No its true.

"You know, there are talented rappers everywhere, and one West Coast rapper who I like and respect is Game, because to me, he has a New York style," X told the newspaper. "But I don't like a lot of West Coast rappers. West Coast rap is too laid back, too focused on marijuana with all the blunts and low riders. There's nothing honest. There's no trouble in it, you know? There's no hardship in it. Everyone in L.A. that raps has a low-rider and a fat blunt. Back here in New York, we're still walkin' and still smokin' dirt, you know? There's no hardship in their rap, there's nothin' to make you say, ‘I can relate to that."

The West always talked about Lowriders, Smoking and stuff. It is part of the Westcoast culture, i realize that. But the new generation should step their game up and expand to other subjects in their songs. And even though many people might disagree it is a clear sign many people like Bishop Lamont or Ya Boy, cause they actually are original and dont use recycled N.W.A.-lyrics.

If the westcoast is to compete with the east and south they have to step up their game lyrical-wise and expand to different subjects in their music. Watch the south go down in a few years due to the same reasons, cause in 04/05 the "sippin syrup" and "woodgrain wheels" and whatever else was new, now its getting a lil bit repetitive, watch it getting more and more irritating with time, until nobody buys southern albums anymore, lol.

To get back to the topic; you can just rap all the time about lowriders and smoking without getting repetitive.

Man all coasts have issues. East Coast included. There are some east coast cats (Mims, etc) that need to step they game up as well. DMX was just on one with his comments. He needs to worry about making himself and his music relevant again before talking about a whole coast.

X is just a very troubled guy. I don't think he realizes half the shit that comes outta his mouth.

Him dissing a Cali rapper is nothing new, X don't give a fuck and to us, most of the LA rappers do only seem to talk about weed, bitches and lowriders.

As far as this crazy nigga saying they smokin dirt in NYC, he must be on crack. NY=home of the piff. Don't tell me he's got no money left and can only afford those nicks of dirt u buy at the Square.

And you got east coast cats like Ja Rule having lowriders in they videos. Funkmaster Flex in Still Dre video. And east coast cats smoke alot too. The trends now in music is for everyone to collabo with one "hot" artist, or emulate they style. Like Fat Joe's album at times sounds like a Rick Ross or Lil Wayne album. Not enough creativity in the game because people would rather make what they think someone wants to hear instead of making dope innovative music. And that is all coasts.

What I don't understand, is how the fuck is DMX not in jail? Doesn't he get arrested 2-3 times a year for doing something violent or unreasonable on the road? And I don't think it's crack he's on. X is too motivated to be a crack head, this boy's gotta be smoking that dust.

I think he said on his show on BET that those tickets in NY were just speeding tickets and reckless driving and their is no limit to how many you can get and they can't revoke your license. Out on the west coast his license would have been gone after the 3 offense. That is why he sticks to driving out in the desert in Arizona or have someone drive him in town.

I'm in Jersey, we have a point system for moving vioaltions. He's got at least 10 of them lol. NY has the same thing I'm pretty sure. He must still have some money left, if he's able to get out of this constantly. And it's not like they were regular moving violations, it's always something bizarre. Like driving on the shoulder of the road ( on a bridge noless ), to get around a traffic jam, in a Range Rover!

Westcoast heads, don't get upset by what DMX says. He's a wack job, always has been.

furthermore, Xander....I see what you are saying but that shit IS the reality of our lives. i've been on the 10 east, dippin' back from long beach bumpin' more bounce to the ounce with a pound in the trunk and a blunt in my mouth.....and I'm small time, man. That shit is the reality of California living and for rappers here to act otherwise would betray every g in LA, it would be selling out.

Marijuana IS a HUGE part of CA's culture. it's our number one cash crop....the shit is legal medicinally here. I'ma caretaker, i can go to studio city and pick up herb at a dispensary....it ain't like that for DMX, he's hatin cause he can't relate.

and frankly, i LOVE when west coast rappers talk about smokin' blunts and dippin' around the city...that's my life(at least a part of it, dig?) and I like to soundtrack it. GOTTA have music to smoke to, ALWAYS.

PLUS, there's PLENTY of rappers that talk about other shit. even some west coast ones like sly boogy, crooked i, and Murs (all 3 of which i believe smoke weed too though)......damn....isn't it a FUCKIN' shame that out of the 3 artists I just named...you can only go to the store and pick up records from one of 'em?
damn.

anyway, there's other rappers so if that shit bores you it doesn't mean they have to change it up. it means you gotta disc change it up, you know?

how is dogs a blood acronym?

and frankly, i LOVE when west coast rappers talk about smokin' blunts and dippin' around the city...that's my life(at least a part of it, dig?) and I like to soundtrack it. GOTTA have music to smoke to, ALWAYS.

PLUS, there's PLENTY of rappers that talk about other shit. even some west coast ones like sly boogy, crooked i, and Murs (all 3 of which i believe smoke weed too though)......damn....isn't it a FUCKIN' shame that out of the 3 artists I just named...you can only go to the store and pick up records from one of 'em?
damn

how is dogs a blood acronym?

