Barry Zito is staying in the Bay Area with the San Francisco Giants.
Sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons that the former Oakland A's pitcher has agreed to a seven-year, $126 million contract with the Giants.

The deal includes an $18 million option for 2014 and a complete no-trade clause, a source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

If Zito pitches 600 innings over the last three years of the agreement, 400 innings over the last two or 200 in the final year of the deal, he can either exercise a player option or opt out of the contract.

Zito is scheduled to have a physical Friday, and the Giants planned to announce their agreement with the three-time All-Star later in the day. His decision to sign with the Giants first was reported on MLB.com.

Zito's deal ties for the sixth largest overall, matching the $126 million, seven-year extension agreed to this month by Toronto and center fielder Vernon Wells. Previously, the largest contract for a pitcher was Mike Hampton's $121 million, eight-year deal with the Colorado Rockies before the 2001 season.

Texas, Seattle and the New York Mets also pursued Zito, the top available pitcher on the free-agent market. The 28-year-old left-hander spent the last seven seasons across San Francisco Bay pitching with the Oakland Athletics, and staying in the area appeared to be a factor in his decision.

As part of his agreement with the Giants, Zito will fund the construction of youth fields in the San Francisco area through his foundation and donate to his charity, "Strikeouts for Troops.''

Only Alex Rodriguez ($252 million), Derek Jeter ($189 million), Manny Ramirez ($160 million), Todd Helton ($141.5 million) and Alfonso Soriano ($136 million) have contracts with more guaranteed money.

Zito's is the 14th $100 million deal in baseball history and the fourth of the offseason following agreements by Soriano (Cubs), Wells and Carlos Lee ($100 million with Houston).

"We gave it our best shot. He's a great pitcher and a fine young man. I wish him well and am glad he's out of the AL West."
-- Rangers owner Tom Hicks
New York's initial offer was for about $75 million over five years, and the Mets were prepared to go somewhat higher in average salary but were wary of offering a longer deal. Texas had told Zito's agent, Scott Boras, that it would withdraw its proposal -- valued at six years, $87 million, a source told Crasnick -- if it wasn't accepted by the end of the week.

"We gave it our best shot," Rangers owner Tom Hicks wrote in an e-mail to the AP. "He's a great pitcher and a fine young man. I wish him well and am glad he's out of the AL West."

Zito is 102-63 in 222 career starts, including a 16-10 mark with a 3.83 ERA in 34 starts last season before becoming a free agent.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound 28-year-old was drafted in the first round, ninth overall, by the A's in 1999 and made his debut the following season. By 2002 he was a star, making his first All-Star team and winning the American League Cy Young award. His 23-5 record led the league and he also boasted a 2.75 ERA.

Zito was also an All-Star in 2003 and last season.

Zito helped the A's to the playoffs in his first four seasons, but Oakland lost in the divison series every time. Only last season did the A's break through, beating the Twins in the ALDS before losing to the Tigers in the American League Championship Series. Zito's postseason career record is a mere 1-5, but he boasts a 3.25 ERA.

Zito has been known for his durability. His 173 starts over the past five years rank first in Major League Baseball.

In his career, Zito's accomplishments have earned him approximately $18 million, the amount he will reportedly make per season with the Giants.

HUGE!!! He Eats up innings. THe most starts over the last 5 years! GOTTA LOVE IT!  ;D

Barry Zito hasn't been an ace for about three years now, the evidence is there.  The team's centerpiece is older and he obviously is going to be weaker.  Rich Aurilia and Dave Roberts will not repeat last year's performances, and Alou's bat will be missed.

*Note - This comming from a HUGE barry zito fan

$126 mil is WAYYYYYY too much for him.

He has never been injured and is great for innings, he will always be there.  But he has been very inconsistent for the past few years.  Barry Zito is not an Ace.  He wasn't even the A's ace the last couple of years.  He walks a shitload of batters.  He is good, really good, but definately not worth that money.  Its a very sad day indeed to see barry go over to the gay ass giants, sorry barry but you will never win a WS over there.  I wish he would have gone to the mets.  And spice girl, once again when it comes to sports you are wrong.  This is not a great move.  Its always a good move to pick up a pitcher like Zito, but not at that price.  Also Barry had the great oakland colesium which helped him tremendously with the deep fence and all the extra foul territory, good luck in SF.  My prediction for 2007:  Once again the A's have a better record than the Giants, A's make the playoff's Giants don't.  But hell I can't blame barry, I sure as hell wouldn't turn down that money.

