Title: MTV News: Hottest MCs In The Game
Post by: Meho on July 24, 2007, 11:58:24 AM
Jim Jones
Rank: 10

Why He's Hot
The Dipset capo may not have raw skills like some of the other MCs on this list, but what he lacks in a traditional category like lyrical ability, he more than compensates with his overall passion and swagger for the game. Jimmy has come a long way from being Cam'ron's hypeman back in the day. Single-handedly, he launched the whole rock-star-in-the-'hood movement: From his skull-and-bones look down to his chained wallet, Jones has more clones on the block than an old zombie flick.

But it ain't just Jones' True Religion jeans that helped him make the cut. Check last year's Hustler's P.O.M.E. (Product of My Environment) and you'll find more than enough proof that Jimmy has fully come into his own as one of the top voices of the streets. From a vulnerable joint like "Emotionless" to the full-on rumble of "Reppin' Time," he's expanding his subject matter and developing more than ever as an artist.

But the main reason why he's hot shouldn't be much of a surprise, and it comes down to one word: "Baaaaallin'!" Jones' "We Fly High" ad-lib and the hoop-shot dance from the video became an unlikely pop-culture phenomenon. Just about anywhere you went — from Cali to Coney Island — you heard the song and saw someone doing the dance. Even the New York Giants adopted the move as a ritual after a big play, solidifying Jones' status as a true rap star.

Jimmy returned the love, putting together a Giants remix of the song, which became the first of a ton of remixes he's done in the past year. His phone blew up with calls from DJ Unk, Rich Boy and Game, making him one of the most-requested MCs. The calls kept coming as Jimmy went on tour with Jeezy in the spring, but soon setbacks and tragedy popped up when he went public with his feud with Cam'ron, and his close friend and Byrd Gang member Stack Bundles was murdered in June. With another close friend home from prison in Max B. and a Byrd Gang album on the way, hopefully things will improve for Jones.

Co-Signer: T.I.
"Jim got his swag together this year. He really popped himself off. He's [a hustler] like Jeezy — when people first started hearing about Jeezy, it wasn't for rapping. I think Jim gets the same ... that goes with street cred. Street cred and swagger. That's why I feel he should be high up on the list. I mean, he had a hit record: A no-brainer, an unadulterated hit record, not just something that some people liked and it got drilled into your head so much you got forced to like it. You gotta give credit when credit is due."

Blistering Ballistics
"The young and the restless live life reckless (Harlem!)/ House money on the necklace, the pigs want him arrested/ 'Cause I'm obsessed with the guns and the vests (I love them)/ 'Cause when you getting cake, the candles come with a death wish/ The rock star living (What else?), the hot cars and women (Lavish life)/ Let God forgive him, hope the cop cars don't get 'em (Squalie!)/ This is for them n---as that, at the club throwing stacks (Baalllin'!)/ It's 'Star Wars,' they threw two, I threw four back/ And I'm back, it's Mr. New York City/ My hat to the back, I stay flyer than a Frisbee" ("Reppin' Time")

Common
Rank: 9

Why He's Hot
Battle-tested. A regional pioneer. And time-weathered. Common's resume already reads like one of the most accomplished rappers of the past 10 years. But in 2005, the Windy City MC resurrected his career following the underwhelming Electric Circus by joining forces with Kanye West for Be, his sixth studio album, which not only featured Com's usual razor-sharp wit but also brought a much-welcomed return to the rapper's street-hardened sound, which had been missing since his earlier records.

Tracks like "Chi-City" and "The Food" brought out the best in the gifted lyricist, as he proved to be both boastful and sincere — satisfying his expanding fanbase, whether it's block huggers or those coffee-shop chicks — over West's neck-snapping drums and kicks. Be earned plenty of accolades, from classic ratings in rap mags to four Grammy nods, including Best Rap Album. Com even snagged his second gold record in the process, along with a Gap campaign and a few movie roles. His follow-up, the Kanye-helmed Finding Forever, drops July 31, and the first two tracks, "The Game" and "The People," are a good sign for any fans of the Nag Champa champ. Over Preemo's scratched chorus on "The Game," Com sounds hungrier than a young MJ gunning for his first Larry O'Brien trophy: "Punch lines are like jab pits to rappers/ Whose careers are now ashes/ It's too many slashes in his name/ Came in the game as gun clappers/ From weak rhymes to clothing lines to an actress."