Bloods refer to each other as dog, I think it's same thing on the West. Just like a crip would be cuzz.

it's funny of all people DMX is saying this considering he nearly signed with Death Row in the mid 90's and works with Kartoon, who's a west coast artist on Ruff Ryders.  If Jay-Z and 50 cent were to say something like this, it'd be somewhat of a big deal (but they've bitten so much from the west coast rap culture that it'd be stupid for them to diss the west coast in the first place), but considering its DMX, just brush these comments aside

i've been thinking that for a while but I have a feeling it would throw a monkey wrench into my dre archive organization, he raps over alot of old dre beats often doesn't he? that would be pretty dope.

i'm down for the UKWII vol.1-3 if anyone's willing to hook it

I think he was referring to my comment about Jay being able to walk through the hoods of NJ, NY. Youre right, someone would start shooting or try to jux.

Since I know alot of yall hate anything Jay-Z related here's a funny fact: Memphis Bleek is married to a girl who is the daughter of one of my high school teachers. He resides in a town called Keyport, which is the next town over from me. Bleek has been robbed not once, not twice but a rumored 5 times being out here. You don't have to believe me, but when do I ever post gossip?

to my original post, i have not seen any comment which is about the post itself, maybe 1 or 2 posts, nothing more definately.

I took X's statement, and i connected it with the recent westcoast developments and with the last years. I am not saying X's statement is totally true, im not saying hes not a crackhead, im not saying he never did any westcoast cat. All im saying is that he got some truth in that interview.

WHen you think about it, the west is not blowing up, and all this "new west" movement, who can make a hot mixtape, get signed to a major and then fail to drop anything isnt helping the west come back.

Whatever the reasons are for the majors not to put out any albums of these new west cats is not part of this discussion, and im not gonna go into it right now. It is a fact that every "good westcoast album" we appreciate and look forward to drop, nowadays is from a veteran (like Snoop, Cube, Dre etc.) and apart from The Game, there is NO younger westcoast star who makes albums the mainstream likes.

All we get is recycled lyrics from the old stars about lowriders and weed (Smoke Some Weed, anyone??) and whatever else. All i said was if the west is to compete with the south and east, they have to evolve, and not stay in the golden era forever, cause outside the west, the world has moved on, like it or not.

And no matter how much anyone in here (including myself) may like a DPG album, or a Ice Cube record, it is still the same old shit, if you feeling me.

I hope Bishop Lamont can actually make a westcoast album containing a new formula. Cause the old one isnt working.

"Every coast has problems" is stupid to say. The east doesnt sell much either, but they still manage to put out decent, original eastcoast-albums every year, and not just the veterans like Nas.

For the south, they have unity, everything that blows up these days is from the south. Everyone saying its wack Mike Jones sold so much, that is true, but it is the state of the game. We have to accept that saleswise and fanwise Mike Jones >>>> Westcoast.

And that says a lot. The west needs to form one group to be really succesful. Why do you think the west was running things back in the G-Funk era? There was just a select few who put out great westcoast albums and helped evolve the G-Funk style. And lets face it, apart from Cube, Eazy etc. It was basically Death Row....nowadays everyone on the west is beefing over nothing (Daz, anyone???) and thats NOT helping.

Anyways these are just my thoughts. Peace and +1 to everyone who came with good arguments. Its all good, nah its all hood.  ;)

Exactly. I agree 100%.

14 years ago, I was ridin' 100% for the west coast. I used to be up in the underground scene, and when a New Yorker would come through talking shit, I'd serve em. Then when east coast rappers blew up using gangsta rap (Mobb Deep, Black Moon, Biggie, Nas, Wu-Tang), I had more than enough lyrical ammunition to serve mufuckas.

Now I look at the west coast and I shake my head. You have to admit, outside of a few heads here and there, it's mostly garbage. I don't know how anyone with a straight face can say that DPG is still tight. They're an embarassment. Most of these new cats coming out are trying to blow up off their gang affiliations or who they're daddy is instead of talent, paying dues and having hip hop credentials. In the 90's cats paid they dues. They were up in the trenches battling. That's what gave Cube, Kurupt and Snoop the right talk all the shit they did. Nowadays these wack fucks with a gang affiliation think they're entitled to the world just because they dropped a garbage mixtape and can occasionally rhyme words.

Face it, aside from a few folks, the west coast fell the fuck off hard, you can't really deny that. How long can you rap about the same old stuff? Switch shit up a ittle bit. That goes for the new west and the old west. Some rappers just need to retire and go behind the scenes and some of the new cats should try something else for a living. Leave hip hop for cats with talent that paid dues and actually love and live hip hop.

Tha south, them niggas juss tryna git money, thas y all that shit sounds tha same, its club music and its a different world down there, definatly not 100(%) like da East... wen niggas own up 2 da truth then it'll sound different but until then tha biggest artists comin out from tha west is only tha niggas branchin off da NWA-Tree (and dont say Pac, cuz that nigga from da East)...  oh yea as far as smokin weed, it prolly is tha Cali lifestyle, but if u ever been ANYWHERE else in tha world EVERYBODY rides and smokes griddle, its just wat niggas do.

