you know i hate to be the one to really say it like that but the truth is that bishop and omar cruz had their chance and blew it. now im not saying that these dudes are wack because i actually think they are decent rappers that have made some cool songs here and there. but the truth is that both of these guys are out there promoting their new singles without no support from the label which means that not even the label is behind them anymore.
lets start with bishop. this guy missed the boat completely more then any of the other guys like omar, glasses, spider, etc. he had his chance to make his move when he released that video with dre in the studio, but just couldn't capitalize on it. he had a nice little buzz going but just couldn't deliver the music to match that buzz. now, hes got his people sending out press releases begging people to request his single on the radio. its over for bishop and the reformation is not coming out. the fact that the label isn't pushing him at all right now or that dre hasn't even mentioned bishops name in any of these recent articles he has done just showed me that dre is done with bishop. but that's dre. he opens the door for you and gives you the chance to make shit happen. if you dont make shit happen, then its on to the next nigga. right now it's all about dre, 50 cent, eminem and game. it sucks but that is all it seems jimmy iovine cares about. bishop has completely lost any buzz he had but he has no one else to blame but himself and management. if him and his management was smart, he would grab his album and sign a distribution deal with koch and put that shit out now while he still has a few people checking for him.
as far as omar cruz. well the whole mexican rapper thing is over. yeah he is a good rapper for being mexican, but that is pretty much as far as it goes. the mixtape game is over now and i noticed that once that ended, the little buzz that he did have died also. he has done numerous articles, interviews, etc in big magazines, but the music just hasn't been good enough to sustain any type of buzz outside of l.a. Omar and his management are also better off going to Koch and doing the same thing as Bishop now while you still have some heads checking for you.
reading that j.r. rotem interview on thaformula really made me realize the difference between good and bad management. j.r. was smart to get a real professional manager on his team. a lot of these dudes mistakes is having their homies as their manager or having your mom as your manager. in 2007 that shit aint cutting it cousin.
Here are a few things that pretty much put the nail on the coffin for bishop, omar, spider loc, glasses, etc. in my eyes:
1) Crooked I is the only mc that has really opened the eyes of people in other coasts. His hip hop weekly shit has comepletely smashed every other up and coming L.A. rappers buzz. he is the one right now in the west that people are checking for in L.A. and outside of L.A.
its funny to me actually because i really never thought that crooked would get his props. i honestly thought it would be bishop, glasses, omar, or spider loc that would start to blow outside of L.A. due to the fact that they all had a label with money behind them. but it just goes to show you that people respect real lyrical talent. crooked I is the best mc in the west and after listening to the hip hop weekly shit, you cannot dispute it. will he blow the fuck up? probably not. but what i do know is that he has made himself the frontrunner without the help of dre, busta, interscope, geffen, "being a mexican rapper", latin rap conference, aftermath records, etc. He has killed every other west coast rappers buzz by using his MUSIC and the skill and talent that he was born with and that's how it used to be back in the day and that's how it should be now. fuck a gimmick!
2) this one here really showed me what people outside of los angeles think. if you look at the new xxl issue cover for "the leaders of the new school", the only los angeles rapper on the cover is crooked I. There is no bishop, no omar cruz, no glasses, no spider loc, etc. why wasn't bishop on that cover if Dre & Aftermath are really behind him and if his album is really supposed to drop soon. you would think that they would pull some strings to get him on the cover. why wasn't omar on the cover if geffen really feels they got a winner on their hands and why wasn't bishops and omar's management not made aware of this cover and try to get up in there even if they had to pay for it. crooked I was chosen because he has built a buzz that has crossed over to other regions and it continues to grow. talent, not money got him on that cover. honestly, i dont think crooked will ever really blow up, but he is the best thing the west has at the moment and you have to respect what he has done without a big machine or big name producers and artsits behind him.
In closing your honor, I'm not saying that bishop and omar are wack. they are decent mc's, but the truth is they are just your average mc when it's all said and done. they have yet to figure out how to make a hit record or get any type of respect from the other regions. add that to the fact that these guys have terrible management and all that together equals to a trip to koch records.
CROOKED I IS THE MAN RIGHT NOW AND I REALLY HOPE HE AND HIS MANAGEMENT DON'T FUCK THIS UP BECAUSE ONE WRONG MOVE AND ITS A WRAP!

please.........bishop and omar cruz '60 seconds' has barely even begun.....outside of the internet their still relatively unknown.....in the case of omar cruz most heads out here in LA just got hip to him during power house this past summer........

