(CBS) PHOENIX Thousands of people across the country protested Friday against legislation cracking down on illegal immigrants, with demonstrators in such cities as Los Angeles, Phoenix and Atlanta staging school walkouts, marches and work stoppages.
Congress is considering bills that would make it a felony to be illegally in the United States, impose new penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants and erect fences along one-third of the U.S.-Mexican border. The proposals have angered many Hispanics.
The Los Angeles demonstration led to fights between black and Hispanic students at one high school, but the protests were largely peaceful, authorities said.
Chantal Mason, a sophomore at George Washington Preparatory High, said black students jumped Hispanic students as they left classes to protest a bill passed the House in December that would make it a felony to be in the U.S. illegally.
"It was horrible, horrible," Mason said. "It's ridiculous that a bunch of black students would jump on Latinos like that, knowing they're trying to get their freedom."
In Phoenix, police said 10,000 demonstrators marched to the office of Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, co-sponsor of a bill that would give illegal immigrants up to five years to leave the country. The turnout clogged a major thoroughfare.
"They're here for the American Dream," said Malissa Greer, 29, who joined a crowd estimated by police to be at least 10,000 strong. "God created all of us. He's not a God of the United States, he's a God of the world."
Kyl had no immediate comment on the rally.
At least 500 students at Huntington Park High School near Los Angeles walked out of classes in the morning. Hundreds of the students, some carrying Mexican flags, walked down the middle of Los Angeles streets, police cruisers behind them.
The students visited two other area high schools, trying to encourage students to join their protest, but the schools were locked down to keep students from leaving, said Los Angeles district spokeswoman Monica Carazo.
In Georgia, activists said tens of thousands of workers did not show up at their jobs Friday after calls for a work stoppage to protest a bill passed by the Georgia House on Thursday.
That bill, which has yet to gain Senate approval, would deny state services to adults living in the U.S. illegally and impose a 5 percent surcharge on wire transfers from illegal immigrants.
Supporters say the Georgia measure is vital to homeland security and frees up limited state services for people legally entitled to them. Opponents say it unfairly targets workers meeting the demands of some of the state's largest industries.
Teodoro Maus, an organizer of the Georgia protest, estimated as many as 80,000 Hispanics did not show up for work. About 200 converged on the steps of the Georgia Capitol, some wrapped in Mexican flags and holding signs reading: "Don't panic, we're Hispanic" and "We have a dream, too."
Jennifer Garcia worried what would the proposal would do to her family. She said her husband is an illegal Mexican immigrant.
"If they send him back to Mexico, who's going to take care of them and me?" Garcia said of herself and her four children. "This is the United States. We need to come together and be a whole."
On Thursday, thousands of people filled the streets of Milwaukee for what was billed as "A Day Without Latinos" to protest efforts in Congress to target undocumented workers. Police estimated more than 10,000 people joined the demonstrations and march to downtown Milwaukee. Organizers put the number at 30,000.

They're still going to be baby penalties, plus they're not in a rush to crack those businesses down. They are still using most of the resources at the border, and clearly it isn't working. On a side note, how is it humane to punish non-profit organizations for helping undocumented immigrants?

Why were you protesting?
I do think that the border should be regulated a bit more. But I think immigrants, legally or illegally, coming here help out the country. They are the one's doing the manual labor that most Americans wouldn't do. I also think it's an injustice for it to be a crime for people to come into contact with undocumented immigrants or Churchs to help them out.

Personally I think the racism of these Mexican protestors is disgusting. They think that just because they are Mexican, that they are better than everyone else and don't have to follow the rules. What a bunch of bigots. There are people all over the world trying to get into America and doing it the right way, applying for VISas, waiting their turn, etc Alot of times the process takes years and years. But these Mexicans think that they have the right to cut in front of the line and illegally enter our country. The people out there protesting are nothing but Mexican racists walking around with their stupid Mexican flags.

I remember I took a class last semester looking at these issues...
the rate of poverty and other such things is MUCH higher than the US and gets to the point where if they don't do something illegal to get over here to the US, then life stays horrible for people
there is so much corruption in these countries, its amazing..
and there are plenty of reasons to this...a lot of historical and colonial info attached to it too,
I'm actually from Peru, moved here when I was 4
and just went there for a month last summer, just looking around at the poverty around you makes you realize who much tougher it is in other countries to get ahead,
I mean right now for example...I work part time and make $14/hr...over there, that would be amazing to have and makes u appreciate things a lot more

It's not just work. If an undocumented immigrant will seek any form of charity from a church or social group, they will have to be checked by them or else they will get punished.

