Players who are in attendance at games but not in uniform are required to wear the following additional items when seated on the bench or in the stands during the game:
• Sport Coat.
• Dress shoes or boots, and socks.
3. Excluded Items
The following is a list of items that players are not allowed to wear while on team or league business:
• Sleeveless shirts.
• Shorts.
• T-shirts, jerseys, or sports apparel (unless appropriate for the event (e.g., a basketball clinic), team-identified, and approved by the team).
• Headgear of any kind while a player is sitting on the bench or in the stands at a game, during media interviews, or during a team or league event or appearance (unless appropriate for the event or appearance, team-identified, and approved by the team).
• Chains, pendants, or medallions worn over the player's clothes.
• Sunglasses while indoors.
• Headphones (other than on the team bus or plane, or in the team locker room).

My opinion...complete bullshit. If a player is on the bench, but not in uniform...i think the league should be able to implement a dress code. But the league is takin it too far. This is when you know the league is more of a business then it is a game. Fans dont give a shit if the players look professional when they are walking from the plane to the arena. Fans want to identify with the players. As far as the racism part of it, i can see how some feel that way. It seems like its mostly hip hop related clothes that are being attacked by the league. I wonder when David Stern is gonna tell Ben Wallace he cant have an afro and Iverson he cant have braids. Steve Nash looks like a complete bum...but he doesnt wear a chain, so he's ok. lol. wtf.
some responses from NBA players....
"I think it's a load of crap. I understand what they're trying to do with [forbidding] hats and 'do rags and [retro] jerseys and stuff. That's fine. But I don't understand why they would take it to this level. I think it's basically retarded.
"I don't like the direction they're going, but who am I?"
-- Spurs leader Tim Duncan, quoted in the Oct. 19 San Antonio Express-News. Duncan also said he might choose to stay in the locker room on nights he isn't playing.
"I just think people should be able to express themselves. I know they took out the 'do rag stuff; I understand that. As far as guys wearing what they want to wear, I am all for that. Who really cares about what they wear from the bus to the locker room?"
-- Nets swingman Vince Carter, quoted in the Oct. 19 Bergen (N.J.) Record
"What they do, just like anything, they go to the extreme so they can get what they really want. It's like any negotiation. You ask for something completely outlandish, knowing that we'll meet you halfway when halfway is what you really wanted."
-- Nets forward Richard Jefferson, quoted in the Oct. 19 New Jersey Bergen Record
Jackson
"I have no problem dressing up ... because I know I'm a nice-looking guy. But as far as chains, I definitely feel that's a racial statement. Almost 100 percent of the guys in the league who are young and black wear big chains. So I definitely don't agree with that at all."
-- Pacers swingman Stephen Jackson, quoted in the Oct. 19 Indianapolis Star
"I thought it was funny they can't wear any of the jewelry and stuff like that. That's stricter than the dress code in a lot of office buildings."
-- Heat head coach Stan Van Gundy, quoted in the Oct. 19 Washington Post
"No it's not a big deal, not to me. Sometimes you feel lazy and you don't feel like putting some clothes on, but this is a job. We are going to have fun, but this is a job and we should look like we're going to work, that's the way they feel."
-- Cavs swingman LeBron James, quoted in the Oct. 19 Cleveland Plain Dealer
Hill
"Personally, I like it. I like to dress up. I kind of came in [the league] when it was ... sort of an unwritten code or law or whatever, that you look nice. It even got to the extreme, with guys [who] would go all out with the designer clothes and so forth. It was a little weird, the NBA turned into a fashion show. But I think it's good."
-- Magic forward Grant Hill, quoted in the Oct. 19 Washington Post
