Man....this song damn near makes me want to stop DJing before I even start.

This song is the biggest song of the summer, BY FAR, in the south. I was DJing a party a month ago...and I was playing whatev I was playing, and this girl comes up to me like "ey....when you gon turn it up??" and I'm like what u mean? She said "when you gonna play somethin live?" and I'm like everybody else is feelin this, what you talkin about? She said "You need to play that Soulja Boy!!" and I'm like man......whatev...so I played it, and everybody went wild. An hour later, I was playing PSA from Jay.....and this same exact girl came up to me mad, talkin about "why the fuck are you playin this wack shit??? People are startin to leave because you playin this shit!!!" and she was dead serious.

Yeah it really does get worst....and it's all because of radio. Growin up in L.A., I remember hearin radio rotations on a daily basis going like this....in 94, you could hear Snoop, Ice Cube, Slick Rick, 2Pac, Outkast, Run DMC, George Clinton, and Roger Troutman...all in the same hour, which could be any hour of the day. They'd play the hottest shit out...then play something old school, just so everything was exposed. Now, it's kids who don't realize that 90% of rap is sampled because they never heard the original version....and then they'll diss the original song, whether it was 80's rap or 70's soul, and say it's boring or sounds old...but then love the song that samples it.

Hell yeah! I've been tryin' to download every old school soul/funk I see, just so I can hear the original track before it's sampled and alotta times when I recognize the song being sampled, I'm like 'damn the original song is the shit', an people like those pretty boy floyds like a Soulja Boy, they be like, 'ew that shit's old and wack'.

THEY SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME, WHATCHU MEAN IT'S WACK???

Same shit here in NY, the Southern records get much more love than anything else. The last time I remember a NY-based joint getting serious attention was "We Fly High". That Soulja Boy song is getting crazy spins, even though it's tired as hell.

People always do bring those kinds of things up, and wonder how the older generations saw us.

From what I see...it was a whole lot different. Most of the 80's legends, and fans who grew up on 80's rap, only hated the early 90's rap and gangsta rap in particular because of it's content. Most of them would never say it was wack because the music was wack, because the music was much more developed in the 90's...and they couldn't call many of the top rappers wack, because they were great technically...but just had more negative content. However...you saw a LOT of collaborations between 80s and 90s rappers, regardless of coasts or styles of music...and even rappers who beefed in the early 90's ended up linking up later on in the decade.

Nowadays...older cats still respect the new cats who are good rappers and put out dope music. Even with heads like 50 and Lil Wayne, you'll find a few older cats who like their music. People like Lupe and Murs get love from every generation. However, most of the commercial rappers, with a bulk of them coming from the south right now, don't get anywhere near that same respect. You'll rarely hear older cats giving it up to Jeezy, Boosie, Soulja Boy, Jim Jones, Yung Joc, and many of those rappers who make strictly commercial music or thug music that has no serious content, and who aren't really good as rappers.

Looks like he's a big fan of "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" LP.
Dissing this guy or his product is as cowardice as hitting a man in a wheelchair(no homo).

What's with all these gay ass dances nowadays? Why aren't muthafuckas jookin like they used to in '93. Watch and take notes.

The Dance Tracks today are no different than lets say "Da Dip," "Tootise Roll" or "The Train" back in the early to mid 90s. That's just an easy way of getting exposure. But it's like someone else said earlier, old school cats were hating on the shit that "we" loved back in day. They didn't want to hear some lanky 18 year old cat talk about gang banging. Guess what they wanted to do? Have a damn good time. You have to remember that Hip Hop in the 80s was fun. People were dancing and it was the norm. It wasn't until it got serious in the 90s that people stopped dancing. So, this new generation of Hip Hop is more throw back and reminiscent of the 80s, in the fact that it's all about having fun. Dancing... whatever. Soulja Boy is 16, which means he was way too young for Snoop, Dre, Cube, hell even Outkast in their heyday. By the time he was at least 6 or 7, Pac, Biggie and Pun had already died. Cash Money had just become the biggest craze. So his influence probably started then. Can't blame him for emulating what he came up on. It's only natural.

its not 94' its almost 2008 (14 years later).  and actually i know lyrically tha song is shit and tha song is retarted but its actually kinda funny and catchy.  thas wats wrong wit da generation x hiphop heads, they cant let tha fact go that niggas is tryna make money (commercially), like tha pimp said Quit Hatin' Tha South.  if u like hyphy then I have no clue why ya'll dont fuck wit this shit.  i grew up on DeathRow/Ruthless/Biggie/Wu and every "real" hip hop artist u can think of but after a while being reminded about tha struggle and all that "positive uplifting" music gets boring (and i have 2 admit vice versa) but if hip hop has no dance then we loose a valuable part of tha culture, remember that next time u critisize tha music.

