Title: The Classic Albums so far since 2000
Post by: M Dogg™ on January 02, 2007, 09:30:46 AM
Hip-Hop had a string of classics between 1986-1996, the last being Makaveli. I will not count Life After Death as a classic because it was more like a respect 5 mics. From 1996-2000, only 2 classics, Outkast and Dr.Dre 2001. Since then, I will say that Hip-Hop has improved greatly since the deaths of Biggie and 'Pac. BUT, 2006 was the worst year COMMERCIALLY I've ever heard. But this year has giving me time to reflect on other years, and what have been classic albums since 2000. What albums have stand the test of time, and are still in rotation in many people's iPods, and that have changed Hip-Hop for the better.

Jay-Z - Blueprint; if for nothing else, that the production. Just Blaze and Kanye produced one hellva an album. One of the best produced albums since Dre's 2001, and Jay-Z puts his heart and soul into this album to make sure the lyrical content is close to production. Jay-Z's peak.

Nas - Stillmatic; I think so far this decade, this album is the best. There is no question that it's stand the test of time. When it first came out, people were saying that it was a give me 5 mics, that this album was not a classic. Truth is, this album is the defination of classic. Political, battling, storytelling, the worst song being taken off... lol. This album is the best album so far.

Kanye West - College Dropout; Kanye producted a classic. No questions asked, this changed the game of Hip-Hop, brought back that classic sampling sound, he updated it, and ran with it. Kanye's lyrics were surprising, in that the boy can spit fire, and people fear not giving him classic status (though this was his only classic, forget what XXL tells you). If Hip-Hop is Dead, Kanye didn't kill it.

Not quite there, but great albums:

Common - Go; some called it a classic, including myself. But honestly, it's a really nice piece of work that was enjoyable, but not a classic. Though it is a refreshing reminder on how Hip-Hop is suppose to be.

The Game - Doctor's Advocate; the jury is still out, but it hasn't left my CD player in my car since the day I bought it (the day it came out). Doctumentary was a good CD, but no where close to classic like some said, DA is WAY better, better beats (even without Dre) better lyrics, and better content. I think I was just hoping for one last G-Unit diss, an actual entertaining song that will stand out as a classic battle record.

So we'll see. But so far, in the last 6 years, 3 classic albums, not bad. Can Hip-Hop rise again, we'll see.

It's called BE

But imo "Electric Circus" and "Like Water For Chocolate" > "BE"
"Electric Circus" and "Like Water For Chocolate" are both classic.. I dont think "BE" is

I've heard from many that Outkast has yet to drop a non-classic, and everything I've heard has been stellar.

DA and Doc are as good as eachother to me, still play them both alot, jury's still out for me. he disses g-unit plenty on DA, just never throughout a whole song or very blatantly. But i feel you, a no vaseline/ether level classic would have been sick.

co-sign on the Nas, I'd even say most of nas' shit is classic (don't count i am, nastradamus,-it was written very dope though not classic).

what does BE stand for?

Can Grey album count? cause BA was dope but the Grey version is tons better, that 99 problems with Helter skelter....how can you not get a classic when you mix the beatles with a skilled rapper that's actually trying?

its hard for me to put college dropout as a classic...it was a great album and all..but the abundance of skits as well as having songs like the workout plan and a few others i don't remember keep it from being a classic for me

i definitely wouldn't put get rich or die trying in there

nor would i put BE in that category...it was a good album but i don't play it regularly enough to make it a personal classic...

the black album MAYBE...thats a possibility

There have been no classic albums since 1999....With the exception of the chopped and screwed sound (which really ain't new, but gained a little attention), nothing has really changed the sound of music & chopped and scewed is basically slowing down a record and repeating a couple of verses....I'm not a 50 fan, but GRODT is about as close as it gets  :-\...A couple of really good albums have dropped here and there, but nothing has dropped that has been a must have to own.

