I'm ure this happens in other places too, but the society their covers it up. This would have a very slim chance making the news 50 years ago. Families wouldn't want it public for the sake of shame.
Anyway, they should take a Dr. Mengele approach with people like this. First open them up and see if you can figure out what causes the sickness and if you can't then use him as a guinea pig to try and cure other diseases.