The rest of the year should see Com guesting on other artists' records, and Finding Forever should bolster his credentials even further as tracks like the monster "Southside" become available to the masses. He's not as frivolous with material as other MCs, so there aren't many mixtapes to choose from. In fact, his albums rarely have many tracks — but what Common lacks in quantity he more than makes up for with a quality that only a few of his peers in the game — now and ever — could match.

Co-Signer: Ja Rule
"Common is like wine — he's getting better with time. He's getting better at what he does with the records, and he's starting to sell more records as well. His whole last album was crazy! I don't know if it's those beats, but he just keeps improving. He's a hot MC."

Blistering Ballistics
"The broads, the cards, the half moons, the stars/ I'm like Jeff Fort, the way I get behind bars/ Burn CDs with no regards for the stars/ Come to the crib with conflict diamonds and they ours/ Back in '94 they called me Chi-town's Nas/ Now them n---as know I'm one of Chi-town's gods/ We eating Joe, you still talking no carbs/ A conscious n---a with mack like Steve Jobs." ("Southside")

50 Cent
Rank: 8

Why He's Hot
Just a few weeks ago, a lot of people were calling 50 a hot mess, not a hot MC. He had put out two singles from his forthcoming album Curtis, "Fully Loaded Clip" and "Amusement Park" — as well as the leaked street track "Straight to the Bank" — to underwhelming feedback. 50 himself said he didn't like the reaction, so he regrouped and recorded eight new songs, causing Curtis to be delayed from June 26 to September 11. Then there was that performance at the BET Awards, where he walked through the crowd instead of rapping the first verse of "Amusement Park." And we're not even going to talk about the performance of the last three albums from his G-Unit label.

So why does 50 make our list despite all of this? Well, as we've found out over the years, you can never count out Curtis Jackson. He'll find a way to come out on top. As far as the 'hood goes, even the cats who were cursing 50's name a few weeks ago can't front with his new record, "I Get Money." It's the most rugged joint in the streets right now: a relentless loop of classic hip-hop lyrics by Audio Two, a grizzly bassline and believably brash lyrics said in a harmonic flow. Speaking of getting money, while a lot of rappers need ringtones and club dates to eat, 50 became millions and millions richer with the sale of Glaceau Vitamin Water. He owned a stake in the company and even had a flavor named after him.

While the Southside Queens, New York, native stayed in the forefront of his business, he also kept on top of battling. When Cam'ron tried to son him on New York radio station Hot 97, 50 responded with not just a dis record, but a low-budget video that went straight to YouTube. Others like Cam himself and Scott Storch followed the trend. When Killa Cam responded and dissed with his hilarious "Courtesy Curtis" campaign, 50 turned that into a marketing strategy for his album, hoping he'll be able to laugh straight to the bank again. Cam hasn't been heard from since he went back on YouTube threatening to get at 50 again on June 1 — that was in May.

And don't forget: 50 is still one of the biggest names out there — not just in rap, but in entertainment in general. Just about everything he does or says is a major headline — like having a topless Ciara fondle his bare muscles in her video. There aren't too many rappers these days who can draw crowds all over the world, let alone bring out Sue Storm herself — Jessica Alba — onstage with them (yes: the footage is all over the Net).

Co-Signer: Common
"50's definitely got his own style. His voice — I like that he's got some type of swagger and humor to what he does and he still rhymes raw. He has cleverness to what he does. He's what you call a good song maker too. Not only do you feel like 50 loves to rap, but you feel like this dude is making good songs. His hooks are catchy. For me, that was one of the things I had to develop. You could be a dope MC, [but] if your songs ain't coming out to the level that people want, they not gonna pay attention to you."

Blistering Ballistics
"I took quarter water, sold it in bottles for 2 bucks/ Coca-Cola came and bought it for billions, what the f---?/ Have a baby by me, baby, be a millionaire/ I write the check before the baby comes, who the f--- cares/ I'm stanky rich!" ("I Get Money")

Jay-Z
Rank: 7

Why He's Hot
He's laughing straight to the bank — oh, wait, that's one of the other big-name rappers who made the Forbes list of highest-paid entertainers! Still, the Big Homie continues to be the poster man for hip-hop moguling: Jay made $83 million last year alone according to Forbes, netting him the #9 spot on its list — one above Steven Spielberg! Yes, the numbers don't lie. Maybe that's why we didn't hear Jay jump into battle mode as passionately with Jim Jones and Cam'ron as he did in the past with Nas or even Mase; he feels the Harlem, New York, hot boys are not on his level artistically or financially.