Hotlinking of the image I was using was disabled by the host and the image host used a really fucc'd up pic in it's place  >:(..my bad

Chopped and screwed is a term that refers to a certain technique of remixing hip-hop music by slowing the tempo and applying various DJ techniques such as skipping beats, record scratching, stop-time, and sending portions of the music through stand-alone effects to make a "chopped-up" version of the original song. "Chopped and screwed" music first appeared on late night/early morning hip hop programming on radio stations in Houston, Texas sometime before the year 2000

since 2000 to be honest, there have been a decent amount of 5/5 albums, a decent amount of classics and imo one true all time classic.....nas stillmatic......best album for a crazy ass time...but for me, slim shady lp is nowhere near a classic.......and i wouldnt consider MMLP a classic, though i wouldnt argue with those who consider it classic, simply because i think its em's best effort and everyone came on point on the album, music, em, dre and so on, i just think a few minor things let it down.....i would have given it a 4.75/5 but thats why i wouldnt argue if someone said to me thats a classic, but yeah....i agree with homeboy who said nas stillmatic was the best hiphop joint to drop since 2000

BE>Doctor's Advocate.  Album has more meaning and better production plus the intro has got to be the best intro of all time.  The closer, Its Your World is awesome too.  Other albums worth mentioning:

Jay-Z-Black Album
The Roots-Phrenology
Gangstarr-The Ownerz
Little Brother-Minstrel Show

I would almost put Fab's Street Dreams in here because it is solid but it is too bubble gum to be mentioned.

Defining a classic is a tough thing to do... Most definately a great bunch of excellent hiphop albums have been mentioned so far, but are they all really classics? Maybe defining something as a classic is a matter of personal taste, but isn't the term supposed to indicate how much one album meant to the entire genre at a time? That would mean classics are constantly put out, whether it be good or bad ones. I would personally have loved to see "dead prez - Lets get free" being mentioned here, but that's simply NOT a classic album as it had little influence on the state of rap music. Not just every great album is a classic in my eyes. A classic has it's own place in history. You're not telling me Lil Wayne's The Carter is going down like that.

i'd definately include stankonia , disposable arts, marshall mathers lp,and  stillmatic

i have a tought time still to this day calling the blueprint...or any jay-z album for that matter classic.

college drop out is a nice record , no doubt, but it's only for it's production, and when i think of classic albums production wise...i think chronic, doggystyle, 2001, it takes a nation of millions, ect. it's not on that level of greatness to be considered classic

there's a few underground releases as well, that i've been hearing that are very very quality but lack that certain something to be considered classic imo. either the production is very dry, or the delivery is too monotone and robotic.

hip hop is a weak genre of music when it comes to classics IMO

The Fix, not a classic. But a great CD.

Black Album... FAR FROM CLASSIC.

If Eminem has a classic, I'd say MMLP, though I'm not sure. That's boarder, 4.5.

BE, not a classic

College Dropout, is. Why? it changed the game, it came with straight bangers, and not one single bad song. But BE and Late Reg. are not classics.

Masta Ace, give me a link... lol.

also some old foggies were comin hard here lately

lindsey buckingham, bob dylan, elvis costello, and bruce springsting

i'd probably throw both gorillaz albums into consideration, after hip hop is done, i see this type of music taking over....ie gnarls barkley and st. elsewhere

also metal and hardcore are making a nice come back

mastodon: Leviathon, blood mountain
killswitch engage: as daylight dies
trivium:  the crusade

F you nigguh!

What you gonna do about it! Try convincing me Champion Sound is anywhere near decent, let alone being classic material with a major influence. Good luck! Until then... BULLSHIT.

I have, plenty of times. I just keep putting it on every now and then because Madlib is a great producer and Jay Dee is an even greater producer. But that album is a nahhhh to me. So explain the greatness, explain the influence, explain the importance of that album. I don't see it, and I bet you don't see it either.

I don't think there is one album that came out since 2000 that is a classic.

The closest ones would be:

Supreme Clientle
The Marshal Mathers LP
The Blueprint
Stillmatic
The Fix
Be
Stankonia
Get Rich Or Die Tryin'
The Minstrel Show
