Title: R.I.P Proof of d-12
Post by: .:Hercy Buggz:. on April 11, 2006, 09:11:29 AM
Proof, a member of the Eminem-fronted Detroit-based hip-hop sextet D12, was killed early Tuesday morning outside a Detroit nightclub in a shooting that left another man in critical condition.

According to NBC News affiliate WDIV, Proof (real

name: DeShaun Holton) suffered a gunshot wound to the head at the CCC Club on East Eight Mile Road, near Gratiot Avenue. By the time police arrived just after 5 a.m., the club — which was operating illegally, after hours — had been cleared out, but several witnesses have come forward to discuss the incident with investigators.

A spokesperson for the Detroit Police Department said only that "an altercation occurred [inside the club], and shots rang out," but would not discuss the shooting further, as the 30-year-old rapper's next of kin have not yet been notified.

Both victims (the other man's name has not been released) were transported to hospitals; Proof was rushed to St. John Holy Cross Hospital, while the second victim, who is 35 and also sustained a gunshot to the head, was taken to St. John Hospital, where he's listed as being in critical condition. Proof was pronounced dead on arrival.

Proof, Eminem's longtime friend, appeared in the film "8 Mile" as Lil' Tic; he also served as Eminem's best man when the rapper remarried his wife Kim Mathers in January (see "Eminem Remarries Ex-Wife Kim Mathers"). Eminem filed for divorce last week.

The shooting is the second in three months to involve a member of Eminem's inner circle. Em protégé Obie Trice was shot and wounded New Year's Eve while riding with his girlfriend along a Detroit freeway (see "Obie Trice Recovering From New Year's Eve Shooting," 1519732); police have yet to make an arrest in connection with that incident, which remains under investigation. One of D12's original members, Bugz (real name: Kornail Pitts) was shot and killed on May 21, 1999, during a picnic at Detroit's Belle Isle Park.

According to the Detroit Free Press, several Detroit hip-hop DJs, radio personalities, rappers and producers, as well as Eminem and Obie Trice, planned to meet with Proof's family at the hospital on Tuesday morning (April 11). D12 was set to begin work on its third album this month.

Kuniva dead too?! Benzino involved?!?!?!

The detroit based group D12, which was brought to the scene by rapper Eminem is today mourning their freestyle king.

Proof which was born DeShaun Holton on October 2, 1975 took two bullets in the back of his head during a drive by near 8 Mile Road. He was reportedly accompanied by another black male who also died from his injuries.

The black male was recentley identified as Von Carlisle whom is another member of D12 known as Kuniva. It's been reported that the two have died immediately after their wounds.

Investigators are linking this inccident to rapper Benzino, who was spotted fleeing the scene earlier before the incident.

Proof was a dope MC, I always felt that he was underrated as a lyricist. I copped his album last year. What a shame...

This is definitely not a good year for Shady Records. First Obie gets shot, then Em's marriage\divorce to his wife, now this.  All within 4 months... ???

His best friend and fellow D12 MC Eminem rocketed to worldwide fame, but for many people on the Detroit rap scene, Proof was the people's king and an equally vital figure in helping to establish the city as an international hip-hop hot spot.

Proof (born DeShaun Holton), 30, was killed by a gunshot to the head early Tuesday morning (April 11) outside Detroit's CCC Club in a shooting that left another man in critical condition (see "D12's Proof Shot And Killed At Detroit Club"). Friends remembered him as an unparalleled battle rapper, a creative force and hometown booster who never stopped searching for the next big thing — in high schools, clubs, conference rooms or anywhere else he could stage a lyrical throwdown.

"He looked out for everybody," said his longtime friend and former manager Mark "Doughboy" Hicks. "He's one of the prototypes for the music biz in Detroit. Proof was everywhere; that was part of his thing. He was in clubs, he was a street guy, a people's person. He reminded me of Peter Tosh or Tupac, how he had his house open and welcome to everybody. He had the biggest heart [of anyone] I've ever known in my life."

According to local lore, it was Proof who came up with the D12 moniker after the group's original name, the Dirty Dozen, was rejected because it had already been taken by another act. Along with his friend Bizarre and high school buddy Eminem, he helped launch the group — which also features Kon Artis, Swift and Kuniva — and took part in an early pact between the members that said whoever became successful first would help the others along.

Before making his mark as Eminem's onstage foil, though, Proof established an early reputation as one of the hardest-working hustlers on the local music scene, according to Hicks. "He had it in his blood, because his father used to be in Marvin Gaye's band," Hicks said; Proof's father is McKinley Jackson, a producer/arranger/bandleader who also worked extensively with other Detroit R&B acts. "[Proof worked] at a studio called Mo Master on the West Side," Hicks continued. "They made him an assistant engineer in 1991, and that's when he started making contacts. Everyone would go there and everyone got to know him."