Simply put, Crooked has had his chance for 10 years. Getting on the XXL Mag for this feature is dope, but it only makes sense. Everyone in there has made noise for a while. Boosie been grinding the scene since he was a kid on C Loc's label. Now he has one of the summer's biggest singles under his belt (Wipe Me Down). Lupe Fiasco was on a Kanye single and had a good response with his single "Kick, Push." Rich Boy had a cool buzz with that "Get To Poppin'" at least a year before "Throw Some D's" dropped. "Throw Some D's" happens to be one of the bigger singles on 06 (even into 07). Saigon is much like a Crooked I in the sense that he's been waiting for a minute to get this album out. But he was the next dude in NY before Pap, before Joell, before Tru Life etc. So he (like Crooked) are what I like to call Grandfather accounts. They've been around so long that they just come with the package. As we move on, Plies is on a huge single with "Shawty" and is getting a lot of love from other Southern artists. It makes sense for him to be there. Gorilla Zoe is getting a good buzz with the "Hood Nigga" single. Young Dro had a hit with "Shoulder Lean." Joell put out that Brick album with features from Akon, Styles P and Big Daddy Kane. On top of that, he had a good buzz with that Jadakiss and Saigon remix of "Hip Hop." Papoose falls under the same category of Saigon and Crooked I. They've been doing it so long that have to be included.
Bishop and Omar aren't there yet. They haven't put out albums yet. They haven't put out nationally distributed singles. They don't have video's (whether featured or their own) on rotation on MTV/BET. All of the guys above have done that. Most of them already are established with nationally recognized singles. Let Bishop and Omar get to the point of when their albums are dropping, then make this topic.

He got buzz cuz he grinded hard enough BEFORE he got signed to get love from all kinds of emcees from all over.
Crooked has had 3 major deals (Noo Trye/Virgin, Death Row & Treacherous/Universal) and nothing has panned out for him. Crooked was the only choice from the West for this article. What other artist is up and coming and has had any singles released nationally (be it via radio or video)? Nobody. Even though that happened years ago, he's the only option cuz Omar and Bishop and barely getting to that point NOW. "Hang with My Doggs" and "Feel On It" have barely even been released to radio. They're just buzz singles, as opposed to official album singles.
And I actually like Crooked I much more than I do Bishop. But its absurd to say Bishop and Omar's time is over, when they haven't even had the chance yet. Hell, we've gave Crooked I 10 years, so don't short change Bishop and Omar after barely a year or so.

I agree with the fact that Crooked has the biggest buzz out of the west at the moment and its cool to see how he built it without a machine behind him. But its way to early to count out any of the other artists...

Not to mention BYI Entertainment has been doing it big as an independent label. If you missed the interview with Eddie and Lulu, you should have learned that getting signed to a major is over. Artist are now required to pick up the pieces and make a name for themselves. The labels ain't gonna do that anymore.
Crooked's only chance of making it big (now) would be to go independent. And I think it's a trend that all artists are making their own record labels and getting distribution from cheaper/wiser markets than dreaming for Interscope, Arista, Universal or Warner Bros. The big labels are only interested in money. The smaller/independent labels are after talent. Put them together: You get a hot selling artist.
That's how the game works now.

