The question they are getting at is how do you know you won't like it. Just because you came up with hip hop doesn't mean you have to listen to every single song from it before you listen to any rock (of course this is all hypothetical since hip hop is as much rock and roll as punk or metal are). You came up with Christianity too. What if you took the same approach as you did with Islam and decided to read every single piece of Christian literature before you decided to study Islam? You'd still be reading pre potestant texts.
Here is something from "rock" that may be more indentifiable with your life than any hip hop song I've ever heard. For the sake of how long we've known each other on this forum give it a listen and tell me what you think. This isn't a joke and thin't a song making fun of you. It's a real song and a real artist that I think you might like.

Yeah I got all the Mars Volta and At The Drive-In albums. Seen Mars Volta live a handful of times too. John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers plays with them sometimes. They go great together even though Omar Rodriguez is a damn virtuoso on a guitar too.

Radiohead, I can't figure out if i would classify them as rock but they are damn good. I know they started out as an alternative rock group but they've branched off to doing like industrial, ambient, trippy music. Maybe thats what you would classify as alternative these days though.

see the problem here is who is saying it. Everyone knows your opinion on rock music and people that listen to rock music. And how you look down on anyone that listens to rock music. You stating that you don't like rock music isn't what makes you close-minded... however, the fact that you think people "act like they listen to rock music to sound open-minded" does make you close-minded... have you ever considered that maybe not everyone is like you? That maybe these people do actually like it? Yeah, I mostly bump hip-hop... but if I like the sound of something else, I'll bump that too... not because of what others think, but because I like it... I'm not really into rock music, but once in a while I'll hear a song that will catch my attention, and because I'm rather unfamiliar with the genre I'll ask someone else who it's by or what the name of the song is... usually it's some really popular song that everybody else knows of, and they look at me like I've been living under a rock... but the fact of the matter is, I liked it simply for the fact that I enjoyed the sound.
Shallow's example of studying Christianity/Islam fits perfectly in this discussion. You're a dumbfuck, plain and simple... your sarcastic "Okay I will force myself to like it so I can be accepted" is retarded and played out because that's not even the issue... but you decide to "act" stupid (I used quotations because I'm no longer sure whether it is an act or not). Your attitude of "I assume that people feel the need to like _______, so I'm going to act rebellious and say that I don't like it, and then let them know that I don't need to like it in order to be accepted by them". Yeah it's nothing like Nirvana, Stones, or Jimi. It's a lot closer to country or folk music. It's not so much the music of the song I like. It's the presentation of the character and the story.
You may like Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone, Rolling Stones - Satisfaction. Rollingstones Paint it Black. Most people like Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven upon first listen. You also might like Black Sabbath - Paranoid.
I love that Infinite quoted one line from you like you guys are in agreement but completely ignored your post aimed at him. The stupidity of what the Infinite character said about being close minded (I refuse to believe it's a real person responding with such stupidity) isn't not liking rock, it's the fact that he won't even consider trying it. Like he's afraid of liking it. For Infinite trying out rock songs and understanding them may mean he'll stop appreciating rap as much and that scares him. It woud be like picking up the Gospel and having an epiphany and all of a sudden it makes more sense to him than the Quran ever did. He enjoys being the white muslim who rejects everything white, and messing with that joy could be harmful. For the character of course. Treating Infinite as a real person would be absurd. It's a pretty new song and not every common. It's John Walker's Blues by Steve Earle (Copperhead Road, Devil's Right Hand). It came out a couple years ago. It's basically a song about a white american boy who is fed up with all the bullshit around him in the USA and finds truth in Islam.

The other thing with Peppers is you have to already have an appreciation for psychadelia. Illmatic is a bunch of stupid noise to someone that doesn't like hip hop, and it's nothing special to most people that only listen to modern day south rap. It's a matter of taste and every taste can be aquired, it's just a matter of whether you want to aquire it. There are many sounds I've never aquired and many I probaby never will, but there are always people that like those sounds and like them for good reasons.
And to whover said the Beatles were the N'Sync of the 60s; that's among the stupidest things I've ever heard. The Moknees maybe, but the Beatles turned music upside down and changed it forever. How albums are made, how sounds are discovered, how songs are crafted, how songwriters are respected as artists. The Beatles played major roles in chaning the world's view on all of that. Saying the Beatles were just the 60s N'Sync is like saying Rakim was just an 80s Lil' Bow Wow.

only thing I disagree with is sgt.pepper. I think it still sounds just as fresh and accessible. Songs like 'getting better', 'with a little help...' are still accessible as shit. The opening track and outro are fucking bangers. A day in the life is still gorgeous. Lovely rita's drums and piano bang to high heaven. Fixing a hole, mr.kite, and within without are kinda denser to get into but still very dope. Hell even LSD is a pretty accessible song.
When I bought Curtis Mayfield's 'superfly' the essay in the liner notes said 'superfly' was the black sgt.pepper. I can see that, probably the best way to put it.
yeah anyone who hasn't heard sgt.pepper....that's like not knowing Z from the alphabet you know? not just the record but the packaging and the cover art and all that, it's an amazing artistic achievement.

I still love the album don't get me wrong. I wasn't trying to say it was worn out. I still think Little Richard and Link Wray's Rumble are amazing. I just mean that Sgt. Peppers was damn near mind blowing when it came out. It just can't have the same effect on people now because people grow up already hearing the influences of Sgt. Peppers. Historically you can discover it and say "wow this is where that came from" but it's so hard to say "oh my God I can't believe my ears" the same way people would have said in in the mid 60s.
Also, Blinded By The Light was actually Springsteen's first single for Sony after he was signed in '72. It came out in '73. His manager owned his masters at the time and Springsteen didn't even know it was given to Manfred Mann. But he's usually good with covers. I've never heard of him not letting a fellow artist cover his work. Later on he fought with his manager and Sony to get his masters back.

Yeah, I thought it was a good idea and it was funny, but I think it could have been great. Another cool rock song I heard a couple days ago was called "Love Is Like Oxygen" by Sweet. It had a different type of sound, but it was pretty cool.

Yeah I recceomend starting out with Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde On Blonde which is my favorite from him.
If you like more of his folkier stuff his first four albums are also great.
Theres alot of gems in his Rare and Unreleased Bootleg Compilation too.