"I mean, it's cool. It's not real harsh. It just changes the image a little. Guys just got to grow up I guess. They're just trying to exclude some things. It's simple to me. Guys need to go out and buy some clothes and start something new.''
-- Celtics guard Ricky Davis, quoted in the Oct. 19 Boston Herald
Pierce
"You knew it was coming in. I've got a couple of suits in the closet I've got to dust off. Hey, they make the rules; you've got to abide by them.''
-- Celtics swingman Paul Pierce, quoted in the Oct. 19 Boston Herald
"The players have been dressing in prison garb the last five or six years. All the stuff that goes on, it's like gangster, thuggery stuff. It's time. It's been time to do that. But one must remember where one came from. I was wearing bib overalls when I was a player one time. But I wasn't going to the games or events in them.
-- Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, quoted in the Oct. 19 San Gabriel Valley Tribune
Mason
"I don't have that many suits; I may have to recycle. I can't go to Men's Wearhouse because my arms are too long. I can make it work, though. If you've got 10 suits, you've really got 30. You just have to mix and match 'em right."
-- Bucks guard Desmond Mason, quoted in the Oct. 19 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
"I think anything you impose on players, the first reaction is going to be, 'Nah, I don't want to do that.' We fight a little bit about change. But in the end, when it all settles, and you start to realize why, and guys will come in and they'll feel good about how they're dressed and things like that, hopefully they'll start to embrace it."
-- Knicks forward Antonio Davis, quoted in the Oct. 19 New York Times
Jamison
"As far as when we're traveling, I don't see that as being necessary. We're the first ones at the arenas so no one sees us and then we're out of here and on a plane where no one sees us so why does it matter what we're wearing?"
-- Wizards forward Antawn Jamison, quoted in the Oct. 13 Washington Post
"If you want to cut the jeans out, I think that's fine. I just don't think you should have to wear a suit and tie all the time, especially [on] plane rides."
-- Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince, talking with FSN's Detroit Sports Report this week
Szczerbiak
"I think they're coming on way too strict. Movie stars in L.A., they're not always in jackets and ties, and they're setting trends, and we're looked at in the same light."
-- Timberwolves forward Wally Szczerbiak, quoted in the Oct. 7 Minneapolis Star-Tribune
"There is no GM dress code. We're not on the bench, luckily. I think if we were, I would have a problem."
-- Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe, telling the Rocky Mountain News on Oct. 7 about failing Doug Moe's dress code back in his playing days
Allen
"Sometimes, getting on the plane, with the distances we fly, you need to be comfortable. I think there is a way to be classy and dress up. I think the dress code should strictly [enforce] what guys wear on the bench when they are not playing. That is when guys are most visible. But when we are on the plane, that is when we are most leisurely. I don't think that should matter. Wearing a sweat suit with a team logo on it? What sense does that make?"
-- Sonics guard Ray Allen, quoted in the Oct. 18 Tacoma News Tribune
Kirilenko
"I don't think it's quite comfortable, but it's probably reasonable because NBA is a big organization around the world. We're like businessmen, and businessmen wear coats and suits."
-- Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko, Salt Lake City Tribune on Oct. 18
"I'm a dresser, so it's not going to be that much of a change for me."
-- Raptors guard-forward Jalen Rose, quoted by the Canadian Press on Oct. 6
"I'm actually glad they're doing it because some people come to these games looking wrong." -- Bobcats forward Melvin Ely, in Charlotte Observer on Oct. 7
Stevenson
"You get into a city at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning off a back-to-back, you don't want to have put all of that stuff on."
-- Magic guard DeShawn Stevenson, who recently wore a shirt to practice featuring the image of bikini-clad Halle Berry. This garnered approval of teammates, according to an Oct. 7 Florida Today story.