i feel the same way about so much shit that gets said in here....i always see heads in here mention people like glasses malone, tri star, (heck, even ya boy) like their all the rage out here in LA, (on the radio, in the clubs, on the streets and in the mom n pops) and frankly, that just really aint the case........most of my homies have no idea who most of the constantly talked about up n comers in this forum are.......yeah they know crooked, but mainly cuz of his more known dpg/death row era stuff (think of his verse on kurupts 'streetz is a mutha or the dogg pound 2000 death row album).....believe me, omar cruz and bishop have a much, much ,MUCH bigger buzz right now, because, well, they get a lil' love on power 106 (they were bumping that power house anthem for a minute and i heard bishop a few times here n' there) where as i can deffinately not say the same for crooked I..........am i saying dude is wack? HELL NO! he is a beast on the mic, i actually had the pleasure to see him bust a rediulous freestyle at the wake up show anniversary a couple years back to nothing but a beat box.....it was insane, the crowd went nuts......but what the thread starter is saying is just flat out not true.....i wish all these 'new west ' artists the best, so dont get it twisted, but the funny thing is, fools in here are all up on cats like technic and glasses(who both got skill but little to no following) andyet know nothing about sick jack and psycho realm (who sell out the house of blues consistantly).........LA underground hip hop goes far beyond what gets said up in here.....there's a whole scene fools aint up on

Truth be told the west has not been been putting out crazy new styles like they used to. The Bay came pretty hard with that hyphy shit, i give them credit for that, but it didnt blow up too big. And southern Cali is a god damn disgrace at the moment.........

So now I wonder if whether rap will end up like Reggaeton.

to compare reggaton to HIP HOP (not chicano rap, urban mainstream, snap music, hyphy, etc.) is rediculou, your talking about a music form that became popular a couple years ago, where as real hip hop started in the bronx in the 70's......you mind as well then compare hip hop to freestyle from the 80's (remember stevie b and debbie deb?).....i hope that what most people consider chicano rap does die, because its insulting and a backwards representation of my culture (same could be said for reggaton, but that applies more to puerto ricans)......i hate that fucken label with a passion.....sick jack, sinful, omar cruz, big pun (rip)-those are latinos who make hip hop, their MC's, not chicano rappers or whatever the fuck label people place on them......lil rob, capone e, down, etc, etc......chicano rappers....u already know how i feel about your oppinion on the subject so why be redundent, im done.......

First of all, Crooked I was on Death Row for like 5 years, meaning theres no fuckin way his album will see the light of day, we all know this, hes been loyal enough to suge but obviously had enough and is now goin the independent route, I dont know how u cant respect him for that
Second of all, Bishop and Omar are backed by major labels, I mean come on, Bishops on fuckin Aftermath Records for cryin out loud, what more can you get for a westcoast rapper than a big budget label with the GOAT in hip hop production......The fact that Crooked has created more buzz independently than any of these dudes on major labels proves his talent far surpasses any of these guys.....Im not sayin Bishop and Omar are not talented, I think Bishop is a great lyricist, but Crooked I is even better lyrically and has more presence and swagger behind the mic.....

What I just posted are straight up facts, Im not a fuckin dickryder like most of these fools postin on this board, I keep it 100% and tell it like it is.....I love Bishop Lamont but lets be honest, Crooked just has better skills behind the mic, and thats what keepin people checkin up on him every week, and Im talkin bout people all over the world, not just the westcoast.....I cant say that Bishop has completely lost his chance, that part I dont agree with, cuz just for the fact that he is on Aftermath and will have production by Dre alone will get people to buy his cd, but you cant sit there and act like hes way better than Crooked.....Just cuz hes your favorite rapper DOES NOT mean that hes necessarily the best rapper......My favorite rapper is 2pac, but we all know 2pac wasnt the best lyricist and didnt have the most talent when it came to mic skills.....But that doesnt change the fact that hes my favorite rapper, all Im tryin to say is, Be a fan but dont be a fuckin dickryder.....

