New Area Code Proposed as 818 is Running Out
With Telephone Numbers Running Out, San Fernando Valley Customers Warned About Need for New Area Code (http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=local&id=5644171)

By Wendy Burch

SHERMAN OAKS, Sept. 7, 2007 (KABC-TV) - Some people living in the San Fernando Valley soon may not be able to say they live in the 818, as there's a proposal for a new area code.

State regulators and phone operators say the 818 is running out. They haven't decided what to do yet but there are two options.

One is to give all new numbers the 747 area code. The other option is to divide the 818 into half. In the latter option, Sherman Oaks would be the division line. The new area code would go from Sherman Oaks to Agoura Hills, give or take a little.

But they have not decided whether or not the new section would stay as an 818 area code or would change to 747. Officials say it is all to be determined.

State regulators say the need for new numbers in the San Fernando Valley is exploding, and they are rapidly running out of numbers. In fact, they expect the 818 to be completely depleted by late 2009.

Regulators do know that there is going to be some sort of fight over the area code change. Residents and business owners alike say it is a hassle to change their area code. Plus, the 818 has become a part of the cultural genre of the San Fernando Valley.

"Everyone's like, 'oh where are you from?', 'where are you from?' when you go out," says Kendall Clifford. "And I'm like Sherman Oaks. 'Oh 818, you're 818'. Okay."

"I mean you hear it in the media," says Briana Brotherson. "You hear it in songs, rappers are like 818, 310 . I mean, you hear it all the time."

Officials warn not to get too attached to your area codes because they are bound to change as the populations continue to grow. It's estimated that in California there are 13 million land lines but 27˝ million wireless lines, and that number is expected to keep growing.

818 is blowin up!