Bad Idea, they say it's a business so they have to dress like it ::) come on if it was a business than the whole Portland TrailBlazers team should have been fired by now. It also doesn't help that most of the NBA players are black and haven't wore suits most of their lives. David Stern was hands down the best commissioner in any sport probably all-time, but the last couple of years he has just been doing things that are bullshit.
-
they should all quit and let some real ball players play. i say quit bitchin, most NORMAL people who have jobs have to wear uniforms so why can they. I know a dozen college players that would wear suits just to be in the NBA, dress like you want on your own time and do what the fuck the league says.
Now ket the hating on me begin ::)

some real ball players lol. wow...how stupid was that? Id love to see em all quit. Wonder how quick David Stern would be able to whipe the piss off himself and lift this stupid dress code idea to get em all back. He's showing (like i said before) that he thinks Basketball, the business, is more important then Basketball, the game. Like a lot of employers, he is failing to remember who is important...the employees (the players)!! The only other ones who matter are the customers (fans), and guess what...they dont give a shit if the players wear suits from the fuckin bus to the Arena. They only care what these guys do ON the court. You think any of these Laker fans on here would give a shit if Kobe wore a T-Shirt into the Staples center before a game? No. Would AI lose his fanbase because he wore a throwback Sixers jersey....hell NO. And on the opposite end...do you think either one of those guys (or ANYone) is gaining fans for the league by wearing a suit to practice? Of course not. Like they say, "dont fix it if it aint broke". This dress code does NOTHING for the league except maybe cause some players to have a bitterness towards it. I think it was Stephen Jackson sayin it was racist. I dont even blame him for thinkin that. The league is pickin on hip hop related clothing...and what you have is old white guys (i think Phil mentioned "thuggery" lol), telling young black guys that they are dressed like thugs. There probably isnt one "thug" in the NBA. Shit is just silly...David Stern needs to figure out more productive ways to improve the image of his league if he thinks there is a problem.
-
some of the money these guys make, they should just stop bitchin about it
-
some of the money these guys make, they should just stop bitchin about it
Exactly
-
"Racist" motivations are definitely behind it. Noone would do that in a sport that has nothing to do with hiphop culture and those shiny, partly ridiculous, clothes you associate it with.
Still, it shouldn't be a problem.
-
some of the money these guys make, they should just stop bitchin about it
So because they make money they can't have an opinion or express themselves?
These rules are a bunch of bull shit
and what you have is old white guys (i think Phil mentioned "thuggery" lol), telling young black guys that they are dressed like thugs.
Exactly, it just shows how the white guys are trying to control a league that is predominatly black.
-
Who cares.
-
as long as the players do their jobs and doesn´t get in trouble off court no one should be able to dictate what they should or shouldn´t wear.
-
The players have a right to be angry but they do get paid a lot of money and there are many, many people that would like to fill any player's shoes. There is nothing wrong with dressing up but I do agree that there is a difference between the business and the game. For outside functions, I see no reason why the players can't wear suits.
-
they have the right to shut the fuck up with those millions that their making
-
Man, I know I'd be pissed if I'd have to dress up in a suit right before and especially right after playing 48 minutes of basketball just because it's a rule...This shit is ridiculous.
-
I dont even no y this thread was made i think its pointless

How is it pointless? The point is to discuss the NBA Dress Code... :-X

THANK GOD. They need to start banning that shit worldwide :)

we have a dress code at my work whats the big deal

You have a dress-code, but do you HAVE to wear suits everyday? And the NBA is a game while you work for a business.

i have to dress up...slacks, dress shoes, dress shirt, polo...that type of shit everyday...we have casual fridays tho...
-
These guys dont work a 9-5 in an office. They are athletes. I think this rule is complete bullshit. It does come across abit racist to me and I think its a terrible move by the NBA. Are they going to stop playing rap music in the arenas now and play shit like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty? What the fuck? I think part of the reason the NBA is so successful is because the players had the freedom to express themselves and it really appealed to urban society. The NBA really fucked up with this rule IMO.

Yes. You go to work in a uniform. The athletes go to work in a uniform. They work in their jerseys, that is their uniform. No reason they should wear a suit when they're not working...
-
If EJ Rizo is going to a meeting that is job related, can we he wear "street" attire? When the players are on the sidelines with their teams, team locker rooms, practice facilities, they are still at work.
-

They wear jerseys, shorts and basketball shoes while they work. And if they are on the sidelines sitting in a chair, how are they working? Being a spectator at a basketball game is not considered work in my eyes.
Does that mean that an injured football player should be on the sidelines in a suit and tie? I dont think so.
-

If EJ Rizo is going to a meeting he will be under dress code requirements and will still have to wear his work uniform. NBA players can't wear their work uniform (a basketball jersey) when it doesn't apply, such as an arrival to a game, a plane ride, a team gathering, etc.
-
Plus, it is no surprise really that the NBA has become a type of showing off sport. A lot of athletes have really taken the showing off part a bit extreme when they attend basketball games or at any public NBA related event. It's just like the NBA Ballerz game. It's just better this way
Btw, when you see an injured football player on the sidelines do you see him wearing jerseys with a chain? He is usually wearing a team affiliated Polo Shirt and Jeans with Tennis Shoes.
Yes they are still working if they are on the sidelines sitting on the bench. When they practice its work, when they arrive from the buses its work, when they work out in the practice facilities its work. They get paid to be with the team

Try and sweatsuit with a hoodie on ::) Even the coaches wear that shit. They wear hats and stuff....
A far cry from "Business Attire"
-
Imagine how much it sucks tryna sleep on a plane. Now imagine how much it would suck tryna sleep on a plane wearing a business suit. This is selfish and unfair to the players. Bottom line.

