Title: Akon Says “I Don’t Think Nate’s Any Competition To What We’re Doing Right Now”
Post by: Blood$ on December 02, 2008, 03:21:46 PM
http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=30750

Akon is one of three crooners to have held hip-hop’s hook man crown since R&B hooks became the norm in the 90s.

Nate Dogg, Kon and his protege T-Pain, have all taken turns as the hook man du jour -seemingly establishing a monopoly on rap hooks during their respectives reigns. While Nate, the senior of the group has been hooking rappers up for 16 years, Kon thinks he’s no match for what he and Pain have been doing the past few years.

“I mean it depends on what you consider to be a hook man,” Kon told XXLMag.com. ”Nate, I don’t think he’s any competition to what we’re doing right now. The West Coast, which was incredibly hot, there wasn’t nobody touching Nate Dogg at that time. I was around at that time. It wasn’t no getting through them doors.

“Nate had it locked down,” Kon continued. “But I think as time started changing, I slowly took over because I came with more than just a hook. I came and gave you the song itself. When you came to Akon for a record, you’ll get the record, you’ll the track, you’ll get the song and the concept for it.”

But when it comes down to best hook man off all time, Kon gives it up to his own signee, T-Pain.

“If I had to give it personally to anybody, I would give it to T-Pain,” Kon revealed. ”I always looked at him as someone that can add a lot of color to someone’s record. I do it a lot of different ways, but I’m always thinking business when I’m doing it. Pain is doing it for the fun of it. I strategize differently. I do it according to what territories I need to take over. Pain does it just cause he loves to do it.” -Marvin Brandon

he's right, Nate Dogg wouldn't touch this gay shit

sure Nate has a few bad apples in his catalog, but that's very very few

Akon's a joke, stop lyin about your criminal record, you're worse than Rick Ross

Nate's classics will live way longer into the future than this disco shit

This is just the usual rep your new album by saying something slightly controversial stuff that all artists do these days.. there's not much to it.

If you look away from the ridiculous statement about T-Pain, he got some points though.. plus he gave Nate his respects.
Nate hasn't been active (+ sick) for a couple of years, so of course he hasn't been competition, and Nate did it another way then Akon:

On a similar note, Nate Dogg better return soon..  :(

If you look away from the ridiculous statement about T-Pain, he got some points though.. plus he gave Nate his respects.
Nate hasn't been active (+ sick) for a couple of years, so of course he hasn't been competition, and Nate did it another way then Akon:

  • Nate Dogg jumped on singles by artists that wanted to sell, on a near finished track from usually the hottest producer at the moment, he basically just added a hook.
  • Akon is producing/co-producing tracks, (signing producers to produce as well), adding hooks to it and mastering it, and shopping it around for a set price, depending on the hit potential. I think he shops around whole CD's full of completed tracks with finished hooks, and empty space for verses to be inserted. The rapper can just add a verse to it, and he got a hit. Not to mention that Akon now runs his own label with more than 20 signed artists and about 10 contracted producers.. he's basically CEO, Exec.producer, producer, singer and A/R rolled into 1, he can pull a lot of strings now.

On a similar note, Nate Dogg better return soon..  :(

Preach on. Akon isn't saying that he's a better hook writer than Nate, he's saying he's much more than just a hook writer. He produces, creates song concepts from sracth, is a CEO... That T-Pain comment was foolish though.

LMAO ya'll are too emo' man.  face it doggy the new team is here.  I love Nate and grew up on Nate but dam... to say that Nate Dogg is artistikly better than TPain is a hoax and a overstatement.  Everybody is doin' the TPain and NOT JUST bcuz its the hot thing to do now either.  Do u know how fun it is to use a AutoTune.  Its not the artist responsibility to drop what Jome & Lunatic wanna hear every single track.  And TPain is gonna be the Isaac Hayes of rap one day, just give him about 10-15 more years.  Akon wasn't be controversial, he was being real.  Besides the Boss Life Remix (which he sounded off/un-natural on truthfully) what was a hit Nate made in the past 5yrs? I know he's been sick so he gets a pass= a well deserved pass but to lump him in a class wit' Stevie Wonder and put Akon/TPain in a class wit' Hanson isn't accurate.

anyways anyone of ya'll heard that new Rich Boy called "Drop"?  you can't tell me HipHop is garbage and most of the new shit is wack.

