Bishop Lamont Releases Dr. Dre-Prod. 1st Single - July 2, 2008 By : Eddie
It's been a long time coming, but the wait is finally over! Bishop Lamont's first official single from "The Reformation" is called "Grow Up," produced by none other than Dr. Dre! The single will premiere on Power 106 & K-Day TONIGHT throughout the night, so be on the look out for it if you're in the LA area.
It won't be long before the track hits the internet, and you better believe Dubcnn will have it for you first. Holla!

Eddie, you were saying that it's not a "In Da Club" type record......did you mean it's not gonna be big like that in the clubs, or it's just a westcoast/summerish sound that we're really gonna dig, but the mainstream won't do much with it, etc?

You're absolutely right. If we have to hear a radio rip instead of the cdq 1st, that's fine, as long as we can hear it......but a cell phone rip from the radio won't do it at all.

This is big because this Bishop Lamont project has (supposedly) been Dre's baby along with Detox. I'm pretty sure that we're gonna hear the Detox "sound" because Bishop's shit was supposed to come after Detox, not before. Hopefully Dre didn't hold back with unleashing the heat.

I actually like this beat better then the imagine beat...
The imagine beat was more "musical" sounding while this is more "laydback" sounding with the acoustic guitar (thing) in it. Sounds more playable on the radio... Basically what it is...

Yup, it's ONLY a good song. Such a long time of waitin' and what we get is a good song. I mean, I guarantee that most of people was expectin' something more than good song. Beat is average, "Imagine" is much better than this and Bishop's flow is :sleep:

So, after all the years, we was waitin for this? Iīm kinda disaponted.
The song is far away from beign garbage, but, like the most, I was expecting something that make me saying "DAMN :o, that is it". The beat is not bad, definitely got a nice laid-back vibe. The guitar sounds really nice, also like the drums, but after all, itīs just a simple loop-beat. Damn Dre, why just this simple loop-shit? And again Bishop sounds not really hungry, I mean itīs your first single boy. He should flow his ass off on this, even if the beat not permits much. But what I really like is the lyrical content, too bad that Bishop just rap with his lazy flow :-\ Donīt really see this as an first single, itīs more like a street-single. But who knows?

Okay. First I'm gonna say that I'm surprised this actually came out, I was sure to get another exuse from Aftermath camp.
- the beat: love the drums, nice guitar, sounds simillar to Imagine but more laid back and Westcoast sounding, summer vibe. And I actually hear a bassline, can't really tell because of the quality.
- Bishop: I don't see why everybody is saying he had the lazy flow, I think that his flow was on point. He just has a more laid back flow because it's not an agressive or club record.
- subject matter: great, quite refreshing actually
So, in the end, it's definetly not A single everyone was expecting but I think that this will probably end up being a street single, like Westside Story for Game. I remember hearing that for tghe first time, I had the same feeling as for this one and then How We Do dropped. This track is perfect for the summertime, has a simillar vibe then Game's Pain.
IMO they should dropped a nice summertime visual for this, let it ride through the summer and then drop the offical 1st single on some In Da Club, How We Do shit and drop the album in the 4th quarter.

As for the beat...this is DEFINATELY not intended as leftover material. This is the 1st single for a cat on aftermath and with bishop being touted by those cats over there as the next big thing and with dre getting ready for detox, no doubt this was some shit they thought was bangin.
Is it? I actually think the beat sounds hella clean and pro and even though its a loop, its nice and got a nice vibe to it. Dres mixing is still next level shit atleast, noone can get there shit to sound so crisp. As for the beat, like matty said...its very simplistic and even though dre has always been known the make what come across as simple beats, the fact that usually theres so much happening in it yet it still comes across as simple is the genius in his previous work...like it dont sound messy. As for this, its just simple and not alot of interesting shit going on in here.
As for the record on a whole, i honestly think this is solid album material and i'm not even big on bishop yet but i think this is a dope album cut.
The problem is...this is the first single...lol.....will it blow? who knows, its summer and aftermath and interscope will push it more than anyone else in the world will without doubt but for first single...i think most just expected something a lil more 'hype' or energetic i guess...
By the way lyrically bishop is on about the same level as game shit on here...still think he is over hyped as a lyricist...unless he can drop donkey kong/africa shit more often, that was flow/lyrical heat!!...
Anyway enough said, i think its hella clean and gotta nice laid back vibe to it...it could get big cuz its so chilled out for summer but its not something that will push bishop multi platinum...he needs a real heated/potential global street/club smash hit as a follow up...nice intro to the album though ;-)

