Title: What exactly was "Murder was the case"?
Post by: R-Tistic on December 01, 2005, 08:11:59 PM
I vaguely remember seein a video tape or somethin for Murder was the case back when the soundtrack dropped, and I vaguely remember it bein a 20 minute mini-movie...but I could be trippin because I was in 4th/5th grade when that dropped. But what was it? I always saw it bein promoted as a soundtrack, but I never really knew if there was a real movie for it. I just remember the cover for the album that had the (1974-1994) or somethin like that on it.

Interesting...I just searched it on Google, and it showed that it was movie that was 50 minutes long. I guess it followed the storyline to the song, Murder was the case.

It's interviews and perfromances for the first half hour, then a lil 20 minute movie.  I remember I was 11 when it came out and my parents wouldn't let me watch it lol.  I had to rent it from the chineese place cuz they didn't care lol.

Murder Was The Case is now available on DVD with some extra Snoop Dogg videos, but strangely there's no videos from the soundtrack (which was hawt).

I still have my VHS of it.

I remember hearing Swoop G "20 Dollars" in the movie when Snoop was sitting on the lowrider and I looked for that song for years until I finally found out who sang it a few years back thanks to this forum.

The movie was pretty wack though. The last part of the movie was just the music video.

yeah i got it on DVD and an original imported VHS...

up till the DVD came out it was very hard to get on VHS.. i spent 3 years looking for it on VHS.. and about a year or two after i finally got it they dropped it on DVD.. LOL!

The movie was pretty wack though. .

say whut? imo the "movie" was dope as fuck! pretty cool story and it was more a long video like jacko did it with thriller.
and remember it was in 1994. the sdtk is still the bomb.

That pretty much sums it up; Snoop & Dre were going for rap's answer to Thriller.

It's just disappointing there wasn't more of the soundtrack in the film (just beats in the background).

yeah i bought it aswell, was dissapointed at it though,
its just interviews and a longer version of the video..
if i had known, i wouldn't have given my €5 for it.

I can believe ya'll dissing this.. man I watched this back in the day when it first came out and it took me damn near 10 years to get a copy of my own.. i gave a blank tape to the dude that showed me it originally but he never dubbed it for me like he was supposed to..

Yeah, there's Snoop and the pound doing Lodi Dodi, there's a Nuthin' But A G Thang performance in there, plus Intro to The G Funk Era over the Gz and Hustlaz beat (or vice versa).

All in all it's a good collectors' package, but considering the amount of music videos that came off of the OST, there could have been more.

The interviews are good tho' - it's quite funny to see how the British reporter treats Snoop Dogg like a criminal, not knowing how iconic he would become.

The first time I got high I watched it. For a 1994 movie with ghetto production, it was pretty good. I thought they'd just do a handheld camera type thing, but they actually used film and did a pretty good job putting together a story.

That's basically Snoop's seminal video in my opinion, the beat is fucking BANANAS too.  I love in the video when it shows Dre playing keyboard, only time I've seen that in one of their videos.

If you want the best ever "murder was the case" get the one live from the MTV video awards (must have been in 1995).  Anybody seen it?

There's a big church scene on stage, with the lights all dark, and a whole choir, and a casket in the middle of the stage with a spotlight shining in it.  There's a preacher and an organ playing church music, and the preacher's saying things like "HE WAS A GOOD BROTHER!!!"... all these people are walking by the casket, paying their respects and things...

all of a sudden the "Murder Was the Case" beat breaks in, you hear Snoop "Murder was the Case That They Gave Me!" and he does the whole first verse... when he gets to the "It's gonna take a miracle, they say... for me to walk again and talk again, but anyway"  Daz wheels him out on stage in a wheelchair, and he stands up out of it and finishes the song.

Dre played the keys live from the back of the fucking stage, too.  Awesome performance, the best 'rap' performance I've ever seen on t.v.

Oh, I forgot.. the choir the whole time was going "OOOH AAAA Oooooooooooohhhh" and singing in the background like it was a church.  They blowed it out of the water.

Pac is credited at the end of the 'movie'.

Apparently, Suge still paid Pac $200k for the track even though it was never used and that started the relationship between them. (I'll post a link backing this up if I can find it, unless I saw it on one of those 'unofficial' DVDs)

si think u twisted it with the above the rim sdtk. suge paid pac for "pain" that was not used on the cd version but on the ep, the regultae single and on a few cassette versions of the sdtk.

btw O.F.T.B.´s track "hot one" was a bonus cut on the cassette version of mwtc.