+1 to both of you, thats what i meant with my 2 earlier posts. rappers (old and new) stick to much to the succesformula of rap in the golden era for the west.

To comment on Tanj, im not from the westcoast, so maybe its easier for me to criticize it, since i cant realte to 100% of the music, but you gotta understand that i cant relate to eastcoast or south to the fullest as well, and right now i have to admit i like south over east and west. it is going against the grain to actually speak against a culture, but i got the balls to say it, if westcoast rap wants to get at least some shine again, they will have to switch up their music. cause it might be cool music to you, but to the rest of the world except cali it is getting played out, same old songs, same old concepts, same old subjects etc.

i dont want to criticize anyone's culture, cause i realize how important that is, but like you said, a rapper can be from the west and rap about different things then just the culture. but fact is, the westcoast culture used to be a export-product for music, and it sold. nowadays peeps still sellin it, but almost nobody wants to buy it anymore, its not new anymore, so its time for the west to switch up styles. not all rappers should, but at least a grip of up and coming talent should talk about different things then just lowriders, weed, crip/blood/gang-affiliations etc. the world doesnt want that anymore, simple...

if you like the music as it is right now, then i ask you this, do you want it to stay like this forever? or do you want cali blow the fuck up again? cause theres def some talented dudes that can be part of a revival of the west, like ya boy, bishop lamont.

i love the westcoast, but im not from there, so its easy for me to comment on it, but this is my truest opinion though.

i feel that, i agree. i don't want a grip of new rappers tryna be the next snoop, next cube, next pac or whatever but the people that do that g funk centric shit well, I think have a right to still do it as well as some new cats that do it well (Game is an interesting experiment in meta cognition at worst)

+1 man, i didnt mean to criticize any culture, just a part of the music. its cool if there are g-funk cats in the future, just like rock still got the rollin stones for example, but i dont want west coast rap to stagnate and stay on the same level while the rest moves on.

i can definately see the eastcoast step their game up the last months, and with new talents like papoose, jin etc. over there i can see them get on top of things again. the south is still popular, but wait til they get in the west' position in a while, then htey will have to come up with something new again as well, since the "sippin syrup" and "woodgrain" in their lyrics is getting played out too...

i just want the west to shine, and if that takes inventing a new style in (westcoast)rap apart from the old g-funk and gangsta-rap, then so be it. the world is changing and not everything stays like it is right now, its hard to accept if its a part of your own culture, but in the end it might be necessary.

It's all about being an artists. The reason why the west was on top is because we had artists. It didn't matter what genre of west coast rap you were into. You listened to Pharcyde, you heard artists. You listened to $hort and the Dangerous Crew, you heard artists. You listened to Death Row, you heard artists. You listened to the Likwit crew, you heard artists. These are guys that paid dues. They did the hole in the wall house parties and dive bars. They were in the battle rap circuits. They did tours and opened up for established artists. They hustled they're ass off. They signed fucked up record deals just to get their music out there and heard. They were hungry and most of all, these dudes loved the music. You could hear it in the music. You can tell if someone loves the music just by listening to it. Whether it was a backpacker, pimp or gangbanger, it didn't matter, these were hip hop dudes that loved the music and the culture.

A lot of the new cats are not artists. They're just dudes throwing words together. That's the main difference. Where are the Busta Rhymes of the west coast? The Ghostface Killah's of the west coast? The Common's of the west coast? The Nas's of the west coast? It's only a handful of people and that's it. That's the problem. The love isn't there, that's the problem. In NY and the South, there are plenty of garbage acts but there are plenty of passionate artists to offset the wackness. Where are our artists? There are only a few.

so what ya sayin is the east has its wack artists like say 50, then it has is true hip hop artists like wu tang or pete rock

the thing with the west is, i tihnk its flooded with bullshit like, shit mixtapes and pretend gangbangers, that the real shit cant get tru

and every one wanted there own bussiness and lable its stupid, thay need to work together and be on each others lable insted of allways wantin to be the boss....
thne when ya got lables packed with great artist, then i think the west will be noticed

these last two posts^^ are a good argument for older acts like snoop/cube changing their topic matter...because in what they are saying they are giving young CA cats the wrong impression: that if you're a crip/blood you can get a record deal and the really artistic rappin' cats out in CA are discouraged from rapping because they are not gangster.

damn....that's real spit....

Yeah, thats what i was trying to say with swiutching their styles up. They need to get off that (mostly fake) gangbang shit and start puttin in some effort in their music. We, as fans, deserve that much.
Title: Re: DMX Talkin' Slick About The West Coast

but the counter argument to that would be that: it's not snoop/cube etc. fault that the young cats get that impression. in fact, older gangster rappers are always tellin young gangster rappers to stop doin' that shit, stop bitin, stop fakin etc.

it's the younger generation (i.e. a cat like B. Lamont...NOT a cat like 40 glocc or spider loc?) that needs to step their game up and do something different...

come to think of it that's why cats like OutKast and Lupe Fiasco get popular, cause they're bringin' somethin' different out of their region. People want to see that on the west coast.

and yeah, there are way less artists than hustlers now in hip hop, especially in CA where shit is so expensive. c.r.e.a.m.