Dr Dre has fallen off! Every time I hear a new beat it's average, not bad but just average. I have a pretty much every track Dre has ever produced, and he has always been light years ahead of other producers, now if you compare his recent work to J.R, Kanye West, Danja or even Scott Storch he is light years behind.
This Grown up beat sounds like I need a girl part 2, but not as good, Bishop sounds good though. This is no where near strong enough for a lead single though, if this track was on any of Bishop's previous tapes it would of been one of the weakest tracks.
Anyway end of rant going to listen to It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa to try and vent some of my frustration 8)

I see what you're saying as in drop this in the summer and then a follow up single followed by the album but i think as a dre song, westside story as superior in many ways. The beat was not very complex but it was still energetic and hyped and the way game just introduced himself to the world...'crip niggaz, blood niggaz' etc and the whole 'the west was always here' and the 50 on the hook at the time was still a pretty spectacular opening to the documentary. You gotta remember that westside story got mad love when it dropped and somehow how we do surpassed it. Also nobody knew name dropping was part of games persona at the time so when westside story dropped on he mentioned so many cats everyone was like 'damn that mad love' to them niggaz. Also game had aftermath AND gunit to back himup before his album dropped and his buzz was bigger than bishops by a decent amount imo.
You compared this with the game joint 'pain' which is a pretty good comparison but only thing i would say is that 'pain' is better music than this. Is game a better songwriter than bishop?? Who knows because game was getting coached by both dre and 50 when debut was dropping and i'm sure 50 gave him some tips at the time to make good ideas into hits whereas with bishop yet we don't know if he can make good music on albums.

Ok, everyone was expecting to have their head ripped off their shoulders with something absolutely otherworldly and insanely dope, and this isn't that
BUT this is a tight single, it's got an interesting chorus, it's all very well done, drums are dope, laid back guitar melody, I'm feeling it! It's better quality than the mixtape stuff he's put out (and that was all high quality), and I think it's thrown a lot of people just because it's a chilled out song rather than a hyped up song (which will hopefully follow this one)
They may well be going for the summer jam type of thing, same way Nuthin But A G Thang was a chilled single rather than an out and out banger
Also you gotta remember, we're all west coast hiphop heads, the song has to appeal to every mutherfucka if Bishop is to sell, and I think this could do, especially if they push it - I can picture that guitar melody getting stuck in everyone's heads the way other Dre singles have
With Game, I remember thinking Westcoast Story was kind of a throwaway In Da Club ripoff beat, and when How We Do dropped I was like, man, this beat is wack, it's like a kiddy keyboard 3 note melody! But those songs grew on me and now everyone talks about them like they're undisputed masterpieces, which is easy to do once the album had gone on to sell a shitload
I don't know if this song will blow up, but if it does we may well look back and say how it was dope, even though everyone is kind of ??? and :'( right now because it turned out to just be a song after all. People and DJs will probably give this a lot of play just because it's a new Dre beat, and it should hopefully pick up from there. He may then have a follow up one that seals the deal - something with Dre rapping or another high profile guest

I remember when 2001 dropped a LOT of Dre heads weren't feeling it because it was way more loopy than his older stuff, it didn't have that thick full, multi-layered sound with percussion panned out and live instruments that changed all the way through, etc... so people were hating on it... when Still DRE dropped people were saying those things and also stuff like, "well it's just a loop with two piano notes! ding ding ding ding ding ding ding, ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding"... people were like, we waited 7 or whatever years for this?? And it was the same old gangsta shit in the lyrics... so people were disappointed there...
But guess what, that shit sold loads and is now thought to be some untouchable album that everyone thought was mind blowing first time they heard it, which is not the case... same with Games singles, a lot of heads were like, this is kind of meeeh, but now that shit is held up like it was always an obvious classic
So I think a lot of us are over analyzing this... if I didn't know about Detox, if I didn't know Bishop was coming out with Dre beats, and if I didn't expect them to be doing some crazy next level shit, then if I heard this on the radio I'd think it was a dope single with hard drums, etc, which it is

A joint don't gotta be classic the first time you hear it to be a 5/5 joint. Like ucc said, most people including myself expected something abit more hype and got a mellow joint. Its very professional no doubt about that as we expect from dre but the actual shit thats happening in the beat is not very interesting imo. Could get love especially with them releasing it in the summer which is a good move but this is nothing of a 'street' single...this is either a buzz single or intended summer jam. I hope it blows, it probably will with it being a dre joint but i hope dre and bishop hit us with that real dre heat for the second joint.
You know whats gon make me mad...if we all hear the album and see 1-2 dre bangers and all think..."why the fuck was that not released as first single"...kinda like with busta...Only thing is i think dre will make sure bishop is done the right way with his single chioces etc, because when dre gets it right, its VERY correct,lol.
Anyway this could blow but its not going to sell more than 250k first week with this type of joint which is why im sure they'll follow this up with another dre heater...or i hope so.

