Title: Will we ever get another true classic?
Post by: smegma on August 30, 2008, 07:36:38 AM
With the way the music industry has changed over the years, I don't think we'll ever get to hear another true classic in negro music. What was the last album that had a big impact on the direction music producers went, that sold like crazy, that everybody loved, that had no fillers and that people still talk about? I think it might have been "2001" from Dr. Dre. It's almost 10 years ago that that album came out.

Nowadays new songs leak out so early and most radio singles are poppy and garbage. I can't forget about the numerous wacky rappers that to be rich, but really signed a slave deal. That already takes everything away from a true classic. I don't think we'll ever get to hear another classic album.

Yer, we''l never get a true classic ever again, but if you talk modern day, thats about as good as its gonna get from now on. Although that Termanlology album does have the potential.

But Termanology's album won't go over the counter more than 300 times.

Theres definately been extremely dope albums and imo Lupe Fiascos Food and Liquor is just as high-a-standard as some 90s classics. Both Clipse albums are creative and well executed and Hell Hath No Fury in my books was an outstanding album. In conclusion i think Food and Liquor & Hell Hath No Fury prove rappers are still able to make classics these days.

We won't get another true classic and that's 99.99 % sure imo... We can't even get solid albums anymore ... 2008 is by far the weakest year in hip hop history and it'll get worse and worse ...

2008 aint the weakest year 07 and 06 were. All we got was a few bullshit albums and no sales. Lil Wayne just sold a million copies which is big for today and Nas, Game and Cube put out dope albums.

Define "classic". I consider Get Rich or Die Tryin' as a classic album, as I do A.W.O.L. by AZ, Stillmatic by Nas, The Jack Artist by the Jacka, A Long Hot Summer by Masta Ace, Ultimate Victory, and a few others. If you mean will another Illmatic ever come out, the answer's gotta be no.

Do you not understand, why should we have to pay for a half assed track when we most likely will want the rest. Everytime the song comes on, I'm gonna have to skip it. i don't want that, i want an album full of great tracks, not 1 dud spoilin it.

I don't recall that. That song is not hip hop. And whats with you having to insert a name into yur replies? I aint called you shit, yet i have a stupid ass and I'm a fuck face. I just don't understand why you stick up for this song, there is nothing wrong with disliking one of your favourite artists tracks.
go listen to life after death 'playa hater' and 'another'. i happen to like the song and i don't think it's bad as people are making it out to be. you'll have to excuse the name callin'. and the thing is this tip's sixth album not his first, second, or third. he should be applauded for going left field instead of being critisized. if he hadda came wit some more dope boy shit people would be sayin' he hasn't grown as an artist....damned if you do damned if you don't.

I don't think we'll ever get to hear another classic album.

yes, Detox

Eventually, yes.  Now, IMO there hasn't been much that i think will stand the test of time.  The majority of rap has gone from storytelling (for an example, see Geto Boys - My Mind's Playing Tricks On Me), to catchy hooks and punchlines that don't tie in with a story and don't really make a cohesive song.  Its hard to want to listen to random catch phrases and slogans more than a few times...don't get me wrong, there's a place for this stuff, I just don't see it as having the same quality.

Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner

^^^ Amazing album; original and from the heart. Presents a true image of urban life in the UK in a menacing tone. Of course most AMericans won't appreciate it because they're to close minded to listen to another accent but this album is undoubtedly one of the best albums of the decade.

I could never listen to a whole Dizzee album cause of his voice. I've heard some of his singles and I didn't like them at all

we r obviously in a new time and era in music. in the late 80's/90's rap was just starting to take over. there were a lot of hungry artists looking to create a buzz.

nowadays, those same artists aren't as inspired to keep coming up with that quality music...as well as there being hardly any up-and-coming artists.

another classic isn't out of the question yet, but we'll never see as many as there used to be, obviously.

But there's a difference to group and solo albums.