Dis records like "Brooklyn High" and "Dig a Hole" left more of a sour taste in the mouths of fans than in the mouths of those he was aiming barbs at. (The records weren't devastatingly disrespectful.) The streets questioned how Jay could not only lyrically leave the Diplomats standing, but also leave the door open for Jim Jones to come back with a rebuttal and use Jay's vocals on his record. But Jay is in a way different place now; there's nothing else for him to prove. When you think of the biggest name in rap right now, there's not a performer out there who leapfrogs Jay. Your favorite rapper would love to be where he is.

His spot on this list is another victory lap for Hov — we've already crowned him the greatest MC of all time. He makes big hit records with the hottest chick in the game, who happens to be the same lady he's seen kissing in pictures from exotic island vacations. Despite the talk of how Kingdom Come didn't live up to the hype, if Jay said he was going to drop a new album today or tomorrow, you'd go buy it without having to hear a single song. That, my friends, is the epitome of being hot: when your name alone commands attention everywhere in the world.

Who else but Hov could have generated that much interest by releasing a hip-hop LP? On Kingdom Come, he rapped over a handful of Dr. Dre beats, sprinkled with a little Just Blaze, a last-minute pinch of Pharrell Williams and guest vocals from Chris Martin, Beyoncι, Ne-Yo and John Legend. When Hewlett-Packard, Budweiser, Cherry Coke, Verizon and GMC all wanted to throw millions of dollars his way before the album even came out, expectations for the biggest hip-hop album ever abounded. He started off right, too — with a world tour that promoted awareness of the world's water crisis, a jet-fueled U.S. tour that hit seven cities in 28 hours, and more than 600,000 units of Kingdom Come sold in its first week of release. The album has scanned over 2 million copies with just two singles, one of which — "Lost One" — strayed from many of Jay's club-friendly singles.

And while he may have sacrificed a few million more in sales by not watering down his music or lyrics, he made the album he wanted to make — an LP of grown-up topics and soundscapes that didn't pander to a teen-dance craze or some nonsensical here-today-gone-tomorrow catchphrase.

Co-Signer: Young Jeezy "I think the MC thing is more for the passion — you could make hot records and not be relevant, so you have to stay relevant. You take Ludacris, Jay-Z: They're relevant. They stay poppin'. To me that's what makes a great MC. But I respect the businessman aspect of it, too. To make a good record is cool, but we all know it ain't just about that anymore. I ain't saying it's a money thing, but you got to know where you're going, who you're making it for. You gotta make sure you're up to par. Jay-Z, dude got love for music. So it's like, when you one of the best at it, you might just feel like ain't nobody out there doin' it the right way, so he had to sneak back."

Blistering Ballistics
"Comin' up, though, we thought slingin' raw was the end-all be-all of being rich, didn't we?/ Little did I know, my mo' potent delivery would deliver me/ Kingpin of the ink pen, monster of the double entendre/ Coke is still my sponsor/ Heh, the cola, yeah Hova still gettin' it in with soda/ Diet, no sir, I ain't lose no weight/ Started from the crates, now I'm sittin' on a whole case/ Since they got you sittin' on that old case/ Our dreams is on hold like Tivo." Why He's Hot
It could have been a very cold winter for the Snowman in late 2006, but the ATL trap star continued his run as one of rap's true thriving forces. Everybody was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his Gangsta Grillz special-edition mixtape, I Am the Street Dream, but it just didn't bring the 'hood tremors that his groundbreaking Trap or Die had caused in 2006. To pile on, some people were saying that the double-platinum status of his Def Jam debut, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, was a fluke and that the kids were just hopping on the bandwagon of the hot new thing.