Of course its too much money, but they got the best pitcher on the market and sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do the Yankees ALWAYS OVERPAY but they are always competing for the World Series...Zito had a great year last year for anyone that said he hasnt been conistent. He was poor 3 years ago, had a good year 2 years ago and a great year last year. He is on the way back up and will have more run support then he did with the A's he will eat up innings have an ERA in the 3's, just like last year and win 15-20 games Just like last year..126 million too much, what but do the fans care? We made the moves we needed to make, and we will be in the hunt for the NL WEST title. If Matt Morris gets back to pitching how he can we will have the best staff in the west.

Keep in mind he has over a 4 ERA over the past three seasons.  And that was in a pitchers park with a great defense behind him.  That is not good for a guy making $18mil per year over the next 7 years.

With that said, he is durable and young, so it might end up working out.  But if you're gonna pay a guy a top-10 MLB salary, I would assume you'd get more production than that.  The Giants now decide they want to spend some real cash?  Maybe they should have done it when Bonds was in his prime.  They could have got the big bat they always needed.

Zito saved their off-season from being a complete mess (assuming he is healthy during a great majority of those seven years).  They completely screwed up by not trying 100% to sign Soriano.  He is MUCH more valuable than Zito.  And then they go out and do the typical Giants shit and add old-ass players (Aurilia, Klesko, Dave Roberts).  Sabean is off his rocker.  Thank god for Giants fans the division sucks balls

he was era last year was 3.83 and 3.86 the year before..only once in his career has it been over 4 and that was 2004. And twice it has been under 3..

Don't get me wrong. I'm not really down on the signing, just questioning throwing that much money at a guy who is not great -- especially when the Giants have been so cheap in years past.  That is when they should have spent some money.

Hey, but at least they finally came to their senses and spent it.  Their off-season went from dismal to, well, something better than bad.  Only time will tell.  I honestly do feel that Zito will pitch well... I'm just questioning a) the Giants signing him, and b) the amount of money he got paid.

As for Soriano, I think he is only getting paid 1 or 2 more mil a year over Zito, and if that is the case I think Soriano is the guy you want to sign.  He has been consistently very good to great for years now, in both leagues and a variety of parks.

Giants still need to add a big bat.

As for the A's, they haven't done much of anything yet but I'm hoping something is coming soon.  Regardless, I have faith that Beane will put out another 90+ win club.

Very true. I also think Schmidt at 47 million would have been a good signing for the Giants. Btw Benitez as the closer ouch! Im sure he'll blow at least 3-4 zito wins this year. Than I guess Huston Street did the same thing last year i always cringed seeing him walk to the mound last year.

True but he is not as reliable as Zito due to his injuries. And Schmidt seems to be on the way down, not getting better. Where as Zito is only 28 and is only getting better. And

The Giants needed this signing to replace the loss of Schmidt, but not for 7 years and $126 million. Zito is not worht $18 million per year or 7 years for that matter, he was 12-12 last year. The only reason he got such a huge contract is because the market has been inflated this entire offseason. Not to mention that Zito is going to break down sooner than later. Granted he has been healthy for the last 6 years, but he isn't going to stay that way for the next 7 years. Congrats on throwing away your chances of winning the NL West. I'm not a fan of the Giants or the Dodgers, but LA will take the division this year.

It actually does. For the last three years his BB Rate has increased, and it almost reached 4 last year. Of course, as everybody shoudl know giving up walks as a pitcher is deadly.  The first four years of his career were much stronger than the last three, why would he all of a sudden go back to pitching like he was at the beggining of his career?  What will most likely help him give him an ERA of under 4.00 next season is the fact that he will be pitching at SF, he won't be giving up the long ball as much.

No question about it?  Come on man, it's fine to be a supporter of your team but to say a statement like that is just insane.  The only upside your team has is on pitching, that's it.  On the other hand, there is upside on both pitching and defense with the Padres, D'Backs, and Dodgers.  The true weakness of the Dodgers is their OF, and they can easily get help in that department as soon at Matt Kemp gets called up.

The last three years is a better look than 7 Career starts which is just a letter in a sentence.

LOL! If youre gonna post about sports get youre facts straight please. He was 16-10 with a 3.83 ERA.
And of course eventually he is gonna break down, who isnt? Its called Age. And how do you know he wont stay healthy till he is 35 (next 7 years...
How does getting Zito ruin our chances?

Props! I stand corrected. Note to self, don't listen to friends rambling off stats at the bar.
His age is the thing that worries me. Aside from Maddux and Glavine, name one pitcher who has stayed healthy for 13 years straight? I just think that the money they threw at him was too much. They needed the signing, but they went a little overboard. As for the Giants chances, they didn't win the division last year, and all they did was replace one starter with another. That may not hurt them, but it certainly doesn't improve their chances.

you bring up good points. But I think Zito is just wanna those guys that dosent get hurt, but well have to wait and see.
Were gonna be better because we have a better leadofff hitter, our ace MATT CAIN is a year older and better same with Sanchez and we still have plenty of bats in the lineup