One of the most versatile, witty freestylers on the competitive Detroit scene, he won the 1999 Source magazine Unsigned Hype freestyle competition and narrowly lost the Blaze battle that year, after hosting the Saturday afternoon MC battles at Maurice Malone's legendary Hip-Hop Shop for five years. Proof is credited with encouraging Slim Shady to take the stage for battles, a move that helped Em get a record deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records.

"He would do battles everywhere, places I can't even think of," Hicks said. "He didn't graduate from high school, but he would [perform at] high schools. To be the host [at the Hip-Hop Shop] you had to beat the host, and Proof was the host until the end." The Hip-Hop shop closed in 1997 but has reopened under new management.

Last year he released his solo debut, Searching for Jerry Garcia, on his own Iron Fist Records. The wide-ranging album featured cameos from 50 Cent, Method Man, Nate Dogg, MC Breed, Eminem and the D12 posse. The record's booklet was littered with images and references to dead rock stars — including the track "Kurt Cobain" — and the cover features a dour image of Proof holding a skeleton in a headlock. According to the Detroit Free Press, D12 were set to start working on their third album this month.

Proof was best known as Eminem's longtime friend and onstage right-hand man, a position he won after original hype man and fellow Detroit rapper Royce Da 5'9" gave up the position to pursue a solo deal. However, Hicks said Proof was much more than a hype man, helping to design the sets and draw up set lists for Eminem's show and counseling his friend on how to pace his performances.

Proof was also the only D12 member to appear in Em's acclaimed 2002 semi-autobiographical film "8 Mile" (he played Lil' Tic) and was the inspiration for Mekhi Phifer's role as Future in the movie. He also served as Eminem's best man when the rapper remarried Kim Mathers in January (see "Eminem Remarries Ex-Wife Kim Mathers"). Eminem filed for divorce last week.

In a tragic coincidence, in the video for Eminem's "Like Toy Soldiers" — a song about walking away from beef he and fellow Shady Records rappers have had with other MCs — Proof is shot and shown lying on a gurney, bleeding to death, as Eminem waits outside an operating room.

Also known as Big Proof and Derty Harry, the father of five appeared on D12's 2001 debut, Devil's Night, and its hit single, "Purple Pills," and also collaborated with fellow Detroit rapper Dogmatic on the 2002 Promatic album; he also toured with Eminem on the Anger Management Tour that year. Prior to the release of the second D12 album, 2004's D12 World, Proof released a number of mixtapes, including I Miss the Hip-Hop Shop and Grown Man Sh--. He recently launched a DVD series with fellow D12 rapper Bizarre called "Wanna Battle," in which the pair judged rap battles. The first in the series was recorded in Detroit last fall.

In February, Proof lost one of his close friends in fellow Detroit artist Jay Dee of Slum Village, with whom he'd gotten his first tattoo, an "FC" for Funky Cowboy, their pre-D12/Slum Village group (see "Jay Dee — Producer For Common, Busta And Tribe — Dies" and "Jay Dee: Hip-Hop's Shy Giant"). "No one's done more for this city's artists than Proof and Jay Dee," said RJ Rice, a Detroit producer, manager and record label owner. "They were the only people I know who would do stuff genuinely from the heart and not for money."

While the pressures of worldwide fame have largely prevented Eminem from remaining connected to his hometown, Proof was able to keep a strong tie to the scene that nurtured him, befriending many of the city's top hip-hop DJs, radio personalities and up-and-coming MCs and producers, according to Hicks.

He also continued to host Fight Club, a battle-rap competition that took place near — and sometimes in — the Iron Fist offices in downtown Detroit.

"He always had his studio open to people," said Hicks, who had known Proof for nearly 20 years and said it was not at all unusual for the rapper to be out at a club in the early-morning hours. "If you were an MC and were good, he had an open heart, man. You'd go to [Iron Fist] and there would be 20-30 people in there.

"He liked to be out with people. He looked out for everybody. He was Em's best friend, but he was everyone's best friend."

R.I.P. Proof.

My friend just called me an told me the news.  We actually met Proof on two occasions, once in the spring of 99 after the Slim Shady LP came out, and then summer 2000 at the first Anger Management Tour promoting the Marshall Mathers LP.

Maybe I can even make supplication for him in prayer, because I think he was a Muslim, cause on his solo album he starts one song saying something like "Allah, Allah, Allah, Allah, Allah-save me..."  something like that, I may go pick up the album now that he is gone.