But Jeezy had the last laugh — "haaaaah, haaaaah!" — when The Inspiration debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart in December, selling more than 350,000 copies and almost doubling the first-week sales of 101. The project showed he still had the most swagger of any MC on the mic. (We'll probably never get tired of "That'ssss riiiiiight!" and "Yeaaahhhhh!") The great motivator was inspired by all the doubters who said he couldn't rap, stepping up his lyrics and range of material. "Go Getta" (featuring R. Kelly) boosted his radio play and became one of the most commercially successful hip-hop records this year, while tracks like "Hypnotize" made him arguably the most street-credible act on this list. Some say going gold is the new platinum — nah, Jeezy's numbers still topped a million in this climate of lackluster sales.

In the spring, he headlined a tour of 'round-the-way head-bussas (which featured Fat Joe, Lil Wayne, Rich Boy and Jim Jones) and introduced his new group, USDA, with Cold Summer. While they're far from household names, USDA members Slick Pulla and Blood Raw got good in the 'hood, riding alongside Jeezy on records like "White Girl" and "Corporate Thuggin'."

Meanwhile, Jeezy has continued to be one of the busiest guest collaborators in the game, obliging requests from Kanye West, Game, Ludacris and DJ Khaled.

Co-Signer: Fabolous
"I saw Jeezy and respected his talent from one of the first times I heard him. Certain people don't always [catch my ear from the beginning]. It takes some type of stamping or backing, or you might have to work a little harder. But when I heard Jeezy, I said, 'His style is different.' I felt his style and energy because it was so different from what was going on. I reached out to him to work on a song, and from there we've been airtight. [We've] always been homies. It's good to see him doing his thing; he's in his own lane, he wears his hat well. I'm rooting for him."

Blistering Ballistics
"I got the streets on lock, Atlanta on my back/ I do it for the 'hood, you got a problem with that?/ Real n---a, so this rap sh-- easy/ When I speak, these n---as believe me/ 'Cause b---h I'm Jeezy." — "Streets on Lock"

You don't have to be able to rap to become certified as one of the hottest MC's in the game by MTV. Just dressing like a queerbait and shouting one word is good enough.
I have never taken MTV's listings seriously.

Kanye West
Rank: 5

Why He's Hot
Exhibit one: his long reach and indomitable star power. Not too many acts on this list are famous or crafty enough as showmen to rip the stage at New Jersey's Giants Stadium with Swizz Beatz during the hip-hop mega-fest Summer Jam concert — and then turn around a few weeks later at the same venue and catch more wreck with the Police and John Mayer during the rock-heavy Live Earth concert.

Exhibit two: determination. Obviously talent has a lot to do with it, but Mr. West prides himself on being rap's most un-wack artist and isn't afraid to put in the work to be sure it stays that way. Kanye has admitted that last summer, when he appeared on the records "Impossible" (featuring Twista, Keyshia Cole and BJ) and Pharrell's "Number One," the lukewarm reaction to the songs wasn't quite what he bargained for. Then there was the infamous MTV Europe Music Awards incident (in which he threw a tantrum over losing the Best Video award) and all the backlash he was receiving on blogs. So there he was: a multiple Grammy winner, production genius (just ask Jay-Z) and self-professed fashion guru with no heat on him — at least not the kind of heat he wanted. Sure, he was performing for 60,000-70,000 people a night in stadiums across the world opening shows for U2 and the Rolling Stones, but even the Louis Vuitton Don knows that if the streets — and granted, he probably has the most diverse fanbase of anyone on this list — aren't screaming your name, you're only going to go so far.

So Kanye started the campaign for his forthcoming Graduation album from the ground up a few months ago. He jacked Rich Boy's "Throw Some D's" (an early contender for song of 2007) and made it his own by replacing the Alabama rapper's easy speak about vehicles with his own humorous take on breast augmentation. A straight-to-the-Net video followed and all of a sudden, his climate started warming up. After a few other underground offerings, Kanye's real turning point came in late spring when he dropped the first record from Graduation, "Can't Tell Me Nothing," a sharp-witted slugfest of punch lines ("I'm just saying how I feel man/ I ain't one of the Cosbys, I ain't go to Hillman") where once again he shows mic improvement and brings the everyman mentality into the mix. Who can't relate to the chorus where he dreams about getting his "money right"? 'Ye should have a bit more to spend on his clothes over the next few months — the remix to "Can't Tell Me Nothing" with Young Jeezy displays even slicker rhymes ("K. Slay-ed 'em") and more swag. His new single "Stronger" is becoming such a big summer anthem, it was even heard on a recent episode of "Entourage."

