Apocalypto is the next historical film from Mel Gibson's production company, Icon Entertainment.

Scheduled for release in the summer of 2006, the film is set 600 years ago in Central America, before the Spanish conquest, in the midst of the mysterious decline of the Mayan civilization. Dialogue will be spoken in the obscure Mayan dialect of Yucatec, in the same way Gibson used Aramaic and Latin for his religious blockbuster The Passion of the Christ. It will feature a cast of unknown actors culled from Mexico City, the Yucatan and even some American Indians from the United States. The female lead is a young woman from Veracruz, Mexico.

While Gibson is financing the film himself, Disney has signed on to release it domestically for a fee.

The title is a Greek term which means "an unveiling" or "new beginning", but the movie is not religiously themed or connected to the Apocalypse.

Mel Gibson really is a great filmaker that gets over looked. He just got shitted on for his perspective in Passion of the Christ, which was a very well done movie by the way.

I wonder how accurately he's going to portray the Mayans.
He could portray them in a certain light that would put forth the "Christianity came to civilize these people" image...
Anyways, I hope this movie is as good as "Passion of Christ"

I don't think it's going to involve any western arrival from what I understand. From what I've read it's going to be entirely in mayan (or whatever the name of the language is).

Yeah I know... but if he puts them in a bad light... or tries to portray them as savages or something... then the idea of Christians settling and bringing with them the ways of the "civilized" is kinda implied... you feel me?

Anyways... I think he did a great job with "Passion"... and hopefully this will be on that level.

Yeah if he does that then it will take away from the film and make it seem like more "Gibson Bible pushing". I think the only way he can do something like that and salvage it long term would be if his next movie were to be about a Christian civilization that fell through savage ideals and forgetting the essence of what you believe. Then you could at least argue that the Mayans had it fine but went astray like Rome or who ever did. Of course I don't know enough about the Mayans toknow if that is even logical. I guess we'll have to see when te movie comes out.

I just read that the civilization went under in 800 or 900 AD, so is it goign to take place in 1400, or in 800?
