Dubcnn received an exclusive opportunity to interview Team Dime/RBC Records artist Tha Realest. He discusses his recently released debut album, "Witness Tha Realest" which was delayed for almost a decade, the pitfalls in the industry and addresses the haters.

witness tha realest is probably my favorite summer album and still is in my top 10 albums of 09 so far. still jammin this album because of the mad replay value.

Not really a fan, whole controversy, you know my stance if you see my post in Realest threads.I'm actually thinking about making my own indepth review for it. Cause from what I get the beats are bangin, and they love the tracks but i've yet to see a very in depth review. I got to give props for the realest of not going out like top dogg or Hittman and just disappearing.

Good interview as I said before, but in light of recent things...
I got a few questions for Realest if and when the 2nd interview comes around. How did Realest take to Suge calling him "The Fakest" after he visited Suge in jail after getting shot? For those who don't know, Suge didn't respect Realest after he got shot in the foot and made a big deal about it. After he visited him in jail, Suge called Tha Realest - Tha Fakest. Second, when Realest bailed from the award show in which he tucked his chain and changed his shirt to a non-Death Row shirt then rode home with a few girls he didn't know. Did he hook up with them or was he just that afraid of being black balled that he just asked them to drop him off at his condo? Also, I am waiting on that remix myself. Nothing against his music, just his choices.

Well, basically - Tha Realest gets shot outside a recording studio where The Dogg Pound were recording at. He gets shot in the foot. He makes a big deal out of it and even talks about in songs, but he showed up on crutches with this tiny ass bullet wound making a big deal out of it. That's why Suge doesn't respect him and calls him that. It's because he's a fake.

One time, he was on tour in Texas and he got his ass kicked for his whole 2Pac charade. So, I am not sure Texas really wants to acknowledge him as legit. I'm not sure what set, but I am 80% positive he claimed some sort of California Blood set during his time on Death Row.

Well, Realest came out to the coast when he came on Death Row. So, that's where he primarily started repping. Naturally, because of the whole 2Pac shit and 2Pac started trying to bang towards the end of his life - so I guess it inspired Tha Realest. Realest got shot in 99 I think after Streetz Iz A Mutha dropped. They were outside the recording studio, if I remember what I was told, and some dudes affiliated with DMX rolled up and sprayed at The Pound, some other dude who got killed, and Realest. They were gunning for Kurupt because of Callin' Out Names. After Tha Realest visited Suge after the incident, Suge didn't respect him. He officially got the fuck out of dodge in 01 or 02 (I believe) when the award show thing happened. It was the incident where DR dudes ran up on The Pound. He got out of that, because he didn't want to do it or just didn't want to get the bad reputation. Also, yeah Dollaz - it sold about 1,000 or so the first week if I remember correctly.

I think niggaz like Realest, Top dogg, that 1 bitch who replaced rage, Gurrilla black, and even game to a extremly small extend. Get play cause they remind niggaz of a Safe zone or something. Anyways, Realest was signed in 1997 (under a different name) he didn't change his name until a little later. :/ I posted it awhile ago, that he based his original Alias off a old Historical figure (like 2pac) and later changed his name to The Realest.
Anyways, 2PAC claimed MOB cause he started hanging out with Suge Knight (which is why he started wearing red, and less blue, were in the pass he alternated cause he didn't bang).
The Realest is said to be a blood, but I doubt it. He just jumped on to the MOB thing cause of 2pac and Suge Knight. Either way The nigga is just going to fade out when he dies, regardless of the countless debate, you know all he'll be remember for is his wannabe 2pac shit.