Kanye's final trump card is not that he's still shining as one of hip-hop's top producers (his work on Common's Finding Forever has been lauded as classic), but he's thrown himself in the ring with 50 Cent for a showdown at stores on September 11, when both their LPs drop. It's going to be tight, but with 'Ye playing Rocky Balboa to SoundScan killer 50 Cent's Clubber Lang, some are saying West may actually win in the first week.

Co-Signer: Game
"Top MCs? Kanye West. I think because he's a producer also, a lot of people discredit him for what he does. But he's dope time and time again. He creates hits for other people and for himself. It's not like he's a stingy producer and keeps all the hits for himself like other producers out there. But Kanye is dope. When I see him, I feel like I'm in the presence of a legend. When I look at artist that I f--- with, I look at it from a fan's standpoint. I really got a lot of respect for that dude. I hope people get the picture on his next album if they haven't already. I think his contribution has been catastrophic, I'm glad to coexist with a MC like that."

Andre 3000
Rank: 4

Why He's Hot
Brain trust member Sean Lee said it best: "Every verse is an instant event." Over the past year, Andre Benjamin hasn't been the most prolific MC by any means (he might have been vying for the #1 spot if we had more material to judge him on — we're that confident in his abilities), but as far as instantly grabbing your attention, stealing the show and plain old stunting with skills, 3000 has been the man. Just a couple of years ago, people were questioning whether Mr. Three Stacks would abandon rapping altogether in favor of singing. Last year, however, he went into MC mode on the "Idlewild" soundtrack and has been jamming ever since. All of a sudden, we're reminded exactly why he is a legend.

Dre's real shine over the past year has come from his guest appearances. His cameos have been as random and surprising as they are gripping and stylistic, blessing songs from newcomers like DJ Unk to fellow veterans such as UGK. Each rhyme feels as natural as a phone conversation with your best friend: his subject matter covers music downloading, meeting his dream girl at the altar and guys who wear white T-shirts that look like long nightgowns. Like another guy on our list, Jay-Z, Dre has already done everything musically there is to do for an MC. He and Big Boi have already been tapped as the fourth Greatest Hip-Hop Group of All-Time, and his half of Outkast's Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below has won Grammys, bountiful praise and spawned one of the most popular songs of the decade in "Hey Ya!" Still, as a fan, it's refreshing to know that there is still a guy or two from the golden era of the mid-1990s that, when focused, can give you goose bumps every time you hear him, and still can lyrically batter most of the competition.

Co-Signer: Jay-Z
"I hear the hunger. That's what happens for a minute, if you're doing something and doing it for so long, sometimes you get burned out. You get burned out from doing it at such a high level for so long, you have to let it go so you can miss it a little bit, and then you can come back to it. You could tell right now he has that hunger, and he sounds great."

The Game
Rank: 3

Why He's Hot
Look for plumes of smoke when Game's in the vicinity: chances are the Compton, California, native is somewhere nearby, bodying a track. Lyrically, he has stayed aggressive enough to continue to pester and defame the entire G-Unit by himself, and stave off any talk that he couldn't have a successful career without the backing of his former camp-mates. Game's mic draws a lot from his vast respect for and knowledge of hip-hop's rich history, and quite frankly, his mouth is unpredictable. He's maintained fearlessness and sometimes alluring recklessness on commercial releases such as "Wouldn't Get Far" and underground blasters like "Body Bags."

On the mixtape circuit, he has stayed omnipresent — like a new MC who was hungry to be deemed nice by the community — by releasing street CDs and DVDs. And so what if Doctor's Advocate didn't have a huge #1 single or sell as much as his timeless debut, the blockbuster Documentary? Game's second album was still a classic and solidified him as one of today's elite. Easily one of the top five hip-hop albums to drop in the past year, with The Documentary, the man who once called himself "the Hurricane" launched impressively tormenting narratives of torrential times in records like "Ol' English," "Doctor's Advocate" and "One Night," while "It's Okay (One Blood)" fractured concrete and eardrums alike. The song's remix was one of the biggest in history, with more than 20 artists wanting to be down with the event.

Game did disappoint the fans bigtime, though, with just one statement. For now, he's saying that he's not giving himself a chance to become a legend — that his next album will be his last. But he has been known to change his mind, so let's not hold him to his word on that one.