Production is better (not all) but its better than alot of tha shit back then, song structure is better (more 2 tha point of tha song).

How dare people talk shit about the South's lyrics but they big up early to mid 90s West Coast music. The East clowned us for the same thing then and all we did was cry about it. Now we're on the same tip? Funnystyle shit if you ask me. South Central Cartel was no more lyrical than Dem Franchise Boys. Rappin' 4-Tay was no more lyrical than Yung Joc etc. etc.

You make a point but i mean the beats were so smooth, so funky and so catchy.

These beats now like solja boy its drums and 3 notes on a bell not evry creative at all.

Most of the West Coast shit was sampled heavily. Hell, most of it wasn't even chopped up creatively.

LOL...you definitely don't get what I was saying.

I mentioned 94, only in response to what dude was asking about how the older generations felt about music. I DJ for house parties and things in the south...so it's no way that you can say that I "hate on" the south. They have the hottest club music by far, possibly in rap history. I could care less about the lyrics in a club song for the most part, unless they are something beyond trash, or unless I just can't agree with them at all...such as doin crack, doin anything homo, etc. etc.

The problem I have with Soulja Boy is that nothing abouti t is good to me. With "It's going down" "Lean wit it" "Whisper song" and some of the last few hits from the south...it's like yeah the lyrics are whatever...but he has a dope or catchy flow, the beat goes hard, it has energy, the hook is dope, etc. etc......but Soulja Boy has nothing to me but a dance and a catchy hook...and that's all he needed to make a major hit song. So no, I'm never "hating"...but it's just one of the few songs that I don't honor at all.

So overall....I don't even think the West cares much about the fact that the south's lyrics aren't "dope" or whatever. Some of us just have a problem with rappers that have NOTHING standout about them. If you don't have dope lyrics, then please come with a dope flow, personality, delivery, or whatever else. I think the South has some of the dopest rappers in the game...and on an overall scale, I'd say they have the best, because they have rappers who can make the best music period right now. At the same time, some of the rappers who come out of there and blow up are a LOT wacker than the average rapper in the south or anywhere else....and with that, it makes the up and coming rappers in the south feel as if they need NOTHING BUT a catchy hook and a dance to blow up, and they don't even try to get better. There is space for party and club music, just as there is for lyrical music.

Rappin' 4-Tay was no more lyrical than Yung Joc etc. etc.

Well truth is, the West coast is ridin with the south a WHOLE LOT MORE than the East rode with us. Everytime you go to a party in L.A., you'll hear more down south music than anything else, and afterwards, damn near every car ridin by will be bumpin somethin from the south. The only people who "hate" are the lyrical heads, or the ones who are just bitter. I don't know many people out here who just don't like anything from the south. Some people here might not like their club music, but they'll like a few artists from there.

And as far as lyrics only...I think the rappers we had came with much better flows and deliveries to their average lyrics, while the south brings more personality and catchiness to their average lyrics...so it's not much different. However, for both of us, the main rappers who will be remembered in the future brought a mixture of everything from lyrics to personality to overall image. Most people outside the West can only name 1-2 4-Tay songs, if that....and in 10-15 years, Franchise Boys will only be known for their 1-2 major songs, if that.

My post is aimed at the people in bold. I live out here in the West. Most of my homies dig that South shit. Most people I know dig that South shit. It's only here on Dubcc and various other forums that you really see cats diss the South (unless of course you're surrounded by Backpackers, who think everythings wack). Reality is though, people on here will downplay the South for their lyrics, but all the while they're bigging up W.C., Daz, etc. Thats the funny shit to me.

Yeah I feel you, I was just responding to whoever felt like that. To be honest, at least speaking for the blacks in L.A., the younger ones just seem to ride whatever radio tells them is hot. It's High Schoolers out here who love Soulja Boy, Joc, and Wayne, but think Ice Cube and Quik are wack...and some will think Outkast is wack, so it has nothing to do with coasts.

