It's short for the french word 'habitants'.
The origin isn't sure, some say it was the name of the team before they became Les Canadiens, and that it's also the reason for the H you can still see in the logo. But this probably isn't true, because the H stands for Hockey, which together with the blue and red C's you see in the logo makes Club de Hockey Canadien.
So Habitants, meaning people from the country (as in farmers), but also inhabitants, probably comes from the following:
When Montréal played their first ever game in the US against the Americans (former NY Rangers), people didn't know where they were from after having seen their names. Then someone from the French-Canadian press said(joked) they were habitants from Québec

Well, I used to live in Montréal so I don't really mind the Ottawa-Toronto rivalry, I just like to see the other Canadian teams do well
I'm just glad Tampa Bay got eliminated, they ruined a perfectly good 250$ ticket last playoffs against Montréal by beating us

look at who is gone - Dallas, Detroit, possibly Carolina, NY Rangers, those teams were the favorite Cup contenders

now there are a bunch of lower seeded teams playing great and just as good as those predicted winners woulda played

if I was another team I'd be scared of the Ducks, these guys got momentum with an unstoppable goalie right now

plus they got Scott N. and he's the best defender, and they're big players and faster than most teams

I think it's possible for Edmonton but ya it will be hard, cuz San Jose is real good

I would rather face the Oilers, not saying they are an easy team but I'm just slightly more worried about the Sharks

They are a very deep team with no real superstar, although they have more leadership (Peca, Pronger, Smith, Smyth) than most teams could dream of. Definitely not the most talented team, but all four lines contribute, they block an unreal amount of shots, and have, amazingly, been getting GREAT goaltending from Dwayne Roloson, a career backup. I said it all year, the Oilers would be top 5 in the league in if they could just get some goaltending- not great goaltending, just even average goaltending.... and here they are!

Having said all this about the Oilers, all the remaining teams are young like the Oil, work incredibly hard, are deep, and will do what it take to win. Should be a great remainder of the playoffs......
