Title: New Bishop Lamont Interview: Talks Aftermath, His Album, DETOX & More!
Post by: Rebel on January 17, 2006, 10:55:53 AM
Aftermathmusic.com:
So how are things going, Bishop?

Bishop Lamont:
Just work and more work, man. We finally started DETOX and just trying to make it one of the greatest albums ever. Plus we're working on my album, The Reformation.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Tell us a little about your childhood, and where you grew up.

Bishop Lamont:
I was born in Inglewood, moved to South Central, from there to Buena Park, Moreno valley then Compton, and finally Carson. Growing up I was just the regular fuck up, man… getting drunk, ditching school, free styling and just having fun, ha-ha.

Aftermathmusic.com:
So were times tough growing up in Carson, California?

Bishop Lamont:
It was no tougher than anywhere else in the world, you know? The usual things that a young man goes through.

Aftermathmusic.com:
Since the times of NWA and Ice Tee L.A. has become notorious for having real life “gang wars” as well as controversial music that narrates that lifestyle. Do these things still have a major impact in that part of California?

Bishop Lamont:
That’s going to go on forever, but it’s not the focal point of West Coast Hip Hop.

Aftermathmusic.com:
At what age did you start rapping?

Bishop Lamont:
Thirteen

Aftermathmusic.com:
Who were your biggest influences that helped you pursue Hip Hop music?

Bishop Lamont:
Ah man there’s too many! Too Short, Rakim, NWA, Stetsa-sonics, Poor Righteous Teachers, King-tee, X-Clan, Public Enemy, The roots, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, MC Eiht, DJ Quik, Above The Law, The Dogg Pound, Warren G, Threat, D.O.C, Rass Kass, Artifacts, Redman, Boogie Monsters, Camp Low, Digable Planets, Gang Starr, Snoop, Kurupt, Rage, Nas, Biggie, Big L, The lost Boyz, Jay-z, Organized Konfusion, Krs-one, Das Efx, Special Ed, Black Moon, Smif-n-wessin, the whole boot camp click, Lords of the underground, The bush Ba-bees, The Pharcyde, The Alkaholiks, Kardinal official, Choclair, just the whole t-dot- o movement, Black milk, Ohno, Roc-c, Madlib, the whole o-x, Tahlib Kweli, Mos Def, Souls of mischief , Wu-tang, E-40, Jeru The Damaga, Tupac, Slum Village, Naughty By Nature, Treklife, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, Kwame, Kmd, Epmd, Kam, Keith Murray, The Umc’s, Common, The Fugees, the Outsiderz, Queen Latifah, Lin-q, Bahamadia, Royce da 5’9, Digital underground, A Tribe Called Quest… you name it! Ha-ha

Aftermathmusic.com:
A few years ago you would have people say that the West coast Hip Hop scene was no longer in its prime. How do you respond to this type of statement?

Bishop Lamont:
From the outside looking in it would seem that way from a commercial point of view. But on the underground scene, there were so many cats taken Hip Hop music to another level, and still are.

Aftermathmusic.com:
There was a West coast peace summit held not too long ago that helped reunite The Dogg Pound and such. Do you feel that this summit will play a hopeful role in uniting the West coast?

Bishop Lamont:
It was great for MC’s who have a past history with each other to squash their beefs, but all the new cats don’t have any beef. We all know each other so we’re doing it like the South, feel me?

Aftermathmusic.com:
Your label-mate The Game is one of Hip Hop’s hottest new stars, and has released one of last year’s best albums: “The Documentary”. How do you feel about The Game’s recent role in putting the West back on the map?

Bishop Lamont:
Totally! It was very important bringing the mainstream attention back over here. Hate It or love it, you can’t deny what he did with his debut. In a sense, he was like the Trojan horse for us cats… opening doors for us cats.

Aftermathmusic.com:
You are now signed to Hip Hop's reigning label, Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment. A label that includes stars like Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Eve, 50 Cent, The Game along with new comers Stat Quo and G.A.G.E. How does it feel to be a part of such a successful and strong family?

Bishop Lamont:
It’s a blessing, man! With so many legendary dudes, I’m like what can I do that hasn’t been done? How can I leave my mark?

You can read the rest of the interview where he talks about DETOX and more in the interview section @ www.aftermathmusic.com

Yeah that's what I've been thinking. Cause you know only Dre works on the beats (primarly) and he gets everyone else to do the vocals/lyrics/writing etc.

Props Rebel, but why didn't you just post the entire interview?

dope interview....

tho this disappointed me a little:

Aftermathmusic.com:
Who are some of the artists you would really like to work with in the near future? There are many hungry fans who would love to see a Bishop Lamont & Eminem track.

Bishop Lamont:
Me too! Ha-ha… hopefully because I’ve always been a big fan of Em. Aside from Dre, Warren G. & Busta… I’d like to work with Jonathan from Korn. He’s a beast so we definitely going to get some shit done. Mike Shinoda, Chris Martin from ‘Cold Play’, Bilal, Andre 3000, A lot of new artists and producers like Jake one, RJ Rice from the slum, Lt Moe, Thayod, Karnov, Diverse from Carson, Chevy Jones, Mike Anthony, Bokey, Indef, Reality, Blaq-thoven, Jelly roll, Da Riffs, and my boy J wells, The White Stripes… man its so many cats… especially on the alternative side.

