For years it's been 'Pac for me, but now with Untitled, and looking at his whole collection, putting out the greatest Hip-Hop album since the Goldyn Age with Illmatic, defeating Jay-Z is a battle, putting out 2 classic CDs. and his last 2 CDs might be the most important releases since 2Pac died. I think I have no choice, this long time 2Pac fan, who calls 2Pac the GOAT has to change, after today, it's offical in my opinion, Nas is the GOAT. Fuck King of NY, he's at a higher level.

He's #2 for me; To be the greatest ever, it comes down to your discography for me. Scarface has the best discography in hip-hop with Nas a close second. Face's is solid up and down and Nas has 2-3 average/bad albums imo. Ice Cube is third.

Going by your definition of classic, Bone absolutely has 4 classics. In fact, E. 1999 Eternal, Art of War and Resurrection all shit on the entire discography of Cam'ron... including Come Home With Me.

Biggie is top 10, but the top 5 is so solid that it's hard to crack, and 2 albums wouldn't do it. Rakim changed the game in a way that he is still called the GOAT by most the game's insiders, Ice Cube is the Godfather of Gangsta Rap as he changed the game by putting politics into gangsta rap and he wrote classics from NWA to his solo shit, Scarface wrote classics, from the Geto Boys to his solo shit, from 1989 all the way to 2002, that 13 years so that's hard to deal with, 2Pac is 2Pac, been dead for 12 years and his leftovers shit on 99% of the rappers out since his death, and Nas just put out maybe the most important album in at least 12 years, on top of that he has maybe the greatest Hip-Hop album in Illmatic.
Rakim, Ice Cube, Scarface, 2Pac and Nas, I can't say Biggie is higher on the GOAT ranking.

2Pac, OK... but 2Pac had potential to put out albums like Nigger, he didn't live long enough. Judging by his work, what we have is 5 solid years, but really only 3 years at his prime, 1993-1996, were as Nas has hit 3 primes, 1994-1996, and 2001, 2006-2008. Nas has been so good for so long.

Rakim, Nas passed the God MC with Stillmatic honestly, Rakim was lyrically dangerous, but could never hit politically what Nas did. Nas took Rakim's blueprint, and did what everyone expected him too, he went further than it. Rakim will alway be God, and Nas will always be God's Son, but like the Bible, it's God's Son that's message is more important.
Kool G Rap, like Rakim, Nas was influenced by him, but Kool G was never, ever at the level of a Illmatic, of a Stillmatic, of Nigger, of What Goes Around, Nas has been on top for 14 years. Kool G can't even touch that.
GZA, great artist, but has not impacted the solo game like he did as a member of Wu. Nas, 14 years as a top artist, GZA ain't there.
Juice, he beat Em, and Supernatural, which is great, but dude never put out an album that was at the artistic level as a Nas. Lyrical, yes, artistic, no.

Well to be honest, the best of this generation we wouldn't know until the next one. In the Gangsta Rap era, we didn't know 'Pac was truly the best until after 1996, until then there were people that'd swear Snoop, and even in Cali I heard little of Ice Cube. Now most will put Cube and 'Pac above Snoop. In the Bling Era, you'd be hard press to find anyone say Jay-Z wasn't the best, but now Eminem and Nas are both ranked above Jay in most list. This generation I'd say started in 2004-5, as 2004 signaled the end of the Bling Era with songs like Why, the rise of Reggaeton, and the South becoming the dominate region. Each era last on average about 6-8 years, and so this era, the Hip-Hop is Dead era will last until about 2010-2012. That's when we truly will know who is the best of this generation. I think for now, T.I. is the best because first off, his region is on top, and his the driving force behind that, his more relevent than Chamillionaire and he has more commerical appeal than Game. Though Weezy is taking that Jay status, because as an era, since 2004, we have not had that dominate figure, like Jay-Z, like 2Pac, T.I. was the close, but Weezy is even closer. But once this era has ended, we'd truly know. I know one thing, it's in this era that Nas has earned himself an argument of GOAT.

Technique is the best political rapper today, and IF he ever drops a hot album indy and with a single, he might shut down arguments... lol. All he needs is one song on the radio and a 5 mic classic.

^I was SHOCKED HipHop Police didnt blow up..sure it was a creative concept which usually doesnt do good in the mainstream, but the hook was very catchy and extremely radio friendly as was the beat - the song had a poppy feel to it which I thought would burn up the radios regardless of the concept behind it - guess i was wrong

most probably didnt know what was goin on in that song. i mean he was the cop and the criminal, slick too. the average music ear most likely didnt catch the idea of the song. and it was just underlooked from there on.

Rakim even says he has trouble putting out new material cuz all the other cats have stepped up so much lyrically (metaphors, punchlines, flows) that it's hard for him to stay relevant..
If Pac's catalogue were put out now. Ppl would say MATW is some conscious Dead Prez shit. AEOM would be "typical gangsta, girls, gun shit"..
Alot of people put a bias on Big and Pac cuz they helped introduce the brilliance to rap, that nowadays, rappers have put into their arsenal and expanded on. Just cuz they started it, doesn't mean they were the best at it..

Joe Budden has a catalogue of over 15 burned CD-R's (says my booklet)... that is alot of songs. And about only 2-3 CD'Rs worth of material I would say solely puts him in top 3,top 5, top 10 position. But the rest of these rappers can only put 1-2 a year on various forms of media. And for most of em, that's only filling a CD's worth. that's why I always like to check Best Of's from actual fans and mixtape DJ's. Cuz they don't only get the album material in there. U can miss one song from someone that could bump him up a notch in ur top lists...

Problem is, except Scarface because he's always been in my top 10, the others haven't put out constant classic albums. Nas is the most consistent guy in rap, and that level is so high. If I was to compare him, it's like Wayne Gretzky in hockey. Yeah, he had an amazing early part of his career, Gretzky was winning Stanley Cups, Nas had Illmatic and It was Written... But after so many years, you look and realize, god damn, no one is touching what homeboy just did. Are their better rappers than Nas, maybe, I don't think so, but maybe. But Nas has that Greatness factor. He just seems to deliver over and over and over again, save his 4th album. Did Black Thought or Kool G have an album that bad? No. But have Black Thought or Kool G have an album better than Illmatic, It was Written, Stillmatic, Untitled? The answer is no.

Neither one is GOAT. Always funny to me when this topic comes up how if somebody says one isnt goat its assumed youre a fan of the other. I been listenin to Rap 20+. Both of them have become complacent IMO because everything they put out is immediately accepted as amazing. If you was them why would you even try or put effort into the shit if no matter what people gon call it dope. They know the sheep gonna go flock to it anyway. When looking at "All Time", that is the past. And when looking at the greatest rappers, the ones who made the best albums, you have to say Nas. No one's peak is as high as his. People to this day try to recreate their own Illmatic. Look at the date I posted this, 5 years ago. I ain't read no CNN article and then said this. I've been on this for a long time now. Look at my ranking previous to this, it was either 2Pac or Rakim. I could never decide. But Untitled convinced me.
I always count Black Thought as the Roots, and so he gets judged on that for me, he is the main rapper of the group. So with that said, I don't knock him for not having a solo. But no Roots album ever touched any of Nas.