I am a Mexican, born and raised here, but coming for a family of immigrants, this is what I understand.
You live in Mexico, things are shitty, you're dark, and poor, and hungry, and you have 5 kids, and they are hungry. As a man, you can't let your family starve, but there is no where around to get a good paying job to feed your kids. You have to make a decision, you stay there, struggle, and your kids go uneducated, and repeat the cycle of being hungry and poor, or you cross this fence, and on the other side you have a country which, even though you may struggle and you have a hard time getting alone, your kids will have and chance of a lifetime to make it, and succeed in life. As a parent, there is no thinking about it, you get your ass to the U.S., you work, and you get your kids to school.
Walking out of school is huge, LA schools first off are shitty, so you ain't missing much. It's got a 50% graduation rate, no matter the race, so lets get that out the way. Second, there is money gained each day from kids going to school. When you don't get an excused absent, the state keeps the money that was going to you being educated for the day. Since these kids walked out, the school lost money, therefore the economical effects are huge. The biggest way to the American systems attention is through their wallet.

yeah... I've seen the same with Mexicans that only have 1 or 2. The 5 was an example because for the most part, we do have about 3-5. But 1-2 is the same, and family is hella important, so it's rare you have a couple not want kids. That's unheard of. I know people will preach responsibility, but at the same time that's coming from the US, were it's taken for granted. We judge, and we don't think of others.

You know what M Dogg, you are probably right. If I was a poor, uneducated Mexican who had a family to feed, I probably would try to sneak across the border for a better way of life. But I am not a poor Mexican, I am an American. And we also have our own interests to look out for. Massive immigration from third world countries as well as chaotic borders has real consequences for our country that we have to acknowledge.

That is another good point. Mexicans have so many damn kids it is ridiculous. M Dogg mentioned the LA public schools are terrible, that is a major reason why. The massive immigration puts a huge drain on social services.

there has to be some more stricter laws to tone down the amount of illegal immigrants coming to america but yall r never gonna stop the migration of these ppl. for mexicans suffering through poverty and what not for them its a means of survival so u cant really blame them but i do see the point that millions of ppl around the world like my family had to enter a lottery or wahtever from south africa to escape the conditions their of govt institutionalized racism. we chose canada instead but its all good. we have so much space up here to accomadate the influx of ppl yall have down there but i guess its too cold so we dont have this problem. :)

Well, anybody including the mexicans have to see that it's a problem. I know many latinos, and one in particular came here, legally, when he was 16, and most of the latinos I know that are here legally resent those that came illegally.
Personally, I have no problem with them. I work at a latino flea market and make a fortune. The vast, vast majority of them are nice, family people, friendly and polite just trying to take care of theirs. I could see myself doing the same thing if I were in their position.
In Cali, I imagine it may be different with the gangs and such, out here nearly all of them are construction workers and farmers. I'd say on a whole, the mexicans I meet at the flea market, on a WHOLE, are nicer, more polite, and more family orientated than the white, or black people I know, on average. It's actually pretty funny. You get some white kid walking through making an ass out of himself, then some black folks walking through looking like they just escaped prison, then here comes this nice little amigo with his pregnant woman and their 4 kids, all walking in single file not touching anything and smiling. LOL. I think that 500,000 protested in l.a. and there was no violence, and no arrests shows that. They're approaching it from a very smart position.

My family is from El Salvador and we had to jump three borders just to get here but if they would have never done that then i would have been born over there in real poverty and i probably wouldnt be here on the computer writing this.
My dad is a hard working immigrant living pay check to pay check just so that i have a place to live and eat and so that i have a chance to be successful cause they didnt have that chance.
I think all this "there taking our jobs" is stupid and racist. Just cause were accept getting far less money then americans just shows you our struggle. If you would pay us alot more money we'd accept it but your not. And we got to feed our family so we accept any little bits of money for our labor.

Your proof has been only a handful of people carrying Mexican flags. I've also seen U.S.A, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and other latin american flags. Last time I checked California was part of the U.S.A. The land was taken from them, but guess what? That's how shit works. If they want it it would make more sence to demand it back and kick all US citizens out, not come here illegaly, try to benifit from the way the USA runs it, then claim it as theirs.