I was fortunate enough to perform with Proof on Hallowe'en last year. He is the only big name aritst i have ever met who sat and enjoyed the opening performances (we were one of them). Then he also was kind enough to pull us aside and give us his opinion on our music and performance. If you are in the music business you know how much something like that means coming from someone who is big enough to not have to give a shit about any opening acts. This is another very sad day for hiphop, and especially the Detroit HipHop community which he helped carry on his shoulders, straight up yall. Everybody here was beginning to rebuild from the unfortunate death of J Dilla now the community must deal with another detroit legend falling. I am at a complete loss for words, i don't know how to express myself,

^ Yeah, that's more on the vibe i'm on, Don Jacob.

I'm not gonna sit here and act like I was some huge fan, I liked D12, they were cool, but I don't roll around bumping rap anymore.  I always heard good things about Proof (except when he was beefing with people) but that's hiphop no big deal, he was o.k. in my book.

Anyways, guys, life is for the living.  Proof is dead.  Don't feel bad for him.  He seemed to have a good heart and people with a good heart have nothing to fear in death.

What you have to think about though is the people left behind.  He had 5 kids.  What in the hell.  5 kids with no dad because of some more senseless driveby shooting shit at a club.  How long are we going to keep accepting that it's alright to rap about and live a life where something like this is part of what happens?  If somebody pisses me off at a club, I'm not going to shoot them, period.  That's not acceptable to me nomatter how much I get upset with somebody.  Unfortunately Proof got caught up in a situation where it was acceptable for someone to handle things that way.  Or he may have not even been involved, just got caught up in something he had nothing to do with.

Anyways, he's got 5 kids with no father now.  He's got countless friends who just lost one of their favorite people, and I imagine Eminem really was close to him, he took Proof everywhere he went.  So now you've got Eminem with all these woman troubles and his damn best friend just died.

I feel for the people involved, but I'm not worried at all about the life Proof lost, I'm more worried about the havoc it's gonna wreck on those kids.

Here's where hiphop gets real

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yellow Brick Road - Eminem

I roam the streets so much they call me a drifter
Sometimes I stick up a thumb just to hitch hike
Just to get picked up to get me a lift to 8 mile and van dike
And steal a god damn bike from somebody's backyard
And drop it off at the park that was the half way mark
To meet Kim had to walk back to her mama's them dramas after dark
To sneak me in the house when I'm kicked out my mom's
Thats about the time I first met Proof when poof he'd carry on the set
Set eyes born in and out some flyers, he was doin some talent shows
At center line, I had told him to stop by and check this out sometime
He looked at me like I'm out my mind shook his head like white boys dont know how to rhyme
I spit out a line and rhymed birthday with first place
And we both had the same rhymes that sound alike
We was on the same shit that Big Daddy Kane shit with compound syllables sound combined
From that day we was down to ride somehow we knew we'd meet again somewhere down the line

You have to see the irony in this though, the same people who are saying damn thats really fucked up will most likely be the same ones who then throw on a record which raps about senselessly killing people. Which is fine because its entertainment but those people want the person rapping it to be "real" and then when something like this happens you start taking a moral ground again, its like a vicious circle.

I just want to add that this is a big loss for hip-hop and let me tell you why... Proof was a real emcee.  He wasn't wanna of these street corner hustlers who hustled his way into the hip-hop game selling some image or lifestyle, Proof was a for real emcee; and he represented hip-hop, he could freestyle, battle, Eminem even said that Proof was the one that orchestrated their stage shows.

And you can see that like AlerG said earlier he was still down to Earth even with all the success, because when it came down to it he was about the music, and that's why he was interested in helping the underground Detroit scene develop.

Proof will be missed.  R.I.P.

i was shocked when i read that on allhiphop.com .

Same here... i was shocked...

The second victim's last name is Bender (the dude in critical condition).  Apparently, Bender's family is saying that Proof shot Bender and then Proof got shot by someone else.  allhiphop is saying that Proof "stood over" Bender ("a bouncer at the club") and shot him, then a "second bouncer" shot Proof.

"According to ABC News affiliate WXYZ, Bender's brother, Kyle, was one of the many visitors to the CCC Club Tuesday night. "What I don't want to happen is for [Proof] to be glorified as another fallen rapper hero," he told them. "It's senseless violence that's right here in our community and we can't get rid of it."

---

It's just crazy to think how things can just pop off and escalate to something like this... Shit can happen at any time... That's why I try to be chill most of the time when I'm out... but shit can always pop off...

I remember I was in Vegas in September with my younger brother and we were at Pure at Caesar's Palace and some fool started trippin' on my brother so to me that's just a trigger you know... fool is fucking with my brother, there's no thinking involved... I'ma just jump in and start backing my brother up... you know?

But fool coulda had a weapon and that woulda been it.

You just never know.

So let me get this straight...Proof blasts someone (over who knows what) and as he's standing over that person, someone surprisingly blasts him from behind...That's some fucked up shit, any more details on what went down or if that's even the case?
