Nas told Billboard last week he was cooking up a few surprises, and now we know one of them: an as-yet-untitled collaboration with reggae star Damian Marley.
The pair has been recording quietly in Los Angeles for the last several weeks. Nas' manager, Anthony Saleh, tells Billboard the project will most likely be released in the spring. It's not clear which label will release it; Nas is signed to Def Jam, while Marley records for Universal.
"We've been recording in a studio, where people like Mick Jagger are recording. No one knew who we were," Saleh says. "We're going to Miami this week to finish it up and we're aiming to tour for the album this summer."
In addition to its regular incarnation, the album may also be released in a special edition exclusively through Best Buy or Target. A portion of the proceeds will go toward building a school in Africa, though details are still being solidified.
As previously reported, Nas guests on a song on Dr. Dre's long-in-the-works "Detox" album, due sometime this year. He was nominated for two Grammys at Sunday's 51st annual awards but lost in both the best rap solo performance and best rap album categories.

Which producers/beatmakers do you hope to see on this record ?

Maybe Stphen Marley who has produced most of the Damien Marley's albums... and Polow Da Don perhaps, "Hero's" beat is pretty dope. DJ Green Lantern has also produced couple of songs for Nas lately, maybe him. And DJ Toomp. And since it is Nas' album, I gotta say DJ Premier & Dre.

Hopefully that Game song "Street Ryders" will be on it, cause Damian was suppose to be on the hook but didnt get cleared and Nas had a verse on it, the song sounded unreal. I doubt it will be on it though since its a Game track!!!

Nas took to the blogs late last week to update fans about his wife, R&B singer, Kelis’ pregnancy. The pair just recently announced the exciting news that they are expecting their first child together .
In a blog posted to Russell Simmons' website, Globalgrind.com, Nas enthusiastically announced that he and Kelis will indeed be expecting a baby boy.
“Personally, life is good,” he wrote on the site. “I'm sure that y'all heard K is expecting. The Internet seems to be more excited than I am. It's crazy! I got too much to think about, and I didn't wanna leave all my fans out the loop. But I wanted to let ya'll know from me personally that I'm having my first SON!!!!!”
This will be the Hip Hop couple’s first child, after having married back in 2005 in an Atlanta wedding. Nas has one 15 year-old daughter from a previous relationship with ex-fiancée, Carmen Bryan.
In addition to the joyful baby news, Esco also updated fans on the status of his upcoming album with reggae artist Damian “Jr. Gong" Marley.
"I been celebrating life ya'll,” he continued. “Also I want you all to know that the Nas and Damian Marley album is coming in the next few months. It's something we have been secretly working on. Tour this summer too!”
As he told MTV news at the Grammy Awards show about the album, "[Damian and I are] tryin' to build some schools in Africa with this one, and trying to build empowerment. We're tryin' to show love and stuff with this album. So, the record's… all about really the 'hood and Africa also as well. That's coming out real soon."

thats a good collarboration, can't wait for the album to drop, yes surr, some soulja shit you know

"Road to Zion" was a great cut.. so this would kind of be like a dream come true for me. Because with the exception of Lucky Dube's albums, Welcome To Jamrock is probably my next favorite Reggae album, so therefore he's my favorite living reggae artist and Nas is my favorite living rapper... so it doesn't get much better than this.
Hope this really happens, I'll be bumping this album wherever I go for years to come!
-
I just read it on AHH. I hope they make a lot of music to smoke to (instrumental/vibe wise). I could go for alot of tracks like "Blunt Ashes". Somethin' real mellow to smoke to on every/most tracks and not that "inspired" sound on all the music (that shit gets old) we'll be looking at a classic. It can't get too complicated 4 a classic to come out like that.