Korn?? cold play??? andre 3000 ???? :o

"Bishop Lamont:
We got “Return of the Purple Tape” hosted by Raekwon & RZA coming up. It’ll have that ’92-’93 sound; you know… that raw dirty shit. It’s just a matter of every ones schedule! We got “Yellow Hot & Steamy (Pissing on the Industry)” with Glasses Malone & Mykestro, and we’re basically going to be pissing on the industry, ha-ha. And off course I’m putting out “Who I got to Kill to get a Record Deal, vol. 2”. "

Damn, can't wait to see that shit!!!!!

why didn't they ask a lil' bit more about The Game???

Korn?? cold play??? andre 3000 ???? :o

Jonathan Davids was on that Year 2000 track Xzibit had, it was dope as fuck...

the vocalist in Coldplay expressed love for rap in The Source or XXL a while ago.... i think they could come with a nice melanconic (sp?) beat on a track...

Andre 3000 always drops heat ;D

did the label or publicity not clear that part of the interview?

that sucks... i've been dying to know how its like at Aftermath with 50 and Game and everyone in the middle, esp. since now glasses is signed to sony managed by game's bro (who bishop is really tight with).  it seems like these relationships must be really complicated, and we have no idea how dre feels or whos gonna be on detox and all of that.  at least it still seems like bishop and game are tight.  its kinda fucked up because these guys are all supposed to bring in the new west coast and they've all supposedly been real tight with each other but everything is kinda fractured now.  still looking forward to j. wells, styliztik, mykstro, bishop, glasses, dynamic certified, young hoggs, eastwood and tech, mitchy, problem, etc. etc.

nah... Bishop asked me not to post it. Label politics, man...you know how it is. I can say this, tho... Interscope is very pissed at The Game for continuing his beef with 50/G-Unit. The problems are between Game & Interscope. According to Bishop and others... Dre is cool with both 50 & Game at the moment.

good news cause despite from all the speculation this could be the first concrete evidence that detox is actually being made and will get released. hopefully the main man nate dogg will be jumping on it soon, he's gotta be the single most important guest for making those beats into certifiable hits. some snoop would be good too.

More seriously, the process would be :

- January-August ; vocals
- September, October : last work on the beat and mixing
Nov- DEC : Release

The last part is the most uncertain (Wassup Iinterscope)

Unless some other projects get shelved this year i dont see how many so many Aftermath releases are gonna see the light of day in 06 (busta, stat, eve, game). It would be their most prolific year ever in terms of releases and with Busta already delayed and probably getting delayed some more i dont see how its gonna happen. Game is never gonna get a second LP out till atleast mid 07 and it will be a miracle if Detox is out within the year. I just hope it is.

Co sign, same thing happened last year, I mean Interscope and the Math have a SERIOUS PB when it comes to release dates (worst label with Def Jam). When you're signed on the Math, it takes near three years to release an album (unless you 're name Em or 5o and sure to takeover sales wise) if you're not dropped. In fact there are more artists which were dropped than these who released an album. We still talk about the Math but only mcs who dropped albums are : DRE, EM,5O, and Game since 1996 ! (with the Firm project). Iovine doesn't take risks and DRE can't make the music he wants, that's why I've lost some respect for Dre. Of course money wise, marketing and distribution wise , Interscope is powerful and make things easier but Dre is enough rich to do his own things  8)

Well, Busta, Stat, and Eve's albums are all done, so I'm not too worried about that.  But yeah, they'd probably need to have a 2-month gap between albums at a minimum to prevent them from interfering with each other's sales (as Interscope did when they pushed Game's album back so that it wouldn't take away from Eminem's sales).  As far as Game's new album, tho, I never believed him when he said it was coming out in '06 in the first place...I'm pretty sure "Detox" would get prioritized over that.  And Bishop Lamont - for all we know, Dre's going to do the same thing to him that he did to Hittman (not that I think Bishop deserves it - he's way more talented than Hittman ever was - but I have a feeling that's what will happen).
Title: Re: New Bishop Lamont Interview: Talks Aftermath, His Album, DETOX & More!
Post by: Rebel on January 18, 2006, 09:12:28 AM
The problem with things getting pushed back is that Interscope distributes Aftermath, Shady AND G-Unit albums. Therefore they spread the releases to maximize sales starting with those garanteed to make cake. Another reason besides release dates, is that Jimmy Iovine decides the final single (he has control over deciding the lead singles and release dates for all A/S/G releases EXCEPT DETOX). An album can be finished yet Jimmy well send an artist back to the booth a thousand times 'till he feels he's got a pop-single for sales.

MOBB DEEP "BLOOD MONEY" (G-Unit)

I'm still really skeptical this is gonna be out anytime soon.  It certainly makes more sense for this album to come ahead before M.O.P.'s, Spider Loc's, or Mase's albums (since the Mobb are probably the most popular and marketable of the new G-Unit signees), but I can't imagine it coming out anytime soon - sure as hell not in March like P has been saying.

yep you right. To be honest outside Busta, Mobb Deep and Dre I don't see other releases ( Olivia won't drop, Stat dropped or pushed back to 07, Obie far from a priority...) I mean A/S/G are the labels in which an artist have the more chances to blow up, but currently sign on these labels is a bad move