Oh no doubt about it that its the youngsters that truly like this music. Just like we were the youngsters who liked Cube, Snoop etc. But its the cats who were feeling their school of rap that think today's rap is wack.

how can hip-hop teach and be positive if we cant dance, how many "2-low" need 2 come back out (Scarface album "The world...") b4 we have anotha conspiracy in hiphop again.  There's alot of bullshittin artists out there and theres alot of REAL niggas out there rappin 2.  just cuz EVERYBODY say "these niggas aint real/they never served them deals" rhymes  dont mean that 99% of tha rappers didnt do shit at one point in they life, especially if you from a big city.  As far as lyrics and mainstream go, u gota look at it from a BUSINESS state of mind, its like why would u sell beef noodle water and everybody wants coke.  Its targeted 2 tha younger generation cuz we are tha ones who keep it alive, u cant b 50 rappin.  Niggas talk about lyrics lyrics lyrics wen half of that shit dont even matter, just like ALOT of 90's (so long ago) rappers werent really sayin shit on most of tha album but "my flow is hot like sauce /ima boss like god /bullshit talks and fall /while tha feds is on my balls" no point- its just how "real" u are. its tha same shit we talkin now just more lyrically inclined rather than "i got golds on my teeth /and nikes on my feet/ lean wit it rock wit it/ im all about my cheese".  It's a fact nowadays tha radio/p/etc. doesnt "kill" hiphop its tha fans, nobody else does.  if we all went out and brought every conscience lyrical positive gangbangin from tha past 90's sounded mc (which most of ya'll piss everynight in tha bed prayin 4) then it still wouldnt top tha sales of fuckin Hurricane Chris.  i aint tellin u who u should like (except 4 wen i drop and my beats/artists) cuz i could give a muthafuck, but if u so-called wana save "hiphop" then make ur own beats/songs and buy who u like, stop hatin on tha next nigga and gitcha own, fuck boys cry and run off at da mouth everysingle time and kings make somethin happin

This shit is mostly for the youngins who came up at a time when shit was really changin.  But I think it's wack when you have artists that have been in the game for decades straight bitin this sound to try and get a hit these days.  I think it's sad, and it usually doesn't work anyway.

And SGV, SCC was WAY more talented than Yung Joc or D4L.  You mentioned that Quad City DJ's song or Freaknasty being equivalent to these cats?  The parallel would be that they could be categorized as dance music ("Come on Ride the Train" and "Da Dip") shit throw in "Humpty Dance" as well.  But to me, that's where the parallel stops.  Half these cats don't even know what a goddamn flow is, any word that is more than 5 letters long is too big for their vocabulary.  Their verses are nothing but filler time between their ringtone chorus.

Don't get me twisted like I can't get down to this shit in the clubs, that's the time and place for it.  Nobody's tryin to get all introspective and shit - people wanna dance, they want that catchy shit that they can pick up on the first time through, etc.  I think where people get really fed up is when it seems like its only this type of music that is really being featured on radio / video outlets.  It got so bad that I switched to Satellite and the internet.  But in my opinion, that's why people get so heated about it cuz it's like it's the only option being forced on them.

R-Tistic - Being a DJ and all, of course you gotta cater to your crowd.  You gotta keep their ass on the floor, so I say play what they want, but sprinkle in some other shit just to expose them to a little somethin else every once in a while.

tha great hiphop debate is going nowhere, we're selling each otha bullshit (contriversy and murda).  nobody really wants 2 do anything else mainstream wise bcuz its less appealing, why put out an artist with a 10,000 album base rather than a 100,000 one, tha shit economically doesnt make sense.  When Nas dropped HipHop Is Dead he brought tha game 2 where no other MC has, not even Pac.  Shiit, we finally got some real niggas on CNN lol.  Tha shit burns me up wen people say negative comments about tha game, not everybody has tha same taste in hiphop so why should we stick it in a box and let tha sales decline.  Snap away, g-walk away, hustle away shit it dont matter, the kids are being marketed by niggas like Soulja Boy, tha Ying Yang Twins and Lil' Jon bcuz its raw energy and u can dance 2 it, u cant dance 2 "My Life" by Styles P.  - good song but it aint 4 everybody.  If starburst sells more than m&m's u gona stock up in tha starburst.  Thas wat companies are doin'.  nobodies tryna ruin tha game bcuz u cant, theres too many other artist out there.  It's just like tha hood just bcuz alot of niggas make it look ignorant doesnt mean everybody ignorant.  Wen i go 2 tha club i dont wana hear "The People" by Common or "Westside Slaughterhouse" 4 a throwback song.  Shit i cant even lie I wana crank dat new Soulja Boy junt lol.  It's fun and not 2 mention alot of bitches titties is gona b bouncin around tha room  8) :o ;D :D.

