Title: What NON-GANGSTA West Coast rap do you like?
Post by: Eihtball on November 09, 2005, 04:44:38 PM: Seems as though everyone talks only about the gangsta shit on here, so I figured I'd ask: What's some non-gangsta rap from the West Coast that you listen to? After all, the West has a great alternative scene (that often gets overlooked).

That's about it. I really don't get how Suga Free's pimpin' isn't gangsta though, along with a bunch of other names mentioned.

Not so sure about that... What exactly does he spit that makes you label him gangsta rapper? He's recently been all about the conscious stuff and studio battle raps. That's about the most violent stuff he's done. Don't really think he ever talked about being a gangbanger or shooting guns or whatever, unless it was in a metaphorical sense.

Either way. Whatever they spit; I don't care about their actual backgrounds. Though I was always under the impression that Xzibit is a Crip...anyone know what set he claims?

Anyway, I'm surprised so many people have put down Kam...I've always thought his music was pretty gangsta. His early shit might have been called just straight "hardcore" instead of "gangsta", but his last solo album was definitely as much of a West Coast gangsta album as anything else, and he generally seems quite comfortable doing the thug-talk these days. Remember that song he did with Above The Law for the "True Crime" soundtrack?

Yeah, outside his two first albums and a couple tracks on Safe + Sound the rest aren't really gangsta rap .
