Y'all knew it was coming, lol. I live in Canada, so I'm gonna be your main man for Canadian Hip Hop as I am VERY into it. Vancouver has the only Urban Radio station in the whole country, and since I live In Vancouver I listen to it ALL THE TIME. They play tons of dope canadian music. Canadian Hip Hop gets vurtually no respect from American (and overseas) fans. Even when American artists collaborate with Canadian artists, it doesn't help them out. So I'm gonna be your man for all the latest dope jams, news, and all that good shit. Since they get no love anywhere else. I'm gonna list some Canadian artists and write a little about them for y'all.
Rascalz- These guys are from Vancouver and were one of the first groups representing for Canada. They have collaborated with KRS-ONE, Beatnuts, and other Canadian artists.
Choclair- From Toronto. This guy is kind of the Front Man of Canadian Hip Hop in the sense that he's like our Ja-Rule (if that makes sense lol). Everybody knows him and thinks he's dope. Although IMO he ain't all he's cracked up to be. He's signed to prioroty records, although they aren't really helpin him out. He has collaborated with Guru, Kurupt, ODB, The Roots and other Canadian artists.
Kardianal Offishall- This guy is also from T.O., he's a dope producer & rapper. He's very entertaining, his current single blowin up the radio features busta rhymes, and is titled "ol Time Killin" (remix). IMO his best song to date is "G Walkin" feat. Glenn Lewis. Last year he had an underground hit titled "Yur Ghetto" which won an award at HipHopSite.com.
Saukrates- A very dope producer/mc comin out of T.O. Redman signed him to his label, and he also has a song on the "How High" soundtrack. Although that is far from his best work. His album features collaborations with Xzibit, and Pharoe Monch.
Ghetto Concept- These guys are the 'flashy ones' who always have the dope videos and crystal poppin. They have some very dope songs, although it is very commercial intended.
Harpoon Missile- Pretty new, i don't know much about the poon, lol. BUt their new single "I Try" is VERY dope.
K-Os- This guy is real deep. He can sing like a mutha too. He's real dope, IMO.
Checkmate- From Van. DOn't know a whole lot about this guy, although on DJ Jam's (snoops dj) website, there is a flyer of him.
Moka Only- He sounds EXACTLY like Common when he raps. He's the guy who sings in all of the Swollen Member Tracks.
Swollen Members- Ok, I saved the best for last, what can I say about these two? They are fuckin dope. IMO they are better than 80% of all Hip Hop out right now. They represent Vancouver. All i can say is check them out, you wont believe what you hear. It's just amazing, I can't even explain it. Here's some info I found about them:
In 1996 they traveled to the B-Boy summit in San Deigo, where Madchild battled and was initiated into the legendary Rock Steady Crew, hip hop's highest respected collective, making Swollen Members one of only three Rock Steady affiliated groups.
If anyone has any questions about any canadian hip hop artists, don't hesitate to ask. Cuz I'm NOT gonna stop tellin. ;D

Swollen Members Yea, they pretty dope, but I aint heard enuff of them yet.
-
I have Swollen Member's "Bad Dreams".. It's alright. I aint feelin the whole album but they definatley got some pretty tight flows.
I know about Kardinal Official.. he's alright too.. does that jamaican thing.. sometimes it could sound really dope.. other times it could get kind of annoying.
I also know about Choclair. I heard his song with Kurupt. He was on the 3 stikes soundtrack. He's cool too... I understand what you say about him being your guys' Ja Rule though..
-
I've heard & liked a considerable amount of ish from Choclair, "Bump" being my fav. so far, funky ass beat ;D "Situation 9" is dope too.

I have no idea, out in the west of Canada, we don't really promote the French Language, it's more in the east

I haven't yet picked up the Battle Axe records comp but i plan to do so soon. I have Moka Only's new album "lime green" and it's fuckin tite. This was the first time I ever heard him rap, and he sounds exactly like common.

Props Suga.. I made a post like this a couple months ago, but nobody gave a shit. Anyway, my favorite mainstream Canadian artists at the moment are: Ghetto Concept, Choclair, Kardi, and Jellestone.. I ain't really feelin' Swollen Members, but I liked Fuel Injected, and their new joint is aight.. I think Moka Only is dope as hell, though.
As for K-Os.. fuck him, can't stand the homie. He thinks he's the shit cause he's so "anti-bling-bling" and all that.. whenever I see him on TV, he's always talkin' 'bout how he hates commercial hip-hop with ice, cars, bitches, etc. in the videos. He thinks he's so real cause he rides a bike dressed up like Gilligan in his video ::). He's entitled to his own opinion, but he expresses it too damn much.. he needs to stop whinin' like a bitch and get over it.