Agreed
-
Well they are in the grass lol. It's just completely different
U dont have to wear a business suit. A long sleeve shirt will do with some khaki pants that are very comfrotable and some normal shoes. WTF thats fucking comfortable as fuck
-
All this noise about wearing suits? LMAO.
-
Put a Suit on and shut the fuck up..It's David Stern's league and he could do what he wants.. 8)

Actually, the No Fun League doesn't allow coaches to wear suits, only clothing with NFL logos or league sponsored clothing. It's pretty ironic that in the NBA the are forcing players to wear suits and the NFL doesn't allow COACHES to wear suits.
-
nobody is forcin them to play basketball, they can quite easily quit and let someone else step up to the job. if you don't like your job, you quit, these guys should do the same
-
we have a dress code at my work whats the big deal
do you have to wear those clothes on the way to work also? Thats the big deal. Like i said...its fine to ask them to dress in a suit when they are on the bench and not playing. But to say they have to wear certain clothes from the arena to the bus...thats just stupid.
Another thing, why are people so hung up on how much money these guys make? how does that have ANYthing to do with it? If you guys are THAT jealous of the money they make...get talented at something that will earn you a lot of money. Just because they make way more money then the average person...doesnt mean they should have to bow down to whatever the league says to do. Thats ridiculous...and none of you would either. What if the league decides to tell them what kind of cars they are allowed to buy....or what kind of music is allowed? The amount of money these guys make...is NOTHING compared to the amount of money they generate for the league, or else there would be NO league. This is just some bullshit power trip and shows that David Stern doesnt identify one bit with the people who work for him. You pick a specific culture to attack...and that happens to be the culture that represents like 80% of your league.
Btw...as much as you guys are hung up on these guys salaries. I dont recall anything mandating that the owners, who make far more then any teams entire payroll, wear specific clothes. Cuban will still be able to dress in his normal t-shirt and jeans and run around on the court like an idiot.
-

Your on point, just because they make alot of money means they shouldn't have the freedom to wear what they want? And Stern has been acting like an idiot the last year, suspending Artest for the whole year when everyone said it should have been around 50 games, banning CD/MP3 players while warming up, and now a dress code.
-
What I dont get it....Whats wrong with dressing up? there ain't nothing wrong with dressing nice, thats good man, makes it look for professional, and the NBA is supposed to be professional right?...If i got paid millions, i'd be wearing suits and nice clothes with the money I make so its ok
plus with the new dress code, looks better than players dressing up ghetto lol
-

Most NBA players come from the ghetto. That's what they're used to, they're not trying to change who they are but the NBA is. And the players don't have a problem with dressing up nice but making them wear suits on the plane ride, when they enter the arena, when they're injured and on the bench, during interviews. Plus they are telling them what to wear. Most players said they were fine with banning a couple of the things like doo rags, hats, and throwback jerseys.

If they did that it would have been straight up anti-black-clothes. The way they did it now hides the true motives quite well.
-
White people and the oversees players (D.newinski,janobili,T.parker ect ect ect) have to wear suits too..this is a bigger issue then it should be.

lol so because its something YOU would do...that means it should be a rule? I dont see how people could argue this. Im fine with saying players should be dressed nice when sitting on the bench, if they arent playing. MAYBE even say they should be dressed nice during press conferences or something. But, to say what they should wear to and from the bus...from the plane...etc. Thats just bullshit. David Stern has said a million times that the game used to be like jazz...and now its hip hop. I know he doesnt like that...and now he is trying to stamp it out. The game is more popular then ever around the world...and that has happened even WITH players wearin du-rags and throwbacks n shit like that. Kids like it...but stern is trying to market to adults more. Id be willing to be there is a marketing scheme behind this. Its only his generation that has a problem with the way players look these days....not the younger generation. Anyways...the thing is bullshit. If he has this big a problem with these players culture...just come out and say it. dont hide behind the "professionalism" excuse.

What does Cuban do? He doesnt seem bright to me
he's the founder and ceo of something computer related. cant remember exactly what it was though. and yeah...he does seem like an idiot.

yeah that artest thing was fuckin stupid. it was so obvious that he was just trying cover his ass. it was such a customer service issue lol. its like owning a business and a customer attacking one of your employees...your employee fights back...but you fire him to protect your image with your customers. not knowing...youre ruining your image as far as how your treat your employees.
-
You guys are all a bunch of fucking CHILDREN. It's not even a SUIT, nothing says suit! Where does it say suit? It says Business Casual. Do you know the difference between Business Casual, and a suit? If you don't, then you're not a man. In 1960 this would not even be a discussion. Nobody would think of showing up to work, even at a basketball arena, in anything less than Business Casual.
A polo shirt isn't comfortable? A Turtleneck ins't comfortable? A tucked in dress shirt isn't comfortable? What the fuck is wrong with you people?
Khaki pants aren't comfortable? Lace up shoes aren't comfortable?
Do you guys REALLY walk around in a T-shirt, Jeans, and sneakers all day? Are you going to do that the rest of your life?
If I made 10 mill a year I'd wear a fucking TUX to that job.
-
It's pretty ironic that in the NBA the are forcing players to wear suits and the NFL doesn't allow COACHES to wear suits.
It's not ironic at all. Do you even know what the word "ironic" means? There's absolutely nothing about that that's ironic.
To explain it better, let me also point out that Basketball is played indoors on a parquet floor; football is played outdoors on the grass. If you had half a fucking brain, you wouldn't expect a man standing on a grass football field to wear dress shoes, and you can't wear a business suit if you're wearing sneakers.
Indoors, on a waxed wood floor, it's a fucking BRILLIANT idea to have people wear Business Casual attire.
-
What I dont get it....Whats wrong with dressing up? there ain't nothing wrong with dressing nice, thats good man, makes it look for professional, and the NBA is supposed to be professional right?...If i got paid millions, i'd be wearing suits and nice clothes with the money I make so its ok

