Crooked I recently discussed the lack of West Coast support from rap veterans Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre claiming established artists are not making way for new emcees.
Originally inspired to make a No Country For Old Men project targeting the rappers, Crooked claims his recent near-death experience has altered his plan.
"You've got all these people on the West Coast," he explained. "The 'Men' stands for 'mentality': No country for this old mentality. We don't want to deal with this mentality that says we can't like each other, we can't unify...After this stuff, man, I've been really thinking. That [album is] cool. That's something that needs to be said. But right now ... I've been in these [life-threatening] situations before...My focus now is if Ice Cube, Snoop, Dre, none of them dudes wanna reach down and help the new dudes, that's fine. Maybe I'll call them and have a healthy conversation about it and move on. I'm not in that zone no more. I want to leave a body of work behind that matches a Biggie or Pac." (MTV)
Despite his calling for peace, the rapper challenged incarcerated Mobb Deep member Prodigy to a physical fight after reading an alleged letter questioning his lyrical skills.
"I read your letter and you disrespectfully mentioned my name," Crooked wrote in a blog entry. "If you don't know why Vibe magazine chose to put me in the Best Rapper Alive issue maybe you should have researched me before you wrote what you wrote. Since you have time on your hands, you should check out week 1 thru 52 of my historical Hip Hop Weekly series. Week 33 was a freestyle over your song 'Get Away' (one of my favorite Mobb Deep songs). All things considered, there is a price for speaking on a real n*gga sideways...Fight me 1 on 1. Nobody else, just you and me. I'll wait for your release date since I don't forget about sh*t. P.S. Cooked recently made headlines after rumors spread about him being fatally shot in early March.
"Mentally, I'm kinda in a f*cked up place right now but physically I'm good," Crooked said in an interview. "I just wanna let people know I'm good, man...Some crazy sh*t just went on man and I was at the wrong place at the wrong time type of sh*t, you know what I'm saying. Right now, I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it, man...When sh*t like that happens, it's better to just leave it where it happened...I don't want to give nobody fame from bringing negativity towards me...God is good and these haters are gonna find that out." He was, at one time, signed to Death Row Records.
Departed from Death Row by early 2004, Crooked went independent, launching his Dynasty Entertainment label, but legal obstacles prevented him from releasing yet another title of his own. Mixtapes, DVDs, and features continued to pile up, with B.O.S.S. (Beginning of Something Serious) -- at long last, his first official album -- prepared for a 2008 release date. (All Music)

Seriously.....Anyone feeling sorry for Crooked I is either a punk of some kind or just does not understand life.....Life is about choices and years ago, Crooked chose Death Row and repped the Row to the fullest...Sorry Dude but bad choice and some choices stay with you forever whether that is fair or not. Please don't anyone tell me anymore what Dre and Snoop don't do for the up and coming west coast rappers...Check the history and shut the fuck up..Both have already done enough and have earned the chance to enjoy their careers as they choose. I especially don't understand the Dre issue. He said recently that he didn't want to wait around for the Detox situation to unfold and that he was gonna keep moving. He said Dre offered him a record deal in the past. It sounds like Dre has reached out but Crooked wasn't accepting of the terms. I'd love to see Crooked I fucking with Dre like anyone would but he was offered Aftermath and chose Death Row. He seemed to have a brief "in" on the Detox project but felt it wasn't a priority. He chose to go a different path. He can't fault Dre, anymore than Dre could fault him. There's people in the industry who would practically give up breathing to get a chance to be featured on Detox.
The only situation I could kind of understand would be the Snoop one. Seemed like Snoop did kind of hate on him a little bit with the Dubcnn interview a while back but what can you do?

Dre might be a little slow in the studio with some but in the last ten years, he's put out three of the biggest acts in music through his label. The music industry respects the hell out of the label. It's people on message boards who think they're the "music industry" who think it's a joke.

Yeah, Jimmy Iovine is the one who decides what gets released on Aftermath/Interscope and he rejected most of the artists that was on Aftermath.

No, you're right. I have a lot of respect for the old and new south for doing there thing and not waiting for handouts.
I just think that in the state of the music industry, labels aren't as willing to give out record deals anymore, so it's hard for people that aren't making the popular music to do anything.

No what happened was Dre and Crooked had discussed working together. Dre told Crooked he wanted to work with him but he had to wait till he finished working on Snoop's album and Xzibit's album. Crooked I was impatient so he took a deal with Death Row so his album could be released quickly (LMAO). Obviously Dre wasn't going to work with him while he was signed to Suge so there that goes. Crooked blew a chance of a lifetime. And after reading a recent interview where he said they called him to work on "Detox" but he's not sure if he's going to cuz he doesn't want to spend all that time waiting around and possibly not even end up on the album - he might be blowing it again.

A. Rakim writes most of his lyrics at home while Aftermath creates in studio (long hours, random times)
B. Rakim wanted to stay true to himself while Aftermath (Doc Dre) wanted to market him differently