Co-Signer: Jim Jones
"[I first heard of him because] the homies from the city, they was like, 'You heard this kid Game? I think he's Eazy-E's son! He's spitting hard. He's riding that vibe.' I reached out to him, the feelings was mutual. He flew to New York, one of his first trips to NYC. I scooped him up. We been locked in ever since. I respect his hustle, his grind. Above all else, he knew what goal he had to achieve. [After he left G-Unit,] it was like when Ice Cube had to leave [N.W.A]. He was over on the East Coast for a while, got his mind together, he came back and slaughtered. [Game] absorbed the game and did what he had to do to execute it. He still popped off. Now he's about to retire, so he must have his paper together."

T.I.
Rank: 2

Why He's Hot
A two-time Grammy Award winner, T.I. is the most across-the-board star on the list: He's got headline-making rebelliousness, movie-star swagger, A-class street credibility. He's a female-friendly heartthrob, a burgeoning businessman and most importantly a stylistic lyricist who can nourish the intelligence of the thinking-man rap fanatic, but still be able to consistently deliver commercially viable 'hood hymns that could easily roll off the tongue of your child or grandmother.

Some things are impossible to front on, and for the King of the South, now is simply his time. Last year, the moon and the stars aligned at the same time the fans' interest piqued: T.I. could be seen in his Hollywood debut "ATL" in the same week his biggest-selling album to date, King (also the biggest-selling hip-hop album of 2006), hit stores and went gold within seven days. His visibility — due to constant shows and major singles, such as "Why You Wanna," "My Love" and the remix to "Top Back" — helped him ride the momentum all the way to the recently released T.I. vs. T.I.P. The album also went gold in its first week and became just the third hip-hop LP this year to debut at #1 on the Billboard albums chart, and was the first to stay at the perch for two consecutive weeks. Think he's not doing at least another 2 mil?

Not only did T.I. vs. T.I.P. show his willingness to grow outside his comfort zone (producers he's never worked with before, such as Wyclef Jean, replaced longtime collaborators such as DJ Toomp; the album was a concept where he raps both against and with himself), but it stunt-astically displayed his pull. He'll probably be the only MC in history to get Eminem, Jay-Z and Nelly to all appear on one project.

But maybe Tip's most admirable attribute this year was his ability to display fortitude through the tragic losses of both his best friend and daughter. He took some time off, then came back not just holding onto his career, but doing something a lot of rappers five albums deep have found almost impossible: remain current and at the forefront of the game. The fiery Atlanta representative's reign isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Look for him to get even bigger as this year progresses. There's the film "American Gangster" with Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe and Common coming November 2; more singles from T.I. vs. T.I.P.; and his label, Grand Hustle Records, has a slew of releases on the way, chief among them the debut from the number-one mixtape DJ (and T.I.'s own personal spinner), Drama.

Co-Signer: Lil Wayne
"I don't listen to rap. But who be spitting? In this era, Young Jeezy and T.I. for sure. I listen to they sh-- all day. Tip, to me, if it ain't me [at #1], it's Tip. Real talk: I listen to all Tip's music and I try to stay sharp. I don't even listen to it as a fan — which I am. I listen to Tip more as a scout or a competitor of music. I'm trying to see how sharp is he — and he's very sharp! If you think I'm great or whatever, it's because he's great."

Blistering Ballistics
T.I.: "You could beat a hundred cases, catch one and you f---ed."

T.I.P.: "But all these n---as speakin' out who wouldn't spoke befo'."
T.I.: "Don't take it personal, people wanna be close to folk/ What you think the televisions and the posters fo'?
T.I.P.: "Yeahhh man, I'm claustrophobic, though."
T.I.: "Well you need to see a doctor for it/ And I ain't jokin', you close Tip and you 'bout to blow it." ("Respect This Hustle")

Lil Wayne
Rank: 1

Why He's Hot
Lil Wayne has distanced himself from his peer group simply by embracing his love for rap with open arms — much like the way the lovably rotund Mabel Thomas used to lovingly squeeze her son Roger on "What's Happening!!" Last year MTV News unofficially stamped Weezy F. Baby as the hottest MC on the planet, but now we've pulled out all the bells and whistles! We had to: When the MTV News hip-hop brain trust started coming up with this competition, Wayne was #1 on just about everyone's list. He's undeniable to us, the fans and the rest of the rappers out there.