If people are not doing the "T-Pain" thing because it is hot then why are they doing it then. Hip hop and most music genres are full of mindless sheep that follow trends. Next year it will be a new name and new face. I would like to hear if T can hold a note and do a whole album singing without equipment.

to say that Nate Dogg is artistikly better than TPain is a hoax and a overstatement.

Nate has done shit loads of great hooks. i have not liked 1 T-Pain hook ever. he is extremely over rated and will disappear into the distance in a few years time, just like Ja Rule did when he was hot back then.

Everybody is doin' the TPain and NOT JUST bcuz its the hot thing to do now either..

Na, course not.

I envy your hate for Akon and T-Pain. haha

anyway, this shit is fucked up. with all Nate's going through and shit, Akon still says that shit?
it's not Nate's fault that he didn't have a real solo career. he didn't have anyone backing him and was too busy making loot off classic hooks.
Nate knew he didn't have to even have a solo career to be popular, but knew he had to do something, so he released Music & Me.

Akon is a bitch and his voice is irritating. I don't listen to Nate's shit anymore, but I rather listen to his than Akon's.
Akon is nothing but a starving little African trying to make it in the US (no racist).

lets b real here.  as far as hooks go, akon is right him n t-pain are doing the whole hook thing on a whole other level.  nate did it big for the west no doubt.  but akon and t-pain have made hits for artist from the west, south, florida, and the east coast.  u cant even compare it right now.  labels wont even put out a single by an artist without a t-pain or akon feature,  muthafukas got it on lock.

dont get me wrong.  i rather listen to a laid back nate track any day over pains auto-tune ass or akons lil bitch voice.  but mutha fuckas r doing the hook thing to a whole other level.  gota admit that

With Akon's main point, Nate is known for his hooks, Akon is known for his songs. Now Nate was going to go the whole straight R&B route, and drop the Nate Dogg name, but sadly we'd never know. I do own his 3 albums, and I can say it's a mix bag, but his first album (actually 2 albums, but you know the story) was a classic, and had it been big time, like Death Row 1995 like it was suppose to, Nate's solo career might be different.

As for T-Pain. T-PAIN CAN'T SING!!! T-Pain is the wack as fuck. At least when I heard Akon, I was like, I can fuck with this dude's music. Locked Up was the shit, Lonely gave me some good memories, and Ghetto was that jam. T-Pain bit Roger Troutman, and wants royalties for it. Dude sang live for the hip-Hop honors award honoring another person he bit, Teddy Riley, and just blew.

As an artist, Akon has to come out with some more classics before I put him over Nate, but T-Pain ain't even in the conversation.

^^^ LOL ^^^ tru statement and I'm ridin' wit' Nate, but Akon and T Pain are them boys right now and truth be told down the line (15-20 yrs) more people will be playing Akon & T Pain's music more.  And for those who keep saying T Pain is talentless; I guess you've never heard a T Pain album.  T Pain is a melodic, catchy, creative, ORIGINAL artist.  Not to mention him & Akon make their own beats/music.  The only thing Pain jacked was the autotune, and muthafuckas from EVERY genre of music have been doin' it way before Eazy E had a deal.  If your gonna bash artist make sure you have facts and a valid point.  They sell records bcuz they nice at what they do, NOT bcuz the record companies are trying to go overkill on their artist.  Last time I checked white folx aint been too kind to niggas.  When people talk about the downfall of a perticular artist/band. etc. they don't mention talk about the label as much bcuz the label keeps on moving and gettin money.

Stop trying to get on these boards and voice your ignorant ass opinion.  Do some research, open your mind, MAKE YOUR OWN SHIT and stop bashing on the next man- it makes all of ya'll look like fags truthfully.  It's like you just want people to respond to your bullshit just to provoke a reaction.  They only reason why I react and act is bcuz thats all people seem to do and it's hurting the game (ya'll just don't see the bigger picture).  It's just like what Kanye said about Beyonce' and Tina Turner; Beyonce' is pass Tina Turner- if it wasn't for the infamous name "Ike Turner" and the phrase "What's Love Got To Do With It?" then Tina Turner would've vanished away like a Phyllis Hyman.  I can't wait for these boards to change up on the demographics, it makes me have sort of a hate for the rap "fans" of the world.