2. Don't worry about the spanish language that much. The people that are born here from immigrants have inferior spanish speaking skills than their parents. And this trend will continue. My little cousins who are third generation Mexican-Americans don't even know how to speak spanish lol. I don't own the spanish language that well, so it will be tough for me to teach my future kids spanish. The latino community is already welcomed, it would have been a problem back in the 1970s-1980s I seriously doubt it will get to the point where "cultures will clash". Actually, the future of California will not only depend on knowing English and Spanish plus Chinese.

But the fact is there is nothing wrong with opposing illegal immigration because it has serious consequences for our country.
I am not against immigrants, my dad was one. I am also not against Mexicans. But I am against millions and millions of illegal immigrants flooding our country. We can only take so many at one time. For one, they drive down the wages and that hurts poor Americans. Second, it is hard to assimilate so many immigrants. These people already have stronger loyalty to mexico than the US as evidenced by all the Mexican flags they were flying.

This is a contentuous issue, but so many people are thinking with their hearts instead of their heads. Whilst the situation in many of these impoverished countries may lead to a great desire for people to get out and find a place elsewhere as evidenced where I live in England. The simple fact is that mass waves of immigration like this will bring down the entire country and what I mean by that is simply this, if the supply side factors are extremely high then it becomes an employers market. So the more people that flood into the country the less the average salary becomes because there are many more people who can take the job. I would like to point out that I am not just addressing illegal immigration.
Last year that wonderful organisation which calls itself the European Union expanded its membership to include some of the eastern block, this led 325,000 people from those countries arriving here last year and thats according to the governments own figures. These people arent stupid, they speak english fluently and are capable of taking money jobs so again it has just increased the potential workforce, like I said the more people that are a suitable for a job the less the wage becomes. Which exposes the facade of "oh its just jobs people dont want" Its so desperate that its pathetic when peoples only response to this is racism, the key facts are ignored and people just remember little buzz words.

Today at my high school in whittier we did a walkout and we walked for hours all over LA and we went to other schools to get kids out to protest with us but some of them were on lockdown. And all day there were older wiser people supporting us and honking because were representing them. If they enforce this law then u see all those high school kids protesting on the street, their parents could be deported which would end up leading to more crime and the economy would go down also.
Imagine if they kicked out all the immigrants in the 70's, and 80's all this kids wouldnt even be here and i dont know what LA would be like.

Trauma: Every single "immigrant" I know that has came here legally has NO problem with illegally, know why? Cuz at least one of their family members is in this country illegally. Everyone knows about that issue though. It's one the most common points used against illegal immigration. Anything I've broughten up is to disprove some points people are making. Like I said earlier, it's too difficult to paint the perfect scenario.

There's nothing wrong with protesting as long as its peaceful so only a bigot & closet racist would be scared because it happens to be a minority group. Latinos immigrants are just as much of citizens to the US as any other citizens, if not more so in some areas. Economically, their contributions are vital to our economy, especially when it comes to agriculture. They also buy houses, pay taxes, etc just like everyone else so I think they are able to exercise their constitutional rights.
They are a hardworking people, they work their asses off to feed their families. CWalker wouldn't know this because the closest he's probably been to a Latino in Ohio was that one time he came across Telemundo while channel surfing. They can go from crossing the boarder and doing odd jobs to starting their own companies. That's a hell of an accomplishment if you as me. Most citizens born in the US can't do shit and end up doing nothing with their lives because they feel that a high salary is their birthright.
Many, I believe 7,000-10,000 latino immigrants are in Iraq fighting. I wouldn't fight for this war and I'm a citizen, so I couldn't even imagine fighting a war for a nation that I'm not even a citizen of.

I took it too literally intentionaly because I found it a little offensive to say someone is more a citizen then another. As for your question, if Mexico was the richest most powerful country in the world and the US was some poor third world country...yeah, I would consider it. But like all the soliders oversees they didn't (directly) choose to be in the war. Non of them if given the option would stay anymore then a white, black, asian or other person.

Take out the part where they make all illegals felons. I'm not sure what they plan to do if one get's arrested. I believe no where in the bill it states how long should they be locked up and when do they get deported. Basically, that person will be locked up indefinitely. Lots of times family cross the border, so if someone our age (I'm guessing 16-21?), came here illegaly at age 2 that person would be convicted and deported to whereever he was born and what is that person going to do when he's there? Being deported to a country you've never been is kinda fucked up lol. I know if I was an illegal immigrant and sent to Mexico, I would be completely fucking lost.