What I just posted are straight up facts, Im not a fuckin dickryder like most of these fools postin on this board, I keep it 100% and tell it like it is.....I love Bishop Lamont but lets be honest, Crooked just has better skills behind the mic, and thats what keepin people checkin up on him every week, and Im talkin bout people all over the world, not just the westcoast.....I cant say that Bishop has completely lost his chance, that part I dont agree with, cuz just for the fact that he is on Aftermath and will have production by Dre alone will get people to buy his cd, but you cant sit there and act like hes way better than Crooked.....Just cuz hes your favorite rapper DOES NOT mean that hes necessarily the best rapper......My favorite rapper is 2pac, but we all know 2pac wasnt the best lyricist and didnt have the most talent when it came to mic skills.....But that doesnt change the fact that hes my favorite rapper, all Im tryin to say is, Be a fan but dont be a fuckin dickryder.....

I know at least a good 30+ people who are fully aware of Omar and they're not even big into Hip Hop. Those same people have never heard of Crooked I (I know cuz I've tried putting them on to him).

My sentiments exactly. Today, while my sis and I went to grab some chow at BJ's Restaurants, she told me about Reggaeton being a dead music style.
So now I wonder if whether rap will end up like Reggaeton.
And to Chuck Knoxxx - this includes Chicano Rap (Remember the Curse?) - will all subgenres of rap sink along with mainstream?
to compare reggaton to HIP HOP (not chicano rap, urban mainstream, snap music, hyphy, etc.) is rediculou, your talking about a music form that became popular a couple years ago, where as real hip hop started in the bronx in the 70's......you mind as well then compare hip hop to freestyle from the 80's (remember stevie b and debbie deb?).....i hope that what most people consider chicano rap does die, because its insulting and a backwards representation of my culture (same could be said for reggaton, but that applies more to puerto ricans)......i hate that fucken label with a passion.....sick jack, sinful, omar cruz, big pun (rip)-those are latinos who make hip hop, their MC's, not chicano rappers or whatever the fuck label people place on them......lil rob, capone e, down, etc, etc......chicano rappers....u already know how i feel about your oppinion on the subject so why be redundent, im done.......
dude im Latin too and i agree with you 100%. Im old school, i like rap music period! i fucken hate labels like the so called CHICANO RAP. As a hip hop fan(and i have been since the 80s) i think its garbage. And second it gives latins a horrible image.
And i agree u cant compare hip hop to reggaeton. Hip Hop is more complex, reggaeton is simple ass music. Nearly all reggaeton songs have the same drum pattern. It will be gone in a year or two and Ricans will have another style of music.

Also, another thing, Dre offered Crooked a record deal but Crooked denied it, he was fed up with industry politics and thus decided to do it the independent way.....
it was my understanding that when Crook left Virgin Records in 1998, he & Big C-Style were shopping labels together and C-Style took him up to see Dre and they gave him a demo (one of the tracks was DJ's & MC's) and Dre was impressed and told Crook that he'd love to have him on Aftermath but that he was in the process of working on Eminem's debut album... he told Crook that if he could wait 6-9 months then he'd be able to put Crook on... but Crook couldn't wait that long because he had mouths to feed at home, so C-Style took him to Dogg Pound and from there it was on.

L.A. is such a big place. It's pretty hard to gauge the buzz of a rapper just based on whether the people that you know in your circles know of these artists or don't. I am certain that if you go to different parts of the city, you will have people that know or don't know of all the artists named.

True!!! Crooked I should have a much more stronger buzz then bishop & omar combined. Crooked I has been around for a long time now!!! Bishop & Omar have only been around for like 2 or 3 years & there buzz is strong as crooked I buzz makes no sense. All 3 artist are good artist & they all rep the west real strong.

All can benefit by getting out to every part of the city.... do appearances at local stores (the one's that are left)... having cd's handed out at the High Schools... posters at the bus stops or major street crossways... get a big map of L.A. county and target a different part every week or so...

I have seen them at diffrent spot's thru out L.A so they defently doing what it takes. I think they are all 1 hit away from blowing up.
