Title: Should I go back to college and waste my time and money?
Post by: TraceOneInfinite Flat Earther 96' on May 29, 2007, 03:02:09 PM
I got to make a desicion quick. My fee's are due tomarrow. Over 1,000 dollars to take just 3 classes. The last 3 classes I have to take for an associates degree (which doesn't really do anything, but after that I have another 2 years atleast of degree courses to look forward to).

I already work in hospitals and nursing homes as a Medicine and patient care technician. I don't make much money, but since I live by such small means, I am able to save a little something each month.

But if I go back to college that will waste my time so I won't be able to study the things I'm really interested in (stuff they don't teach in school) and also blow my savings so I won't be able to do things I want to do like travel and study in Muslim countries.

By the way you're talking it sounds like your mind is made up.  If your attitude is that it is a waste of time and money, then no you shouldn't go.  For me college was the greatest time in my life, so I'd recommend everyone do it.  But I understand it's not for everybody, and if you walk into it thinking it is going to be a waste, then it will be.

I feel you, man, I'm also wondering what the heck I'm doing there, lol.... fucked up shit. Working trash jobs just to go to college when it doesn't even pay off in the long run, it is sorta crazy. I guess I do it for social acceptance. If that is a non-issue to you in that regard, then yes, don't do it holmes.

You don't really strike me as the type who'd get much out of it.  The academic experience in college doesn't really matter much in the long run (other than maybe exposing you to stuff you'd like to either study more post-grad or pursue in a career), but the social experience and academic experience combined are what makes it such a great time for someone when they're young.  Since you won't get much of the former (no drinking, no fucking, no endo, no athletics) and you're a Muslim anyway, not much to bother with.

Also, having an associate's degree means almost nothing in this day and age.  Admittedly, a lot of people in health and medicine have one, but I doubt they're earning much more than someone without one (don't have stats, just going by people I know).

First think about what you're planning on doing in the future (career... long-run)... if you're satisfied with what you're doing now, and are okay with doing that for the rest of your life, then don't "waste" your money... but give it some thought.... personally I consider an education very valuable...

That's a good point.  If I'm already looking at it as a waste, then my subcoscious could ultimately lead me to failure if I attend school.

Yeah that's true about social acceptance.  For some reason, everyone tells me to go to school, no matter who I ask.  This forum, is the first time I've heard some people say I shouldn't go.

I hate the social acceptance thing that goes along with college.  I mean, even when I'm at my job, all the people there from staff, to clients, to family of clients, they all ask me about school.  And if I tell them I'm not going they make a long, long pause like I've just told them I'm an alien.  Then they start telling me to do something like go into anesthisia(?) which is like 6 years of school, damn near close to being a doctor!!!!!

They never get it, I hate school, always have thought it was pointless.  If you want to learn anything, you can learn it better outside of school where you can personalize your studies, rather then just learning it in the most general and boring way imaginable.

Yeah, the social experience of college doesn't mean a whole lot to me.  Yeah, it's possible I will meet people there and everything, but I don't feel like I should take classes and pay all that money just for the chance that I might meet people.

Associates degree might be nice, I guess, it would open a few doors for me, but not many.

Actually, for me personally, I guess I'm kind of satisfied with what I'm doing as far as right now, but I don't know if it will be enough in the long run.  It's kind of like a gamble, either way. I know you are into education, because that's one of the big reasons your family probably came to the West, so you would really be looked down upon in your family if you didn't take the oppurtunity to get an education.  Most all the Muslims I deal with, old or young, encourage me to go to school.

It's funny you said that thing about making mistakes.  I made a whole thread about that the other day.  I also think life is about making mistakes and choosing the best mistakes to make.  Is school the best mistake I could make though?

I took the stupid class.  I just paid $420.  I figure it's only 8 weeks of time wasted.  And if I work a little overtime I can make that money up in one week.  So anyway... whatever.

Going to school is never a mistake that you will regret. A degree shows an employer that you can see a project through, even if it isn't in the field you want to be in.