Suge wasn't in control of the label at that point. I mean, he had final say so but Reggie and Michel'le were in control. Reggie and Realest are still cool with each other. It benefited Suge as well to keep him on, because it made him money being a 2Pac biter and all, plus he just stopped fucking with Tha Row after that because his contract didn't expire until a few years later. Suge wasn't in control of the label at that point. I mean, he had final say so but Reggie and Michel'le were in control. Reggie and Realest are still cool with each other. It benefited Suge as well to keep him on, because it made him money being a 2Pac biter and all, plus he just stopped fucking with Tha Row after that because his contract didn't expire until a few years later. If Suge doesn't like your antics or your attitude towards things, he's going to keep you there for a good while in artist purgatory. He tried doing it to Crooked I for when he spoke to Irv behind Suge's back.
He did it to K9 as well when he was no longer affiliated with Death Row - his contract didn't expire until 2006, so he technically stayed on until then. That makes sense so that's why the whole Crooked I situation turned out so sour. I remember the first Crooked I interviews post-Death Row, everyone kept asking him what happened with the whole situation at Death Row. he said he recorded the album it was all set and ready to go and for some reason suge didnt want to release it so he pulled the album last minute before they pressed it (they had that official release date and it was in sept 2001 i believe). Then he said, Suge wanted him to re-record the album so he said he re-recorded it multiple times and "hoodstar" was supposed to be the new single. Now we've heard tracks from the album that have leaked and it seems like it would have been a straight classic. What happened with Irv Gotti that would make Suge say he is going to blackball his own artist who would have been the big solo artist drop around the time people started talking about the row again and they were on The Source magazine plus all the promo that was going on Jimmy Kimmel, radio interviews, etc. He had billboards he paid for with promos and the three track promo series, all the tracks sounded great. I know Crook featured on Ashani's "Baby" remix and video and him and east did some tracks with Murder Inc. but why would Suge blackball his leading artist? Plus him and Irv were friends it seemed. Seems like you're right on with that but wasn't there more to the story then just Irv Gotti? I remember how disgusted he sounded in those interviews after he announced he was off the label. From a business standpoint, wouldn't Suge have benefitted by releasing the material and reaping the benfits?

yeah, that's true. I heard he's networked in with mike bibby and gavin and joey maloof who own the palms casino in vegas, sacaramento kings, liquor licensing rights in new mexico, and mainly, they own big stakes in universal -- if he had that kind of pull he could have Universal who has ties to most major labels including Interscope and movie contracts put a blackball on an artist. That's big stuff right there.
From listening to the album, some of the old tracks like "mind of a madman," "grown ass man," and "witness tha realest" which were around since 2004 that they threw on there he sounds like his old Cali-self on there. Then, on the newer tracks like "Get It N" and many of the others he's talking about trips to Florida a lot and repping Texas to the fullest. So it seems like he used to rep Cali as his primary soil, and now he is kinda repping Cali but now mostly Texas and he switched his flow on some of those newer tracks. Is he not repping Cali as much as he used to?
Some questions I always wondered about:
Is Wideawake going to release Tha Realest music such as some of his albums and is he going to be on that Christmas Box Set?
Was the album title "Witness Tha Realest" inspired by the album title "All Eyez On Me" (i.e. witness = all eyez) (tha realest = me) ?
Also, who was officially in 'The Last Circle', was that Vk, Swoop G, Queen, Doobie, Top Dogg, and Twist?
And were the Terror Twinz from texas or los angeles?
Was Tha Realest and Young Doobie roommates in the Chronic 2000 days?
Is using the Tenkemenin alias he started with on his next album to get away from the comparisons to pac and he's probably going to use his newer 'Texas sounding' flow?

I agree. Suge put him in artist purgatory and led him to think his album would eventually see the light of day and I remember in interviews him saying he stayed up til 4 am on the sutdio many nights when everyone else left. Suge was probably thinking in the back of his mind he would hoard all this material and he would only release a few tracks on compilations, meanwhile his energy would be exhausted from all the hard work and no payout or albums released. I think he deserves to have the album out with that logo on the front for all the hard work he did and maybe send Suge a few copies.
Also, nobody has the real official Say Hi To Tha Bad Guy. There are songs like "Middle Finger Music" where he disses Snoop that were supposed to be on there and he recorded with Jadakiss too. We've seen the songs leak from Ja Rule, Too Short, Kurupt, Eastwood, and Juvenile, but there were others. Suge was also known to make tracklist changes at the last minute before they sent the album out for pressing, so only Crook and Suge really have an idea of what the final product was supposed to look like. I doubt some of those tracks like "So Damn Hood" with Crook singing the hook or "Hoodstar" was supposed to be on there (he recorded "hoodstar" for the 'second' release).