I-Wayne is probably my 3rd favorite Reggae artist behind Lucky Dube and Damian Marley. My favorite track of his is "Living In Love", dude is basically flowing on that track and his flow is almost like a Bone style, because it's like singing and rapping at the same time, the shit sounds tight as fuck
-
I can't wait for this shit, it sounds pretty good, and Nas + Damian Marley = Dope tracks

Few rappers have had a more divisive career than Nas. Other than his instantly canonized 1994 debut, “Illmatic,” each of his ensuing eight efforts has either been regarded as a startling return to form, or yet another failure to reach his precocious zenith.* But even those who haven’t cared since Clinton’s first term must have been intrigued by the news of "Distant Relative," his collaboration with Damian “Junior Gong" Marley, slated for an early June release. Recorded at an undisclosed Los Angeles studio over the last several months, the duo will finally unveil stripped-down versions of the new songs Friday at 8 p.m. at L.A. Live’s Grammy Museum.
The performance will be accompanied by a Q&A, where the pair will answer questions about their new album and discuss their humanitarian work. Earlier this year, Nas told MTV News, “We tryin' to build some schools in Africa… and trying to build empowerment. The record's all about the 'hood and Africa.” While an official label announcement has yet to be made, most media speculation has pointed toward the release of "Distant Relative" coming from Island Def Jam, the label for which Nas currently records (Marley is signed to Universal).
Nas and Marley have worked together before, on “Road to Zion,” the second single from Marley’s breakthrough third album, the Grammy Award-winning “Welcome to Jamrock.” Though the pairing of the metaphysical Queensbridge rapper and the offspring of Jamaican music royalty seems odd on paper, the pair share an avowed ardor for both illicit herbal substances and progressive politics. Last year, Nas’ “Untitled” featured searing sermons aimed at the U.S. government and the nation’s racial inequalities. Like his father, Bob, Marley’s oeuvre has drawn heavily upon the bleak poverty of the Trenchtown ghettos.
While his father made his name in the more traditional roots reggae, the youngest singing Marley (elder siblings Ziggy, Julian, Stephen and Ky-Mani also sing professionally), has carved out a niche with his “toasting” style, a strain of reggae that borrows heavily from both dancehall and hip-hop. Accordingly, some of Marley’s finest work has come in collaboration with rappers, including guest appearances on albums from B-Real, Redman and Method Man, and Snoop Dogg.
Tickets are available at $19.95 via Ticketmaster, but only 200 are available. Considering that Nas’ last album debuted at No. 1, and Marley’s previous effort went gold, the wise money says: Start scouring Stub Hub and Craigslist now.

*Except for “Street’s Disciple” and “Nastradamus” — only the most staunch Nas apologists refuse to repudiate those disappointing albums.

Hip-Hop star Nas has revealed details about an upcoming CD with Damian “Jr Gong” Marley that is titled Distant Relatives.
The pair first met in 1996, but realized their chemistry in the recording studio, after they recorded “Road to Zion,” a track from Marley’s album Welcome to Jamrock.
The album was released in 2005 and earned a Grammy for Marley.
The title Distant Relatives refers to Nas and Marley’s chemistry, but also pays homage to their African Ancestry.
“As an American, we have so much even in a so-called recession that a neighborhood like Queensbridge or Red Hook is Beverly Hills compared to the way people are living in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Ghana,” Nas told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “So obviously if we making records with that theme, there’s gonna be things I want to build on. I think Africa has a lot to teach us.”
In addition to the new album of material, Nas and Marley will launch a multi-continent concert tour to showcase the new material.
“Africa is the backbone of the world and the foundation of everything and Africans are in a situation where they need help more than anywhere else,” Damian Marley added. “We know there are dire situations here in America but when you look at America—with public libraries and free education—these are not opportunities most Africans have. It’s a completely different scale of trying to help people. As humans beings, we’re part of a human family.”
The combination could also result in commercial success, as Welcome to Jamrock earned a Grammy for Best Reggae album.
Nas, who has sold over 20 million records in his career has released 8 solo albums and 3 compilation albums and earned 11 Grammy nods.
Distant Relatives is due in stores in late June 2009.

This is true.road to zion was my favorite song when it dropped.if anyone could pull off a best of both worlds album it would be these two.I'm kind of expecting a great album so I hope I'm not setting myself up for disappointment.
