These classics are the best albums, the two greatest that have been ever made, but which one do you like more?
Voted: Chronic 2001
-
since 2001 is more my era, I'd have to say I like it better
but there's no denying The Chronic had more of an overall impact

I don't agree with you, but I voted for the first album.

-
fuck man thats kind of a hard question. i'd have to say 2001 just cuz it still bumps all the way thru. so does chronic, but 2001 sounds better. and i yeah i dont agree they are the best albums ever made. u obviously havent peeped eagles greatest hits yet.

This would be an unfair assesment by me, since I've been exposed to 2001 more then the chronic.
Personally 2001, Although I know the chronic was probably better.

u obviously havent peeped eagles greatest hits yet.
I haven't, and i won't checc it out :P
-
easily the chronic.

OG Chronic takes this one...........I gota say tho, 2001 still blows away the competition and "Still Dre" could be the best beat of all time IMO

The OG Chronic hands down 8)

easily the chronic.

I seem to be one of the only people that think "2001" is overrated. It may have started a minor West Coast renaissance and returned Dre to superstar status, but it really wasn't that good an album. It did have some very good songs (including "Still D.R.E.", "Forgot About Dre", "XXXplosive", "The Next Episode", and "What's The Difference"), but it was also too long and filled with lots of filler. The main problem, though, is that the rapping was far too cliched and uninteresting. "The Chronic" was great because it basically played out like a good 'hood movie and had lots of personality - "2001" felt like a blank exercise in gangsterism in comparison. Also, WTF was Dre thinking putting that no-talent clown Hittman on NINE songs? He almost ruined the album for me - I'm actually quite glad Dre ditched him for Xzibit after "2001" came out.

I might say Chronic 01 is a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil overrated...meaning for people who think it's 10/10, I'd say it's 9.7-9.8. But nah...nothin on there was really a filler...and it was an album that came out and had a few songs songs I wasn't too fond of at first (Light speed, bang bang, Murder Ink, Ho's a housewife) but even those songs are dope as hell 5 years later and sound better than a lotta artist's main songs. And some beats just sound even better now than they did then, like Big Egos. I do agree that content topic wise, it wasn't as good as the Chronic, but then Chronic came out in 92 when it was an entirely different era and there was a lot more to talk about, such as the riots. Hittman was not wack at all....he wasn't Snoop but he was sick with what he did.
Just like most people say, I would rather listen to 2001 all the way through because some of the Chronic songs sound TOO outdated to me and had a strong 92, post-NWA feel to them. But Chronic had much much bigger impact, and the best songs on there were better than the best songs on Chronic 01.
Overall..I can't vote. It's almost on some 80s Lakers vs 2000s Lakers type shit...it's just a matter of taste and what I am in the mood to hear.
-
true man..
-
The OG Chronic hands down 8)
None of the OG chronic songs sounds outdated to me, but that is all on taste. However I agree that chronic 2001 is lil overrated. For a long time I thought chronic 2001 was a near classic...quality wise. Obviously it had a huge impact, but quality wise I felt it was weak in some areas(specifically the second half of the disc, plus the skits dont help). Call me crazy :-\.
-
The Chronic Damn!!!!! 8) still gets played alot more.2001 getting a bit dusty from lacc of playtime :o

Chronic 2001 is the record that got me into rap for good, so I gotta go with that one. If I didn't hear "2001", I probably wouldn't have heard The Chronic, but both are classics in my opinion. All-time classic for the first one, modern day classic for the second one.
-
The Chronic 8)
-
The Chronic sounds old but not outdated to me. 2001 is somewhat lacking on content - it's all beats, flows and smooth raps but no real content. Overrated, yes indeed, although it sure is one amazing piece of music. The Chronic takes it. There's only a few rap albums out that's better than The Chronic... And those are really amazing.
-
I disagree when people say 2001 had no content. It had a lot of personal songs like Whats The Difference, The Message, Forgot About Dre, even The Watcher or parts of Still DRE. Yeah Dre didnt write them himself, but the content was dope to me.
And like R-Tistic said, it has a lot of songs that didnt stand out at first when it dropped, but are tight as fuck now. Im talking tracks like Light Speed or Hoes A Housewife.
I go with 2001 since it's more my time, and has less filler tracks than the Chronic imo.
And like PLANT said, Still Dre is probably the best beat ever. To this day I get chills when I bump it
-
OG Chronic
-
The original Chronic by a mile. For me 2001 is a 8/10 album being kind to it, didn't get what all the fuss was about.
-
The OG Chronic, because it's my all-time favorite album together with Doggystyle
-

