Title: Tight modern saxophon tracks?
Post by: Traumatized on October 26, 2005, 10:04:17 AM
I have to make a compilation with modern (especially, but not only rap tracks) songs, in which a saxophon plays an important role. Coud you help me out? Quik's Groove 6 comes to mind first, but then... ?

Kenny G ft Earth Wind and Fire - I like the way you move (outkast cover)

Kenny G is the biggest mainsteam player but his shit is pretty watered down.  good player though.  other REAL good sax players to look out for are David Sanborn, Kenny Garret, Grover Washington Jr, Boney James.  you can look up any of these cats albums and pick any song and it will be blazing.  all Jazz by the way.

Tower of Power has a mean horn section.  they are a straight up funk band from the 70's.  look them up too.    uh that should keep you busy ;)

Of course I also appreciate tracks from the 70s, but they shouldn't sound like p.e. that Blues Brothers stuff.

There's a track on De La Soul's Bahloone's Mindstate called Maceo's groove or something like that which features a saxophone solo.

You might want to check out Branford Marsalis.

Check both Buckshot LeFonque albums. They're SUPERB.

And everything else by the great Brandford Marsalis. And the master, Maceo Parker. Also Eric Leeds.

If you go back as far as 1978, fairly recent in my opinion, Albert Collins' Ice Pickin' album has some great sax riffs in it.