Great!  I have till June 6th to drop the class and still get a full refund.  That means I can go attend the first couple days of class and see what I think and still come and get a full refund.

man why would you ask a question you know the answer to?

and an education is not a waste of time or money, man i could never drop out of university, it is a new chapter in my life that i could never regret, even if the money isnt as good as i expect when i graduate.

university for me is a challenge and an opportunity to learn something, and i learn something new everyday, every new thing i learn gives me greater knowledge of how things in this world work.

but thats me, i want to learn and i feel like i'm having the time of my life, and holidays are so damn sweet when they come along... 3 Weeks!!!  8) ;D

like jrome said though, if you go into it with the attitude it's a waste of time and money, then you're probably going into the wrong course, or school isnt for you.

You don't have to go to school and pay thousands of dollars to learn something new.  You could just sit on wikipedia for free, or go to the library, or go search for whatever knowledge you want to find by active involvement in something.

Sitting in a classroom, your only going to recieve the knowledge in the most general and basic format, because they have to be able to teach a wide range of students, therefore you don't get any specialized knowledge.

Since you love Islam so much have you considered taking a course on religous studies?

I don't have to go to school to learn religious studies.  The current material I am studying on my own time, consists of everything from Buddism/Yoga, Russian orthodox Christianity, to Astrology and ofcourse Islam.  And I know I am getting more out of my personalized studies then I'd ever get in a classroom.

word. You gotta think about the future, its all good just making enough money to wild out every weekend cus you are young, but the older you get the more you will yearn to ball and be dissatisfied with the money that would have satisfied you when you were younger. Money does not bring happiness, but it is a tool that can be used to instigate happiness.

but on another note, if you can't complete your associates degree that's pretty pathetic.  I knew peeps that went to a community college, fail tests and still get A's in the class.  If you can't pass those courses than you're a seriously unmotivated motherfucker.

But seriously, you're absolutely fucking giddy at the fact that you can drop the course, you've already said you regretted your decision.  And then claiming that everything you need to know you can find in Wikipedia?  Jesus christ why in the fuck are you going to take the class?

You think you know everything, you think you've got it all figured out dont you brian?  Well a big part of going to college is being exposed and open to change and an alternative point of view.  Everyobdy needs to be out of their comfort zone and learn new things.

The way you talk it sounds like you'd prefer to be boarded up in a room and read the Quran all day rather than being out and learning things on your own.

I'd recommend some counseling dude.  I'm not even playin, I think it could do you a lot of good man.

its all bullshit, you pay all that fuckin money just to get a piece of paper.   You should be able to study on your own, then just take the test to prove you're qualified in whatever field.

Im three years deep in a B.A majorin in law....which is basically useless unless i go to 3 more years of law school afterwards,  alot of my credits are useless in real life.....iv taken philosophy, music, mythology, and language courses which are completely irrelevant to any career id actually follow.  Instead of wastin all this time and money in school to get useless credits that i "need" to graduate....i should just be able to study on my own, and then write the LSAT to prove i know my shit

Why don't we compare my background to yours, and see who is more open to alternative lifestyles?  I grew up in a suburbs in a city that was probably 99% white.  So, it's pretty obvious that somewhere along the way I got out of my comfort zone and learned some new things.

That's funny what you say about counseling because I actually believe counselors are useless, in fact, psychologist have the second highest suicide rate of all proffesions.  Also, the psychology they teach in school only deals with the outgrowth of the problem and never the root.  Then they load these people up on drugs to try to make them into zombies, only to create side effects that are even worse than the origional problem.

Look at Sigmund Frued, he broke man down to his animal nature, and treated man as if he was just a creature of his desires.

A real psychologist is somebody like James Redfield, or all the Sufi Islamic Mystics, or yoga teachers.  Those are real psychologists, because they appeal to man's higher nature, and teach man how to overcome his desires, control drama's, and connect with the energy that's provided by the Creator to all creations in the universe.

*psychologists don't prescribe drugs, they just talk to people, psychiatrists do *

about the school thing, i am 21, and for the last year i didn't go to school, i know what you mean about everyone telling you to go back, it gets a little annoying because nobody know what you are all about, and what you wanna do but everyone just says go back to school. i left because i had no clue what i wanted to do, and my motivation for work was gone. but after a year, man i just want to study, so im moving out to the city and going back to school, i dont really know what i want to do, but i wanna get my membranes working, i wanna take some cool sociology and english courses and take it from there, btw, you can wipe your ass with an associates, even a bachelors means almost nothing now, unless you get good internships and experience and build up a nice resume.