His volume of recent work has kept us on our toes. You never know if he's going to drop an official record or just throw some heat out to the streets for free, just because. Although he hasn't dropped a solo LP in two years, he put out the duet LP with his dad, Baby a.k.a Birdman, Like Father, Like Son, in October and still records practically every day, whether for his own projects or the many dozens of guest-appearance requests he tries to fulfill.

But we're not applauding the 24-year-old MC just for having created the largest body of work of any of his peers in the past year — it's the overwhelming quality of that quantity. The New Orleans native rarely turns down requests for cameos, so in the last year alone we've heard him with a mind-boggling array of performers, from Robin Thicke, Mya, Enrique Iglesias and Gym Class Heroes all the way to the heart of 'hood with Rick Ross, Ja Rule, Young Jeezy and even the Shop Boyz.

With all the verse-hustling he does, you'd think Wayne would be in danger of burning out, but as he told us himself, you don't have to worry about that if everything you put out is hot — and sounds totally different. Weezy's microphone assaults have been as diverse in attack formation as they have been lyrically striking. His flows have come in the form of everything from spoken-word street poetry ("Dying"), a reggae chat mixed with French patois (Swizz Beatz's "It's Me B----es" remix) or even halfway singing (his "Sky's the Limit" freestyle). Meanwhile, Wayne has been at his lyrical zenith with superlative wordplay that hearkens back to the days when fly MCs like Redman and Grand Puba were in abundance and metaphors used to fly on wax with regularity ("sticking to the script like java"). His lyrics include keep-you-on-your-toes subject matter that ranges from the effects of intoxication to sexually unabashed groupies; from kissing Baby to President Bush being America's #1 villain.

Co-Signer: Kanye West
"Everybody is going to start with Lil Wayne. When I heard there was a [hottest MCs] list, I said, 'You going to start with Wayne then work your way down.' He delivers so many verses. The amount of work he puts in! I sat with Wayne working on his album and was like, 'Do you go on vacations?' He said, 'Nah, this is what I do. I dedicate my life to this ... I think a lot of people don't take being a pop star or rap star serious enough. Because it could be easy, you do a couple of records then you chill out. Nah, let's not chill. Let's do what we can to make sure this art is alive and take advantage of the moment.' "

Blistering Ballistics
"I am the beast/ Feed me rappers or feed me beats/ I'm untamed, I need a leash/ I'm insane, I need a shrink/ I love brain, I need a leech/ Why complain on easy street?/ I don't even talk, I let the Visa speak/ And I like my Sprite Easter pink" ("We Takin' Over")

I had never heard the word "swagger" used so many times in 30 minutes until I watched the show today. It basically proves that in 2007, "swagger" is much more important than making good songs, albums, and music period. They even showed Jeezy saying something like "nowadays, it doesn't matter if you make good albums" or somethin...I was like wtf???

That is a collage of some of my favorite albums (some are not rap but quit trippin). You need to get off of your hip-hop elitism and let people listen to what they want.

if snoop and dirty were brought up in ever topic about how amazing they are, then your point would have made sence.

LOL list is out of line man... But i mean what can u expect when lyrics dont mean a thing anymore and people like anyone who has dumbed down and simple lyrics...No names needed to be said but the mainstream is bullshit and even if it is just mtv and noone really cares there is always those ignorant who will abide by it and figure its how it is...And theirs more ignorant easily convinced people then anything....I know a female thatll murder most of those on the mic lyrically...and swagger?! oh my god so now a days if you dress with hot "swagger" your eligble to be on the top 10 mcs in the game...and since you dont need that great lyrics and come up with great adlibs....people line up....its a joke but thats how it is and if u say hip hop isnt dead after hearing and watching this shit then your most likely the reason why it is...The fact that other sides of hip hop dont even get mention and how people only follow whats heard on the radio and on tv is the reason hip hop is dead...because noones listining to anything else and noone wants to listen to anything else besides who they feel is hot...and im not dissing anyone who feels wayne deserves the #1 spot for some people its just the certain taste of music that they go with....hip hops name and meaning is just being raped LOL...i can go on and on with this but my points been stated...at least part of it has...1