LMAO you raise a good point there about K-Os... i never really thought about that but it's true... he does take the "anti-bling-bling" a bit to far... and yeah at the moment for canadian hip-hop im feelin "Jelleestone" the most... his cd "Jelleestone thirteen" is off the hook...
Peace
-
Anyone heard of D-Meezie?
shit, nigga comes correct on every song
its gangsta too

-

-
i went and saw swollen members with moka only like 3 weeks ago and it was tight...met moka and prevail, and sat next to mad child at the end and he was a stoned and zoned out so i didn't really say nothing to him...the concert was crazy, i got kicked in the face from a crowd surfer and my girlfriend's hand got stepped on by prevail...the shit was hype though...they did all their best songs expect for the ones with son doobie but that's aight...
yo suga, is there gonna be a cd released by son doobie anytime soon...he is maddd dope...i picked up one of funkdoobiest's cds today, the one with superhoes and lost in thought, the shit's classic if yall ain't know, and i plan on picking up funkdoobiest's other 2 cd's as well...
i also went to get the swollen members single today with
1. Bring It Home
2. Fuel Injected (Remix)
3. Lady Venom
on it but it was all sold out so i'm kinda bummed about that...i'm also bummed that i got bad dreams when it first came out because they released that new version with those songs on it and it pisses me off, peace.

I used to like sum rappa called Bass-Z, I think he is canadian, but I haven't listened to jack shit from him from a cupple of years coz i lost interest, do any of u know him?
-
I found an MP3 of him on my computer called "Yall Don't Feel Me", it pretty good. I have no idea where I got this song from, i think it just showed up one day, lol. He calls himself Bass-Zee, and in canada we pronouce 'Z' as 'Zed' rather than 'Zee', so I dunno.
-
hold up yall,
ghetto concept aint commercial man, they str8 street niggaz from Rexdale man, my man knows em and Infinite, they hold it down,
as for Swollen Members, they dont come close to Kardinal Offishall, not here in T Dot that is, in fact except for the videos that Much forces us to digest, SM dont get much love in Toronto
and Suga Foot, Van city aint the only place in Canada that has an urban radio station,
FLOW 93.5 here in Toronto, is all urban (rap, rnb, reggae)
-
Well my bad then dogg, When we got the radio station, we had peeps like Ja Rule doin commercials goin "Congratulations Vancouver on getting Canada's first urban radio station", and Muchmusic came out here and did a whole show on Vibe, sayin that it was canada's 1st and only urban radio. And they always say that on the station too. So i dunno. Maybe your radio station is co-op, cuz we got like 2 or 3 of those that play a lot of Hip Hop.
And as far as SM gettin no love out there, that's a shame. But I guess it's kinda like east & west, here in canada, it's just like the states, the west gets no love in the east, but the east still gets love in the west. O well, I guess shit's different over there in the big city, lol.
-
dont get me wrong, the TV and radio's play that shit ALOT
but thats cuz u know, 30% of all shit played has to be Canadian
in the clubs, in the hip hop scene, every one i talk to, no one really likes Swollen Members, simply because Toronto is heavily West Indian influenced, thats why even Choiclair dont get love here, Kardi runs T dOT
-
Man, Choclair seems to be the like the Front man of Canadian Hip Hop (for the time being) and I've never heard of anyone that actually really likes him, lol. I mean he's got some dope songs and shit, I just don't see what other people see in him. And we get hella T Dot songs on our radio too. Most of it is like real real new shit too, like Karindal & Saukrates "Doin it", that is some tite shit right there.
And after SM, Kardi is my 2nd fav. He's got charisma, and he's hella dope at producing and rapping, although I'm not really diggin his whole Jamaican thing thing.
On a side note, Did anyone catch Jin in T Dot last nite? How was he?
-
hold up yall,
ghetto concept aint commercial man, they str8 street niggaz from Rexdale man, my man knows em and Infinite, they hold it down,
I know they been doin this for a long ass time, and I admire that they kept at it for so long, But i mean a lot of their music sounds too commercial for me now. Their old stuff even from last year sounds better to me. But I guess that's just my opinion. Didn't infinite leave GC? I got his album 360 degrees, it only has like 4 songs but they all tite. He's got tons of potential too.
-

Yeah i got that Infinite cd to... all 4-5 songs were tight... "One day" was a dope track, same with "Wise Guys"
-
yeah infinite left ghetto concept
as for Jin, i saw him on Much, and he spit some freestyles on Flow 93.5, they were dope
-

yeah that is a pretty good song, i thik i downloaded that 1 off a fansite called bassz.cjb.net , be sure to check that out, it don't get updated too often but it has sum mp3's on there.
and we also pronounce z as zed, but he duz definitely pronounce his name bass-zee.
-

-

-

-
Im definatly down w Canadian HipHop, but I cant stand Swollen Members...
Choclair's album "Ice Cold" was very dope a 8/10 IMO...
I got Kardi's album "Firestarter" which is also very dope...
And Saukrates album is good, but he has much potential to be alot better. "Money or Love" and "The Ultimate" ft. Ruck (Helta Sketlah) are my fav. Saukrates tracks.
Nice summary tho by Suga of all the Canadian artists... ;)
-
damn, this thread is old as hell, lol. Why the fuck don't you like SM? They dope!
anyways, now that this old topic got dragged back up, I'll post up about more VANCOUVER Artists later.
-
Anyone heard of Point Blank? They from TO, they're pretty fucking tight. I've only managed to find 2 of there tracks though, there might be more now I guess but try checkthing them out. If you can't find shit then get a hold of me.
In Ottawa we finally got a urban station Hot 89.9 which isn't the greatest but it makes due when I'm in a car that doesn't have a cd player.