There's your problem. A Racist Mentality. Just because they're blacks from the ghetto, they can't be expected to dress nice, right? We should expect them to dress like thugs.
They don't have to wear suits. Re-phrase the lies you're spewing on people. they don't have to wear suits. Nobody is required to wear a suit, they're required to wear khakis and a polo shirt. Think about that for a minute. You've got a problem with THAT? When they enter the arena, they're WORKING. When they're on the bus, they're out representing their company, they're WORKING.
If you don't like your job, leave. I agree with that.

Explain to me what irony is then you fag. And for your information the 49ers coach wanted to wear a suit on the sidelines and they wouldn't allow him.

Most NBA players come from the ghetto. That's what they're used to, they're not trying to change who they are but the NBA is. And the players don't have a problem with dressing up nice but making them wear suits on the plane ride, when they enter the arena, when they're injured and on the bench, during interviews.
I always wear t-shirts and sneakers. I don't feel comfortable in polo shirts and dress shoes, alot of NBA players probably feel the same way. And explain to me how that's a racist mentality.

What's wrong with wanting to present yourself in the best way possible? If I was in the player's position, I would definitely dress nice on the sidelines. Remember how Michael Jordan dressed? Ballplayers used to always dress nice on the sidelines, it's only been the last couple of years where things have gotten out of hand.
I have no problem with what Stern is doing.

Once again, the players don't have a problem when they're on the bench. But he is forcing them to dress like that on the plane ride, when they arrive to the arena, after the game, during interviews. Who the hell wants to be dressed up on the plane ride, they usually travel at night and most players catch some sleep during that plane ride.

If I play for the Knicks, I can wear Knicks pants and sweater. I can get a good rest wearing stuff like that

why do people keep saying "if i were a player i would want to wear a suit"? Who cares? this isnt a question of style choices. its a question of allowing your players to be individuals. the other major sports dont do this...do they have an image problem in their fans eyes? No. And neither does the NBA. Some of you guys are having a hard time thinking deeper then just "i like suits...so they should too". Its just David Stern imposing HIS style on the players. Like i said...a dress code on the bench makes sense, thats fine. But why take it to the point of telling players what to wear walking to the bus? Or on the plane? Like i said, its been obvious for a long time that David Stern doesnt like the hip hop culture being intertwined with the NBA...but it is, and he should deal with it. Its not a league full of 50 year old white guys...its a league of 20 year old black guys. Trauma, you cant speak on this....youre a 50 year old white guy lol. Yeah, this is a business...but more importantly, its a game. Fans are more impressed with players who look like they are having fun...and love what they are doing then they are with a player that looks like a businessman.

It's pretty ironic that in the NBA the are forcing players to wear suits and the NFL doesn't allow COACHES to wear suits.

I'm not your fuckin' daddy, go ask your daddy what Irony is.
"Wanted to wear a suit" blah blah blah. IT'S A FUCKING GRASS FIELD. YOU DON'T WEAR A SUIT WHEN YOU WORK ON THE DIRT. Ultimately, it's fucking irrelevant anyways, the NBA and the NFL are two totally different things, owned by two totally different groups of people, with two totally different business models and ideas of what they want their players to represent.

It's racist to say "Oh, Black people don't know how to be comfortable wearing dress clothes" or "They're black, from the ghetto, of course they're going to wear sneakers and jeans".

I already knew what irony meant.
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
You would expect the NFL to allow coaches to wear a suit on the sidelines and the NBA to let the players wear what they want. And the coaches in the 60's and 70's wore suits.

you have to remember, youre arguing with someone who has the menatality that being dressed in a suit somehow means you are dignified...or respectable. I got braids, wear a du-rag, saggin khakies, chuckz, bandanas.....everything u can imagine. and shit, i guarentee i can break down 90% of the people i see walkin around in business suits in a debate. so its just a closed minded way of thinking yah know?
