Title: Pharoahe Monch - The sun will rise
Post by: Jome on May 01, 2002, 09:06:26 AM
Pharoahe Monch has a hit on his hands via his collaboration with the LOX's Styles, "The Life," and is ready to smack the masses with a barrage of other bangers as soon as his new LP, The Sun Will Rise, comes out. The Queens MC said he's not sure exactly when that will be, however ? his label Rawkus is still working out the kinks with MCA on a distribution deal.

"Oh my god, it's crazy," he said of the album. "It's gonna breathe a breath of fresh air into hip-hop. My mission is for people to be like, 'OK, he's not afraid. You can tell, he's having fun.' I love an album where you can tell, like 'This n----- had a ball in the studio.' [The music is] hardcore. It ain't thug hardcore, but it's old school hardcore, in the sense of a n----- rhyming over some hot ass, hard sh--."

Monch said Rockwilder, the Megahertz and DJ Scratch are among the producers on the LP's roster, and he's eyeing the Roots' Black Thought to appear on a song. Don't expect Thought to rhyme, though ? Monch wants the MC to sing a chorus and he's hoping to get Raphael Saadiq and Jaguar Wright to do the same. Monch also disclosed that he'll be the only one kicking lyrics.

"Right now I'm trying to hold it down by myself purposely because there were so many guests on the last one," he explained.

The small number of cameos isn't the only thing that's going to differentiate his second solo effort from his debut. Holding true to its title, The Sun Will Rise will have a much lighter mood. "I feel that Internal Affairs was murky and I needed to get some evil stories and some aggression out," he said. "This album is the repercussions and the aftermath of me airing all these things out. It's not as vulgar, there are not as many curses. It's mad spiritual, it's sexy, but at the same time it's motivational as well. Hopefully when people hear it they'll be like 'It's cool to be hardcore, it's cool to party, it's cool to cry.' "

People have been feeling Monch's evocative hook on "The Life." He sings, "My life is all I have/ My rhymes, my pen, my pad/ And I done made it through the struggle/ Don't judge me," and Styles raps a musical biography. That track will appear on Rawkus' upcoming Soundbombing 3 compilation.

"Actually, we first did the song for ESPN, for a show called 'The Life,' " he explained. "They asked me to do a chorus. An artist named Tribecca laid down some verses along the lines of sports and the chorus was altered from that. The original chorus was, 'My life is all I have, my skills, my hops, my jabs.' People loved the chorus so much, even though it was on some sports type of vibe, we figured we'd swing the chorus around for a broader concept and get somebody who could put some feeling on another vibe. We all thought the LOX was the clique to [work] with on that level."

Monch said he chose not to rhyme on the song as a way to experiment and raise eyebrows.

"I love to stay unpredictable," he said. "Just to have the people ask the question, 'Why didn't he rhyme on it?' I thought it would be dope for the first time, get on a joint and just do a chorus that I was singing on. Throw a curve ball.

"We're talking about doing the remix now," he added. "I might spit on it. Everybody wants me to spit on it, but I might not. That would be more shocking. I wrote the verse already ? it's sick."

Pharoahes new album should be doper than Daz on crack.
What yall think about this cat?
Personally I think he's the best lyricist in the game now.
Miles better than Nas, and even topping Ras Kass's crazy lyrics.

Also, he has a pretty unique flow, changing pace all the time, and sometimes even singing the lyrics.
Can't wait to hear him on a Rockwilder-beat.

Definatly anticipating this! He's got mad talent, great lyracist, & a DOPE flow. This upcoming album sounds like it has some tight guests too. I also can't wait to cop that Soundbombing 3 compilation.

Well.. the only Pharoahe Monch track I've ever heard (at least the only one I can remember to have heard) is "Fuck You" off the Training Day soundtrack.. but I liked that one... dope lyrics, dope beat, dope song... but I'll try to get more into him, which songs would you recommend for starters ?

Pharoahe Monch is tight, I'll definitly be copping this. Internal Affairs was one of my favourite albums of recent years.

The "Fuck you" track was dope, but he's been even better than this, you should definately check out these:

Last Dayz - Amazing beat from Adam F, and sick lyrics. Makes you wonder why this cat aint getting more recognition.

Oh No - With Nate/Mos Def, you probably heard it.

No mercy feat. M.O.P. - Sick Alchemist beat, and they all rip it.

Simon says (remix) - This was his biggest hit, and the remix got Meth/Red & Busta. Monster beat too.

Yall know the name ft. Xzibit - Dope beat, and 2 of the best MC's in the game.

My life ft. Styles - Dope shit, even if Pharoahe only is on the chorus.

Right here remix ft. Xzibit - Nuff said

I pledge Allegiance ft. Nate Dogg - Dope Mel Man beat, and one of the best tracks on Nate Doggs album.

Murda 1 case ft. DJ Quik - Not yet out, but Pharoahe rips it big time, with a unforgetable verse.

Dub plate ft. Wyclef & Kenny Rogers (!!!) - Dope beat, a catchy chorus, and sick lyrics.

Dirty Decibels - dope shit too.

Madden 2002 theme - Damn, I wish this was longer than 1.18, but it's sweet though.

BTW. I'm gonna make a BEST OF cd with Pharoahe, that's gonna be dope as hell

i think he's doper than Ras Kass. Altho Ras Kass has too much 'white people are evil' type shit for me to really get into him. Pharoahe is definitley slept on though, and has some real nice tracks.

"MCs just come on down, you're the next contestant on catch a beat down!"

np
Only 3.5 for Last Dayz?? lol, that's a straight 5 in my book.
I think you were a bit harsh on the scores, but it'll probably grow on you.

Just downloaded a bootleg with 20 tracks on it, great album.  That track My Life is incredible.  Pharoahe's gonna revolutionize hiphop one day, he can flow like no other.

The tracks have grown on me... I now consider "No Mercy" & "Simon Says" classic. Straight 5/5's.

I think you can compare Pharoahe and Ras as MC's, they're quite similar but personally i'd choose Ras over Pharoahe, but it's a very close call. But Nas & Pharoahe, I think they have totally different styles which I find uncomparable, but each to they own.

Just a quick Q, does anyone know if there's an explicit video version for "Fuck You"? I have the "Training Day" DVD and the video's included but it's the edited version ("Got You"), so i'm thinking there isn't one, can anyone confirm this?

that's how I feel.. He's one of those guys, that have solid lyrics, but an unbelievable flow!  Him, King T, Mc Ren, R.B.X., E.A.Ski all making livings off having crazy flow that makes them sound hard as hell.

Fuck you unedited is available on mIRC.
Unsurprisingly. Everything is on mIRC.

And to those that think Ras would kill Pharoahe: ahahahaha
Ras would only spit some professor shit that no-one could understand.

But I don't mind since it such a good topic.
I haven't heard anything else since the thread was made, so it may take quiet some more time.