loads of good drops in here but i gotta say, people dont call them joints undisputed classics because the album sold well, its vice versa, these abums sold so well because they're classic joints. A joint don't gotta be classic the first time you hear it to be a 5/5 joint. People did not expect in da club to sound like in da club when it dropped...especially coming off aftermath, everyone expected some dumbed down pop shit but then dre and 50 come up with a huge club banger. If you look at the Dre-produced singles, you can see that the last REAL hit was in 2005. And that was the Outta Control Remix. Busta and the label fucked it up and didn't release a dre single in 06. Jay-Z's "Lost One" wasn't a major hit single, just as "Boss's Life". So if Bishop really wants to BLOW up, I think this one here has to do it major.
Think about it... If this shit will flop (Remember "Feel On It") , we might never see the "The Reformation", let alone Detox.

There is another possibility and that is that Detox will drop before The Reformation... Detox would generate a bigger buzz for Bishop Lamont than any single could. Or who knows The Reformation gets scrapped and we'll only see Detox.

Talking about why dre looped this beat???? 90% of dre classics are looped beats... Thats been his style since forever...
But like others said.... This will probably end up a classic in the future... People are saying they dont like it now... But as soon as its all over the radio and everybodys talking about then their gonna talk about how dope it is and all this...
Its just a dope record all around... Im feelin it more then when i first heard In Da Club... Feelin it more then when i first heard How we do...

I think this is great record, the concept is good, Bishops delivery is dope instead of some people calling it lazy.
Expectations are never guaranteed, but as said before I think this track will grow on most of y'all.
I might be one of the biggest Bishop fans over here, and even I have to spin every track of him more than once to start liking it.
Lets wait for the word or get a interview and find out if this actually is the lead single.
If so, I can't wait for the video.. Imagine all the cameo's, and the great vibe to this record.

After bumping this half day long, I can say that I'm starting to REALLY feel it. I thought it was cool when I first heard it, but it's growing on me each time. Same with Bishops delivery. Like homie above said, this aint the joint for Bishop to rap circles around cats. His delivery is perfect for the vibe, and I'm diggin it.

I will be honest...im sure DETOX will disappoint 90% of you anyway because you have too high expectations..and don't get me wrong, it's your right, after all Dre and his crew hyped it so much themselves...and 85% of those will start to like a Dre produced record after paying a bit more attention when hearing it!
It's true, it's very simplistic, but it's one of those songs you can't get tired to listen to...and there's a lot of hidden content...the sound of the piano is just fantastic...there's even violin like sound in it. This in combination with the message of the song makes it a very very good summer song.
But still I agree on what many of you guys said...a record like "It Hurts'' would have been ''bigger'' to many of us, but we HAVE to take in consideration that his album has to have a mainstream appeal in order to sell.
Anyways Im just glad to hear The Reformation is not becoming an urban legend (unlike DETOX...ouhhh im pessimistic isn't it? lol!)

There is naturally going to be people complaining about Detox when it drops. First listen will be whatever. The best albums aren't always the ones you love every track from on the first sitting. I'd rather have a classic album that takes time for each song to grow on me than have that one where every song sounds dope when I first listen then ends up on the shelf after a month or two. 2001 was shit on for a long time too. The biggest thing that I see happening with Detox is people tearing it down because it doesn't have the exact features or track list they want. I think a lot of people are expecting a "Chronic" reunion album. I guess time will tell on it.
As for the Bishop record, I think if this single gets the right exposure, it will be huge. It just seems like the kind of song that will really grow on people the more they hear it.

i was expecting a hype track but cause some1 said it was a summer laid back track this is meets my expectations. At first i was a bit like wtf but its grown on me quite quickly. I know some people were expecting something to destroy everything out but theres only soo much Dre can do.

I think Dre and Bishop got hard time tryin to achieve what they doin. They tryin to bring a grown man feel to hip hop which has always been a young mans game (why do you think everyones callin themselves little and young?). Its obvious Jay Z tried to copy their style with Kingdom Come which got mixed reviews, so they gonna have to come with somethin unbelievable to achieve their aims.

Its a great song, the beats crazy, even if it is a loop, and i love the hook. But i doubt it will help Bishop's buzz in the mainstream, they need something special for that to happen.