And the TPain/Isaac Hayes comment is acurate.  I can't make love to my girl playin' nothin' but oldies, bitches don't like that shit and neither do I.  Teddy Penherassdown helps u get alot more ass than Mr. Hayes, that's just a fact.  I wasn't so lucky bumpin' the Nate Dogg either.  But if you give me a bottle and a chris brown or a rihanna cd then that's another story.

Truth be told, in 15-20 years, Akon and T-Pain will be played as much as Nate Dogg is now. Who will people play, whoever is hot then. Plan fact.

I have no idea who compared Tina to Beyonce besides Kanye, he got his opinion and since he does his thing his entitled to it.

You got it twisted homie. yeah in 2008 it may look Akon/T-Pain>Nate Dogg, but in 2001 people were saying Ja Rule=2Pac, and I don't hear that now. in 2012 will people say that. It's a large picture. Today, the biggest artist I feel is Kanye, Weezy to me is like Jay was in 2000, everyone saying his ruining the game, but in 5 years people will say his a legend, expect the people saying his ruining the game. Kanye though will have longevity because even if solo career flops, his still making beats. He'll be the next Pete Rock. But to compare yesterday with today is hard to do. It's almost impossible. That's why I say this, in 4-5 years, get back at me on Akon v. Nate. Already though I can say T-Pain is out the question. I can't think of 1 song T-Pain put out that has large replay value. I'm in Luv (Wit a Stripper) might be the closest, but it's already died down now, Buy You a Drink and Bartender are cool, but I mean they aren't that lasting song that an artist gets known for. I can at least think of 3 songs for Akon that he'll be remembered for.

Now as for Nate Dogg, dude was part of classics, classic hip-hop albums, he made songs classic. When we first heard dude on Deez Nuttz, things changed. Hooks in Hip-Hop changed forever, as yeah LL Cool J put New Edition on a track, or Melli Mel got on a Shaka Khan song, but Nate just ripped the R&B/Hip-Hop fusion a new ass hole. Nate put a stamp on Hip-Hop that's been copied over and over, from Ja Rule, to Timberland, to the Black Eye Peas adding Fergie, to now Akon and T-Pain. Where these people stack up, it's up to discussion. But when was the last time Akon and T-Pain were on stage with someone the caliber of Mariah Carey, I think this locks it up until then.

Like I've mentioned before; None of ya'll have heard the albums.  You're only talking Singles, I'm not talking about who had a bigger hit- who gives a fuck- I'm talkin artistry.  And yeah Nate did it first, so what- If you gonna go like that then EVERYBODY COPIED JAMES BROWN (from country 2 gospel).  and i've NEVER heard people compare Pac 2 Ja Rule (you'd get slapped 4 that shit and still would, now DMX is arguable)- dont know what section of the world u live in  :o or who and what type of people you communicated with  ::).  It seems like none of ya'll grew up and got tha memo that it's okay to like girls (remember pre-school).  And I fucks wit Nate Dogg harder than Akon, but truthfully speaking they (Kon & Pain) are more diverse than Nate- so in a way that makes them better off the top.  And for some1 to say that I'm only getting teenage pussy to their music is funny.  But maybe you're right 15-20 yrs from now they'll be playing some1 else more (and they wont be the James Browns or the Van Halens) but I can gaurentee you on this day of this year that when history is written they'll be on top (maybe just TPain) and its not gonna be bcuz of politics.... on that note I'd like to say Get Well Soon & Fully to Nate Dogg, ya'll makin me feel like I'm tryna talk down/bad about the man when that's the farthest from the truth.

Currently   =   Akon>>>>Nate
All time =       Nate>>>>Akon

I can agree with that. Akon will never touch Nate's legacy/catalogue

Jome summed what I wanted to say. With the production Akon takes it a step further than Nate Dogg has done, but that doesn't mean that Akon comes close to Nate Dogg when it comes to singing hooks.

akon whines like a bitch and t pain is just gay

How is it not Nate's fault that he can't put out a solo?  Prior to him being sick, he had plenty of time to record a solo project.  To me, that solo project he did some years ago, had no replay value except for a song or two.  But I think he was content with receiving royalties from all of the hooks he did.  Everyone has a lane in the music game and Akon and T-Pain found their niche.

Pain does it just cause he loves to do it.” -Marvin Brandon

sad truth is, 99% of people listening to rap today believe the garbage coming out of acoon's mouth, which is why hip hop is dead