"Personal songs" does not necesarily mean "content" (or rather, "substance"). Just about every West Coast rapper I can think of has done "personal" songs at some point or another, but that doesn't mean their records have depth. Substance is about how you execute the ideas in your lyrics - can you do something unique that makes you stand apart? "The Chronic" benefited from its roots in 70s' blaxploitation flicks and comedy, plus Snoop's unique charm. And of course, it introduced the G-Funk sound (unless you're one of those people who believes Above The Law were the real pioneers of G-Funk), which represented a major sonic revolution both for the West Coast and hip-hop in general. So, yeah, "2001" had a lot to live up to in that sense, but even so, there was too many wasted opportunities. Musically, it did push the envelope (introducing Dre's post-Death Row sound), but lyrically, it failed to reallly capture my attention.
-
OMG anybody who doesn't pick Tha Chronic has smoked themselves retarded...
-
since 2001 is more my era, I'd have to say I like it better
but there's no denying The Chronic had more of an overall impact
-
hmm this topic again?? I guess it's that time again! I like 2001 more, but the Chronic was of more influence
-
Voted 2001 . 4 sure The Chronic had much impact than 2001, started the whole Death Row era and put the WC on top. Though when it comes to music, even if The Chronic sound was ahead his time, Dre used lots of samples whereas on 2001 it's "live" music except 3 songs and the sound was crazy back in 99. Plus I don't think 2001 is overrated, only 2 fillers (Ho's a ... and Ackrite) (and of course the skits, anyway I don't see and never won't the interest in putting skits on the album). To finish when it comes to lyrics, who cares ? It's WC hip hop and we love it for the sound ,it's not about great lyricists (outside a few acts like Cube , Kurupt back in the day , Ras Kass,...) Do you anticipate Detox for his revolutionnary sound (I hope) or to hear metaphors ?
-
i voted the chronic 8)
-
Tough choice...
although 'The Chronic' was revolutionary and had a bigger impact, I thought "2001" was more masterfull in it's production, it was telling Dre's epic story and how he "matured" and all....
Love 'em both to death, but voted "2001".
-
Add me to the list of those that feels that the chronic 2001 is overrated. It's a great album but it's not even the best album that dropped on that day in 1999. I liked that Dre pushed the envelope musically which he was successful in doing. "Still Dre" is the most advanced track Dre has done musically since tracks like "The Formula" and "The Shiznit". That track set the standard that's still be followed 6 years later. There were songs on that album that felt like to me that were just taking up space, like "Bitch Niggas" and "Murder Ink".
The Chronic had a certains soul and personality. It captured the hood and environment that people were experiencing at that time. When I put on the original Chronic, I feel like I've been transported back to 1992, right after the Rodney King beatings, the subsequent acquittals, the riots and the peace treaty. The chronic is like a history lesson in musical form, just detailing what people were feeling at the time, especially songs like "The Day the Niggas Took Over" and "Lil Ghetto Boy". Songs like that really captured the attitudes, the anger, frustration and hope that people were feelings. Duplicating a work of art like that is virtually impossible. Then there's just the gold old fashion street shit on the album and the laid back anthems like "Let me Ride" and nothing but a G thing and of course Dre Day. This album is a lyrical time capsule, a true classic and revolutionary.
-
The Chronic was dope but i was still young at the time the album came out so i listned to it but i think since chroinc 2001 came out more in the era when i appreciated rap way more i would have to say im taking chronic 2001 but the chronic was dope as fuck though when it came out
-
The Chronic. 2001 comes close though
-
These classics are the best albums, the two greatest that have been ever made, but which one do you like more?
I don't agree with you, but I voted for the first album.

I don't see how...They were equally "commercial", and that wasn't in a bad way because they set the standards for what everybody else did commercially.
-
chronic hands down.
if im havin a shitty day, and u bump let me ride n smoke a few blunts... i be in heaven.
-
Chronic 2001 was dope, but The Chronic was atleast 2 times better.
The Chronic is just one of those albums that's from another level.
Chronic 2001 was fressh and is dope, but not even close to Top 10 albums of alltime , while the Chronic is Top 3.
-
the chronic i vote 4
-
The Chronic by far for me... it's great all the way trough... and I most def agree with the ones saying 2001 had some fillers.. plus.. the classics weren't AS classic on 2001 as they were on The Chronic.
Honestly:
Stil D.R.E. aint got shit on Nuthin' But A G Thing
Dre Day shits on The Next Episode
and Let Me Ride is better than Forgot About Dre..
my opinion :)