Jrome, I don't SCC was all that talented, especially lyrically. I liked some of their shit, but they never wowed me. Thats why I lump them with DFB and Joc and them. But nonetheless, what you have to remember is that me and you aren't the main consumer anymore. People our age (I'm assuming you're my age or older) have so much other shit to handle that music isn't a priority anymore. The main consumer is the youngsters. They like to hear Soulja Boy rap 4 bars, repeat, chant and then hit the chorus. They're about having a good time right now. They don't care about reciting lyrics, they care about getting down at the next party/club. It's a different time. Older cats look at it and laugh, just like our older heads laughed at us for sagging our pants and throwing up Westside cuz Cube and Pac did it.

me too. Although I'm from the 90s music generation, I actually like this song it really makes a great club song. I actually dig those songs from boosie, unk, etc. of course I dont expect something great lyrically or even beat-wise. I just want something to bounce to and I think they do it pretty well.

It's only a few songs I just can't get into AT ALL.....DJing this summer, I didn't mind playing "Wipe me down" "Ay bay bay" and some of those tracks. This here is one of the only tracks that people nearly had to force me to play at first...especially because people who know me and my style know that I don't play shit just because it's "popular" but not good.

This is how I see it...if I played this track before everybody knew what it was, and before they knew it was a dance to it, they'd nearly kick me out, boo me, and at the least, completely stop dancing. However, the dance is the only thing that makes some people care about this song....and the fact that it caught on makes it seem better than it is. It is a pure novelty song, and people who aren't around to see it in it's prime will never feel it or think it's dope. There are many songs from the 90's that are novelty songs in this way that you could NEVER play at a club anymore, and that's how I feel this one is. It's a fad song, which means that at it's peak, it's much "hotter" (not better) than everything else out....but when it burns out, nobody will ever want to hear it again. On the other hand, songs like Keyshia Cole "Let it go" will still be just as good in a few years, even though it's not the hottest track out right now.

HOLY FUCK LMAO

I was DJing a party (i live in florida) had California Love on......and girls were like wtf is this? play some good shit, throw on some Lip Gloss, and Souljah Boy....i got on the mic like stfu and kiss my ass.....but then i had to throw it on obviously =X omg I hate the way people don't even KNOW any music but this crunk shit and snap shit. Its like they didnt exist before the crunk scene happened...and now this Snap era is worse.

Yeah man, it really is gay as hell. It's bad, because for some people like me, especially older ones, it doesn't matter if it's from 1975, 95, or next week...if it's good, it's good. I have a few homegirls who are 22-23 like me, and they love the Soulja Boy madness and hate the older music that is dope. These kind of songs make me anticipate coming back to L.A. and being able to DJ for 25+ and 30+ parties, so I don't have to play the BS straight from off of the radio.

Most cats at parties now a days only want to hear what's hot. It's always been that way. There's clubs in L.A. that you can't throw on old tracks. People who are barely 18 or 19 are too young to really remember the Death Row era. So how can you expect them to live a song they may not have heard? It's very possible, especially if they don't live in California. I'm positive that most of the people at these parties you're DJing wouldn't consider themselves Hip Hop Heads, just people who like music they can dance to.

It always depends on the crowd. From what I see, at least speakin for blacks, most of the younger ones are familiar with whatever songs were major in their region, even if they are before their time. I didn't ever hear any NWA or Eazy-E songs when they came out, but I still heard them growing up...so there are some 16-17 year olds who still know "Ain't no fun" when it comes on, even though they were like 3-4 years old. There are some old songs that are classics in the south that most people in L.A. either never heard, or never really saw as a major song, and they still get reaction. Also, there are some crowds that you can drop certain music on that is brand new, and they might not know what it is, but they'll dance to it and vibe to it if it sounds like something they're familiar with. I was playin "Candy" at parties back in August and Sept. of 06, way before Snoop's album had dropped or leaked, and most West Coast people were on it like "Damn, what song is that??? That's hot!"

As far as new tracks go, I just think there are some songs that will appeal to people as soon as they hear them...and some songs take a while to grow on people..or to brainwash them into liking it. When I was first droppin "Let it go" from Keyshia, people hadn't heard it so they couldn't sing along, but they'd vibe to it because it sounded dope..and when it got on radio for a while, they all reacted because they were familiar with it.
